"UFC 85: Bedlam" LIVE Results, Updates & Discussion

L_24d1e5bd4280be701830938ab3fbe18f_medium

I'll be at Velocity 5 in Falls Church, VA today pulling the biggest loser move in the world as your's truly live blogs the "UFC 85: Bedlam" from a bar. Local 106.7 WJFK midday talkers Big O & Dukes are hosting a UFC viewing party here, so I'll be crashing it. Please feel fee to tell me how awful I am if you see me in person.

WARNING. Sherdog will begin posting the live results of the undercard around 1 p.m. EST. I'll link their results page, but I won't post anything on the front page.

HOWEVER, discussion of the undercard and main card will be going on in the comments section, so be prepapred: SPOILERS AHEAD.

Don't forget: there's still time to prep for the fights if you've been living under a rock the last few weeks. BloodyElbow.com's staff listed their predictions for the event, there's footage of the weigh-ins, a discussion of the history of Thiago Alves' weight problems, a gambler's breakdown of the event, coverage of the press conference and much more.

Enjoy the show.

OPENING THOUGHTS: Alves' weight issues addressed up front, which is exactly how it should be done. Then again, Rogan qualifying why Alves didn't make weight isn't exactly how I would cover it.

Apparently the show is sold out.

I still think they're building Day up to be something he isn't, but then again, my picks are awful this time out, so what do I know?

Anyone get the feeling Marquardt is going to crush Leites?

Swick vs. Davis looks like it's going to be a barn burner.

FABRICIO WERDUM vs. BRANDON VERA

Round 1: Fights start the fight by working the clinch in the middle and against the fence. Werdum gets inside trip to takedown, but Vera recovers guard. Vera pushes off and gets back to his feet. Wedum misses sloppy takedown attempt.  Vera lands right cross and left elbow over the top. Werdum lands another inside trip and a big punch on top. Werdum passes to mount and lands strikes until referee Miragliotta stops the fight.

Werdum wins by TKO 4:40 of the very first round.

Vera claims he was "ok" and that "I wasn't going to quit. Are you fucking kidding me?"

NATE MARQUARDT vs. THALES LEITES

Round 1: Both fighters exchanging at long range to start.  Leites rocks Marquardt with a big right. and gets mount. Leites now working from half guard. Nate escapes from side control and the fighters return to the feet.  Nate lands heavy body shot. Nate lands heavy right of his own and rocks Leites.

BE scores the round 10 - 9 Leites, however, it's extremely close.

Round 2: Nate comes out with body - head combinations and the fighters clinch.  Nate lands other shot and a takedown. Nate lands vicious and illegal knee to the face and Leites is clearly rocked.  Referee Herb Dean takes away a point from Nate.  Nate immediately takes Leites down.  Nate is unleashing absolutely vicious ground and pound. Leites is bleeding badly and is continuing the assault. Herb Dean stands them up after a brief stalemate. Nate misses a takedown and Leites gets mount. Nate recovers to half guard.

BE scores the round 9 - 9.

Round 3: Nate lands another body shot and takes Leites down. Leites attempts a triangle and Nate defends. Dean stands the fighters up and deducts another point from Nate for shots to the back of the head. Nate lands a knee tap takedown into his own corner. Nate lands a pile driver to finish the round.

BE scores the round 9 - 9.

Due to the point deductions, BE scores the fight 28 - 27 Leites.

The winner by split decision is Thales Leites (two times 28 - 27 for Leities, one 28 - 27 for Nate)

MARCUS DAVIS vs. MIKE SWICK

Round 1: Davis lands a right and inside leg kicks. Davis lands a takedown but in the scramble gets reversed. Swick working to pass on top. Davis working butterfly guard. Davis trying to stand, but Swick sucks his hips out from under him.  Swick not doing damage but staying active on top.  Davis attempts a sweep to his left, but Swick drops his left hip to defend.

BE scores the very uneventful round 10 - 9 for Swick.

Round 2: Davis lands a hard punch, but Swick stuff a clinch attempt to land on top again. Swick works from full guard. Swick passes to side control, but Davis recovers half guard.  Davis attempts kimura and uses it to get the fight to the feet. Both fighters working against the fence. Davis lands a takedown from an outside trip.  Swick lands a takedown and into side control from a failed body kick attempt.

BE scores the round 10 - 9 for Swick.

Round 3: Swick lands brutal knee for Davis over committing.  Fights clinch against the fence and in the middle, but nothing much is happening. Davis lands a takedown and Swick is immediately back to his feet. Referee Yamasaki deducts a point from Swick for holding the fence, but Swick immediately lands another takedown. Davis is covered in blood. Swick finishes on top.

BE scores the fight 29 - 27 for Swick. The judges agree.

