Shaw: If Slice and Rogers Want It, "We'll Make It Happen"

Feuding EliteXC heavyweights Kimbo Slice and Brett Rogers could meet as soon as October, promoter Gary Shaw told Sherdog's Loretta Hunt. Though the proposed fight still seems to be in what could generously be described as the "planning" phase -- Shaw didn't say if the card would air on CBS, Showtime or PPV, and a venue hasn't been announced -- the EliteXC Live Events President sounded certain that the fight would occur:

"Kimbo says he wants Rogers. Rogers says he wants Kimbo. If that's what they want, we'll make it happen," said Shaw.

No kidding  - why wouldn't Shaw make that match ASAP? It's a no lose for his brand regardless of the outcome. If Kimbo were to win, it would be considered his first truly legit victory over an even semi-legit opponent; but Kimbomania may have peaked just before the CBS debut - the aura of invincibility is gone along with a whole bunch of cred for being outclassed by James Thompson (think about that) in those first two rounds. Rogers, on the other hand, dispatched of Thompson in Kimbo-esque fashion and had the nards to call Slice out on his "garbage" performance at the presser. And if the pre-fight hype and video packages alone aren't enough to make Rogers a mainstream name, being the guy hand Kimbo his first MMA loss would do the trick.

In completely unrelated ProElite news, 5oz. says the June 27th ShoXC event is off. The card would have seen the promotional debuts of both Cyrille Diabate and Hector Lombard.

I agree, it’s a win-win situation for Shaw and EliteXC. You’re totally right in that Kimbomania hit it’s peak last weekend. If Rogers can destroy Kimbo, then he’ll instantly boost his status. Kimbo is on his way out anyway, unless he can truly score some big wins, starting with Rogers. If that’s the case, and if he wins, perhaps Kimbomania will come back again.
