BloodyElbow.com Exclusive: Josh Barnett Says "You Get What You Pay for" With Affliction PPV vs. Free UFC Event on July 19th

This is from my new radio show on 106.7 WJFK called MMA Nation.

Josh and I talked about the WAMMA belt, Affliction's weak advertising efforts, Affliction vs. UFC, Rampage Jackson, Dana White's responsibility to MMA and his fight with Hidehiko Yoshida. I am a complete moron for forgetting Barnett left AMC Pankration for Erik Paulson's CSW, so please forgive me. I feel so stupid, but the interview is too important not to post. Hope you enjoy it.

Great Interview

I respect Josh Barnett and his opinion, but I don’t think what Dana White and the UFC are doing exhibits that they don’t care about MMA. Of course, Dana cares about MMA, he’s dependent on the sport being relevant to the sporting public. It doesn’t do the sport any good for a competitor to be allowed to limp into the industry. Top to bottom, Affliction’s card has the better fighters, but their marketing is seriously lacking. That left the opening for the UFC to come in and steal what thunder they may have been able to muster. What do you think the NFL would do if Donald Trump tried to revive the USFL? I’ll bet they wouldn’t hesitate in going head to head.

If Affliction is serious, they’ll have to beat the UFC at its own game. That means they’ll have to be organized on all fronts. They can sign every top heavyweight in the world, but if a significant portion of potential fans don’t know about how good their lineup is, the promotion will not survive.

Hell, we’ve had this discussion over and over. I guess we’ll see exactly how good Affliction’s first event will do soon enough.

You get what you pay for, eh? 40 bucks for one great fight and a bunch of dubious matchups with some big names.

Brilliant homeboy, although the Savant Young/Hominick fight is as great as the main event.

Let’s play “shuffle” and make a card immensely better with exactly the same names:
-Fedor Emelianenko vs. Tim Sylvia
-Josh Barnett vs. Andre Arlovski
-Renato Sobral vs. Rogerio Nogueira
-Matt Lindland vs. Vitor Belfort
-Pedro Rizzo vs. Paul Buentello
-Aleksander Emelianenko vs. Ben Rothwell
-Terry Martin vs. Edwin Dewees
-Savant Young vs. Mark Hominick

Now THAT is a card worth $55.

nice

ooh now you’re talking!

If that was the card they were putting on, I’d be ordering it.

Funny how both Josh and Lindland are so bitter at the UFC, after they failed to get contracts recently. And why would the UFC have NIKE? Does NIKE make MMA gear? No, TAPOUT does.

Good interview Luke…I hope Josh does well but if the UFC is so bad I’m not sure why he was saying that he wanted to come back and be the UFC HW champion last year. He made it pretty clear he “could and would” beat Randy.

Josh would still crush Randy, he’s the only person I think can do it in 2007. I say 2007 because Randy in 08 is a wildcard with his age and ring rust.

Great interview with Josh. He’s very well versed on the business side of MMA and Affliction.