MICHAEL BISPING vs. JASON DAY

Round 1: Day starts the round by landing leg kicks. Bisping lands nice outside leg trip and unleashes nasty GNP.  Bisping absolutely clowns Day with brutal positioning, vicious punching, aggression and more. Day had nowhere to hide.

Referee Dan Miragliotta stops the fight at 3:42 of the very first round. Incredible performance by Bisping.

MATT HUGHES vs. THIAGO ALVES

Round 1: Thiago stuff early takedowns, but eventually Hughes pulls guard. Alves lands nice punch but fight starts on feet again. Hughes lands takedown off kick attempt and works from half guard on top, but can't do a whole lot. Fight starts on feet again and Thiago stuffs takedown and lands more punches from on top.

BE scores round 10 - 9 Alves.

Round 2: Hughes attempts a takedown and Alves lands a perfectly timed flying knee. Upon replay, it's clear Alves' knee DID NOT land and the problem was Hughes buckling his left knee.

Alves win by TKO referee stoppage at 1:02 of round two.

If you guys watch the fights with some casual fans you can always have some good laughs if you happen to have the fight spoiled, by placing some small friendly bets!

It happened to me when Penn fought Joe Daddy! I was so pissed, but still made the best of it by placing a bet with my brother! he still doesn’t know and got stuck taking out the garbage for a month! Mwahaha

all you gotta do is...

Apparently

Taylor took a relatively controversial decision.

Submits Carneiro. Anyone see that coming?

i got a nice big 0h-for so far….. brutal….. my pick rate has been about 65% over the past year but i am just taking a bath on this card

This is ugly. I’ve already gotten three of six wrong.

Thought never even crossed my mind. I really thought Tavares was much better than Wiman at everything except wrestling. Did not expect a KO after the shots that Tavares was able to eat in the Tyson Griffin fight. Dammit.

That punch was right “on the button”.

Could someone please sit Joe and Goldy down and politely explain to them that it is vital that they come up with some other things to say during the fights than “on the button” and “over the top”. Please.

Alright people

Let’s start blogging and commenting. If you’re at Velocity 5, I’m in the corner by the entrance.

I can only imagine the type of looks you are getting sitting in a bar typing away on your laptop. If anyone comes over and asks what you’re doing tell them you’re chattin with babes on Match.com. That should get some interesting reactions.

Bad stop

Nice win anyway
Nice the hear the Chute-Boxe yells again: eeeeeeeeh
Rudmar Fedrigo is telling Werdum: don´t mind the boos

So the bad stoppage by Miragliotta is becoming a pattern…

I can’t hear anything on my stream. But um.
Vera, why won’t you move down? Why?

by Gong on Jun 7, 2008 3:26 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe losing a few at HW will convince him.

by Richard Wade on Jun 7, 2008 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

He’s already getting bullied around by guys bigger and better than Mir, how many more losses does he want? It’s just frustrating.

by Gong on Jun 7, 2008 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I know I'm being a harsh

Really though, It’s all fine and well if he has no intention of getting a title shot. But his losses so far are to the few remaining quality heavies in the UFC. I just don’t see him going anywhere at this rate (at this weight).

by Gong on Jun 7, 2008 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Great Fight

Thales made me a fan today.
Nate should get DQ for that knee, Thales was out he didn´t even know where to go.
It shouldn´t be a split decision. What crazy judge give thales 27 when he did won the first round?

by bigcherry on Jun 7, 2008 4:00 PM EDT reply actions

Really? I actually think the decision was bad. I think Nate won all three rounds, and round-two should have been 9-8. Thales landed one big punch in the first round, and that’s it. I can’t wait to see the Fightmetric on this one.

How many times...

...Do I have to tell you guys about Lambert’s horrible technique? He breaks damn near every rule in the striking book. Coming forward punching at air and not protecting his chin. Look for How Not To Punch by Jason Lambert part 2 coming soon.

My gambling account is taking a beating on controversial crap...

...Carano getting to be 5-10 lbs bigger than Young at fight time because she didn’t bother making weight.

...Kimbo getting a gift stoppage win.

...What sounds like a bad decision in the Jess/Paul fight.

Good Lord...

People are overlooking Bisping because of 2 fights. But Bisping at 185 is a beast. I’m not even joking…he is a completely new fighter and his striking has come so far from where it was even as recently as the Evans fight.

i’d love to see bisping vs almeida for a title shot….. bisping’s sub defense has looked not so brilliant in his fights with sinosic and mccarthy (sure mccarthy has a black belt but i think his jj for mma is wanting).... i think almeida would be a tough test

I just hope Thiago can make weight from now on, he really looks huge for this weight class.
Great victory for the Pitbull.

PileDrivers Are Illegal

I’m surprised Bloody Elbow didn’t point out that spiking the head of your opponent into the mat is a blatent foul and completely disregards the safety of your opponent. Not only did he not apologize for the illegal knee, but then he ends the fight with a move the if landed right will crack your opponents neck. Wow what a guy.

by Tommy7 on Jun 7, 2008 6:57 PM EDT reply actions

For such a quiet, respectful, religious guy, he sure does some questionable things in the fights, lol.

