Quote of the Day: Kim Couture "I Walked Out There to Touch Gloves"
Well, I just walked out there to touch gloves and she just hit me. She wasn't interested in touching gloves and that first shot is what broke my jaw. My left hand wasn't even up to protect myself -- it was straight out to touch her glove. She took her shot, connected it and dropped me. That first shot is what broke it.
I don't think she did it on purpose or as a cheap shot, but maybe it was her nerves or her coaches saying that she had to get that first shot off. Or maybe she just completely forgot to touch gloves?

Or maybe it is your job to always protect yourself.
I don’t like the glove touching after the bell rings, for just this reason. You touched gloves at the middle with the ref, now go in fighting. That eliminates any chance for a cheap or unexpected strike.
"They said you was hung!!"
"And they was RIGHT!"
I like Kim Couture. She’s great for women’s MMA because of her looks and famous husband.
But before EVERY fight, referees ALWAYS state, ” PROTECT YOURSELF AT ALL TIMES.”
Wake-up sweetheart.

I think touching gloves to start each round is just fine – in fact, when I show new people the sport, it’s one of the things that they point out makes the fighters look more like athletes who love competition and less like assholes that are bar brawlers.
Also, I’ve seen quite a few times before a round, a fighter looks over to the other corner, raises his hand and basically asks with body language, “Wanna touch gloves?” If a fighter doesn’t respond to that gesture, then don’t touch gloves, protect yourself. If a fighter indicates that they’re willing to touch, I think it’s simply poor sportsmanship to take advantage and try to get a shot off. Not saying that that’s what happened here, but generally speaking.
I understand not liking it, but 99% of the time they touch gloves and it’s not an issue. I also don’t like the touching gloves in the middle of a round, but I don’t get the slippery slope argument here – these people are humans that are presumably capable of handling such a difficult task as “touch gloves before rounds, but not during.”
I agree with parts of that
especially the part about it making the sport look good but it also leads to the perception of cheap shots and the tendency of fights to just get silly with constant high fiving.
I agree, when they high five and shit it’s just annoying as all hell. My point is that the great majority of fights go down with a standard pre-round touch then they fight, with no antics during. Very few fighters ham it up as much as, say, Mayhem or Frank Shamrock, most of them don’t do it during rounds. I’m just saying it’s not an all or nothing thing. Touching gloves isn’t heroin; you can touch gloves at the beginning of a round and not fall into a headlong addiction of during-round glove-touchfests. I don’t really get calling to cut out regular respect showing, especially during a particularly grueling fight in which a fighter really respects his tough opponent, because a few dolts can’t stop trying to touch gloves after every time they drop their hands and get tagged.
I lost all respect for Gamburyan arter that fight. It’s one thing to not touch gloves, but to pretend like you’re going to and then throw a kick. That’s just cheap as hell! I agree with the dude that said glove touching’s done when the ref says.Is it really necessary to touch gloves with the ref, again after the fight starts and between everyround? It gets kind of gay after awhile.
I don’t understand the hate for her. You can hate all the attention thats being paid to her but thats not her fault and she is smart to take advantage of it. To have an injury like that early in a fight and go the distance is impressive.

I don’t see the point in saying you got hit unexpectedly. It sounds like an excuse even if it wasn’t meant that way. Comments like these also make it sound like you’re diminishing your opponent’s win, intent not withstanding.

Yeah...
It also doesn’t really look like she was trying to touch gloves.

yeah
It actually looks like she was trying to be slick, doing the “I’m gonna hit you!” arm windy thing. I saw no attempt to touch gloves.
I agree
That doesn’t look like she was trying to touch gloves.

Sugar Free Did Not Touch Gloves
If Sugar-Free touched gloves then CB Dollaway did not tap. What’s up with these fighters. Don’t they watch themselves before they open their mouth?
