I don’t normally care for Rome much as a personality, but I’ll still tune into his program semi-regularly. Today I tried to catch as much ESPN to get everyone’s take on MMA. Rome really went up a tick in my book. He sounded pretty informed and I’m fairly confident that he will give MMA more (and positive) coverage going forward. Mike Golic (of Mike & Mike in the morning) sounded considerably less educated about MMA, but still intimated how he enjoys watching it and had some commentary regarding the EXC show. I do wish that someone would have mentioned WEC throughout the day, seeing how the EXC program was widely considered something of a critical failure.
I also very much expected Skip Bayless to go on a tirade about “the brutality of MMA”, but he didn’t make any negative comments (though he admitted to watching women’s softball instead of EXC). I think that ESPN may have encouraged their journalists (if you can call some of them that) to be open about MMA going forward. All in all, a good day of sports media coverage for our sport (which may be the best thing to come of the EXC program).
Skip said he forgot the CBS event was on, and he said earlier on the show that he’s a huge women’s softball fan. I’m interested to see this week’s MMA Live show.
I only caught the tail end of it and Jemele Hill (sp?) seemed to be extremely uninformed about MMA. She said something like: In MMA they are just trying to knock each others heads off, in boxing there’s strategy….Rome jumped in and let her know that there was definitely significant strategy going on in MMA. To Jemele’s credit, if Sat. night was her first experience, i can see why she may have come up with that assumption.
spot on....
Especially his line about it having “an XFL feel” to it….

Yes!
OMG, I’m in the Denver airport LMAO! Rome is awesome. I’ve been a fan of his since 1997, but now so more than ever.
Burned about MMA again
He talked about Dan Miragliotta’s early stoppage on his show today. I’m glad he knows more about MMA than other people on ESPN.