That elbow was legal, and he shouldn’t have had a point deducted, but like they said, it is hard to get those right in the heat of the moment.

As for the knee, it was close, but the correct call. Leites had one knee down, brought it up and then back down almost immediately, which happened to be the same time Nate was striking.

"They said you was hung!!"

"And they was RIGHT!"

by BJJDenver on Jun 7, 2008 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Not only that ...

Not only did he land the illegal head-spike, he followed that up with another knee to the jaw while Leites was getting up.

by asa on Jun 9, 2008 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions

My all important thoughts...

Wow, UFC must be really protecting Werdum, because using much of the logic from this weeks internet posts, that was a far worse stoppage than anything in EXC’s card. Seriously, that stoppage was ridiculous and all the bad reffing the last few shows, is really disappointing. I’m all for protecting the fighters, but this was ridiculous.

I need to see Maquardt/Leites 2 and much sooner than later!!

I will admit that I don’t care much for Hughes, though I do respect him as a fighter and very hard worker. I did lose some respect for Alves, but I won’t condemn him considering it was somewhat short notice. I do think he has to show he can make 170 properly, before getting a shot. That said, I think Hughes’ days as a contender are over. Remember a few years ago, when he was man handling the division, slamming guys all over the cage? like him or not, he was Quick, strong and had a very good explosion. I haven’t seen that in a while, and I think he is just one of those guys that got old quick. The new generation of fighters seems to be taking over and every time I see him fight, he looks smaller, weaker and slower than his competition. There are a few good matches for him that I wouldn’t mind seeing, Serra the most, but even though I don’t care for him, I don’t want to see a once dominant fighter, hanging around at a much lower performance level.

"They said you was hung!!"

"And they was RIGHT!"

by BJJDenver on Jun 7, 2008 7:02 PM EDT reply actions

A fight for hughes after Serra...

Perhaps they could do a rubber match between Hughes and BJ Penn? It’s unlikely, but it would be fun. It would also let BJ fight at 170 at least once before he goes after GSP (I’ve never been one for people moving weight class and going straight into a title shot)

by -Sam on Jun 7, 2008 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

It sounds like

He’s going to give Serra everything he has. I don’t know, that’s a competitive fight.

by Luke Thomas on Jun 7, 2008 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I am greatly looking forward to the Serra fight, and it will be good to see how Hughes does with a full training camp, but I’m for Serra.

BJ would be interesting, but I would say he smokes Matt Hughes version 2008.

I could see Hughes fighting Serra and retiring if he wins, or if he loses, get an easy farewell fight after Serra.

Of course in 12-18 months he returns to the UFC and makes some money!

by BJJDenver on Jun 7, 2008 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I tell you what

I’ve never enjoyed his personal politics, but it will be a sad day when Matt Hughes leaves MMA.

by Luke Thomas on Jun 7, 2008 8:36 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed...

He rubs me wrong in a lot of ways, but dedication, hard work, effort and fighting accomplishments aren’t any of them.

You know, I liked him before he got to much camera time and showed his non-fighter personality, and I found myself kind of feeling sorry for him today. I’m sure he isn’t the worst person in the world and it is always kind of sad to see someone who was at the top, start to slip down.

"They said you was hung!!"

"And they was RIGHT!"

by BJJDenver on Jun 7, 2008 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I hate to admit it, but that watching Hughes lose to Alves really made me sad. And for me to feel sorry for Hughes is no small feat. I was going for Alves up until the fight started, but the fact that he didn’t even come close to making weight and how much bigger than Hughes he was just really rubbed me the wrong way. It almost seemed unfair. Multiply this all by 10 because of the fact that Alves is a known cheater, and it just left me unhappy to see him get the W.

by TheFightJournal on Jun 7, 2008 9:23 PM EDT reply actions

Never trust a banker.

Hughes needs to retire to mudbawging and beating up his brother on the farm. He hasn’t done enough to expand his skillset as the sport evolves. He’s outdated and boring. And he’s an asshole. Purely for laughs, I recommend reading his book, which sports the shockingly creative redneck title “Made in America.” If you thought Hughes looked bad on TUF, look at how he portrays himself in his own words. He’s a terrible terrible human being.

by mosesloaf on Jun 8, 2008 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Anyone else happy with the mic in the cage…seems like a first for the UFC to have the mic amped right up so the shots really sounded awesome (with the stereo cranked) and I thought the cornerman audio was top notch. Maybe i’m dreaming but I don’t recall the UFC allowing as much in-cage audio, hopefully they continue this trend because it made a lot of the fights better.

by pr0cs on Jun 8, 2008 12:27 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed...100%

The sound was great. The punches were thudding…great audio.
