Video: James Irvin Says Anderson Silva's Clinch Isn't Technical

He actually said the same thing on MMA Nation, but the station hasn't started podcasting the show, so I suppose ESPN gets the scoop. Oh well.

[UPDATE] by Nick Thomas - James Irvin w/Cofield & Cokin on ESPNRadio1100:

I like Irvin, but this is starting to remind me of the shitzu that keeps nipping at the pitbulls legs.

Silva can’t punch and his clinch isnt technical. I wonder what else he sucks at.

Irvin has trained in Thailand and might have some technical knowledge we are not familiar with. I dont think it was the first time he has had that thought about Anderson and probably had a reason for saying it.

all you gotta do is...

I’m wondering if Irvin is getting ‘technical’ and ‘effective’ mixed up in his own head.

I know Luke pointed out the differences on Irvin’s take on Silva’s punching…Silva may not hit like a Mac truck, but by the same token, he probably doesn’t have to. His punching is effective (and technical). Silva’s clinch may not be technical, but ask anyone that’s been in it recently if its effective, provided they can remember the experience. ;).

I hope for Irivn’s sake he’s not blowing Silva off in his own head because of what he sees as weakness in Silva’s game. So far, it seems, Irvin is making semantic arguments that don’t really apply to Silva’s game as Silva would use it.

‘Oh, his clinch sucks and he has pillows for hands,’ yet he hasn’t been beaten in four years, if you exclude the DQ loss to Okami as a non-combat loss. Silva also hasn’t been knocked out, or even hurt through strikes (that I’m aware of), so Irvin’s putting a lot (verbally) on his ability to knock people out…he better have a plan ‘B’ if that falls through.

I gotta figure Irvin is telling the truth about Silva’s clinch. He’s done a lot of training Thailand

and he obviously knows a lot. I like Irvin, and he’s saying all the right things, but I’m questioning whether he’s just brushing off Silva. I hope he wins, and I’ll be rooting for him.
