UFC 86 Countdown Times
On top of doing an underwhelming job hyping the upcoming Jackson/Griffin fight, the UFC and Spike TV have scheduled the "Countdown to UFC 86" show for the following times:
Monday, June 30th at midnight.
Wednesday, July 2nd at 9:00 am.
Thursday, July 3rd at 1:00 am.
Saturday, July 5th at 5:00 pm.
No word on whether this is part of a new marketing strategy to target insomniacs and the unemployed.

I can’t recall an act of squandered opportunity comparable to the UFC’s handling of Rampage.

Seriously.
After beating Chuck and with his personality, Rampage should’ve been one of the most prominent faces in the media. They really didn’t get him out there until the Ultimate Fighter and the promotion of the video game.

looking forward
I agree that UFC has done little to get me excited about this fight, but the ‘Countdown’ shows always seem to get me though. They’re not as good as HBO’s countdown / 24/7 shows, but they are still very well-produced.

Recently they have been, but previously they were awful.

Awful is a bit much. I mean, the countdown shows in 2006 for Tito/Ken, Hughes/Gracie, and Chuck/Tito were beyond fantastic. They had an amazing buy conversion, especially the latter.

I don’t recall any of those three to be honest, but perhaps awful was a bit too strong. Still, I stand by my assertion that they have improved recently.

Is it just me or have the countdown shows always been on late at night?
by Tonley on Jun 30, 2008 1:49 AM EDT 0 recs
Usually they get them on by 10, sometimes 11. Putting it on at midnight is real tough for working people, and 9 am is just retarded.

I am rarely in a position to be able to watch the mid-week Countdown shows “live” anyway, and I just dvr them. So for me, the middle of the night is actually pretty good timing because it doesn’t conflict with anything else I’m trying to dvr or watch at more “normal” hours.
The dvr is your friend …

The only thing I can imagine...
is that rather than go head to head with bigger network shows (most of which are in re-runs for the season) they put it on at awkward times that should have no competition figuring that people will Tivo it.
That is the only possible thing I can think of…

Well according to mmapayout…the arena is bout sold out…so…I dunno what that means for PPV.

This UFC 86 Countdown is on 1 hour later than the last 5-6 Countdown shows, for sure. Personally, I think that stinks, and I’m not sure why they are putting it on later than they have been.

Does Spike have new programming that is taking up their previous time slot or something?

Yeah, they definitely need to show these a few times during normal human hours the week before the fight.
