This is a purer and simpler Meta-Rankings, and we believe the most accurate informative rankings anywhere on the web.

Because opinions are like assholes -- everybody has one and they all stink -- we don't put up our own subjective fighter rankings, we compile and average the rankings of every source we could find online. The full list of sources is in the extended entry.

Note that the points are out of a possible 210.

Talk about domination, the UFC owns this weight class with all of the top ten most highly regarded fighters signed.

Affliction has two of these guys fighting on their July 19th card -- Little Nog and Babalu. Unfortunately they have them fighting other people instead of each other. The news that Nogueria's opponent, Tiger White, is out due to a diuretc bust with another promotion might free them up to put these two Brazilian legends in the ring against each other. The outlier of the month is clearly Brian Stann, ranked #10 by a single web site.

Star-divide

We retooled our approach to include more sources. We also eliminated the weighting we were doing to favor statistical and fan-voting sites.

The goal is to show how the MMA community rates the fighters, not to bore you with our opinions.

Note that we only include fighters who made the top ten of one of our source sites.  That creates some obvious distortions at the bottom of our rankings -- Brian Stann for example is not even considered a top 30 by most sources, but somebody out there considers him a top 10 light heavyweight.

We combined the following heavyweight top 10 rankings: Wamma, MMA Fighting, MMA-ELO, MMA Ranks, Full Contact Fighter, TAGG Radio, 411 Mania, MMA Weekly, Sherdog, Cage Potato, MMA Madness, MMA on Tap, Five Ounces of Pain, FightMatrix, MMA Playground, HD Net/Inside MMA, MMA-ValeTudo Japan, Brawl Sports, Total MMA, Fighters Magazine and Figure Four Online -- giving 10 points for a first place rank, 1 point for a tenth place ranking.

The following sources were checked but were not current enough for inclusion: MMA News, InsideFighting, World Fight.

This is what I put in ufcbloggers fanpost, as my top 10 UFC only lhws. See his fanpost for the criteria and perhaps some reasoning (or lack thereof, lol).

LHW—Deep division, but stalled due to injuries and delays in fights.

1) Rampage 3-0 in UFC against 2 top guys and a revenge fight.
2) Chuck 16-4 in UFC and former champ
3) Lyoto 5-0 in UFC but hasn’t fought the top guys yet (I am a fan)
4) Forrest 6-2 in UFC
5) Wandy 2-3 in UFC
6) Shogun 0-1 in UFC
7) Rashad 6-0-1 in UFC but has yet to beat a top guy
8) Thiago Silva 4-0 in UFC but hasn’t fought top guys yet
9) Jardine 5-3 in UFC
10) Hammil 4-1 in UFC
10) Bonnar 5-3 in UFC

Notes: There are a few guys like Soko and Irvin that could interchange with the lower end, from fight to fight.

Now the meta top 10 from the UFC:

1-Jackson
2-Machida
3-Liddell
4-Forrest
5-Shogun
6-Wandy
7-Jardine
8-Hendo
9-Thiago
10-Rashad
11-Soko
12-Bonnar

oki

Pretty close with mainly flip-flops within one position.

How do Stann and Wiuff get points and they completely ignore Hammil?

I would have rated Soko higher if I was counting his pre-UFC fights, but the fanpost was UFC only based rankings.

The quality and depth of the LHW meta compared to the HW is GLARING.

Nate, kindly elimintate the joke rankings of the MMA Ranks website from the equation, please.

by Brett Jones on Jun 25, 2008 5:58 PM EDT reply actions

then it's not meta-rankings

MMA Ranks is one of the oldest ranking sites out there and they represent a certain mentality in the MMA community.
I really don’t think they’re any worse than MMA Weekly, they’re just bad in a different way—instead of ridiculously overranking certain favored fighters (Gomi, Kang), MMA Ranks will throw a freak into the top 10 for bizarre reasons.

by Nate Wilcox on Jun 25, 2008 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

MMA Weekly has horrid rankings. On that we can agree. However, they seem to manage to get the top ranked fighters in each division correct, and in most cases* the remaining nine fighters in each division make sense, even if they are ranked behind fighters that they have beaten.

Conversely, MMA Rankings has Tengiz Tedoradze ahead of Fedor Emelianenko, NINE welterweights ahead of Georges St. Pierre, and BJ Penn out of their top 20. Either their rankings are intentionally ironic or the people determining the rankings are dopes, and in either case the rankings lack the minimum level of credibility in order to consider them against, well, any other set of rankings I suppose.

I recognize that I take rankings entirely too seriously, but I feel like most people would agree with my stance on this. I am sympathetic to your aim, but should every goofball website who can scrawl the names of ten fighters down be included just for the sake of completeness, or should the meta-rankings strive to calculate the most complete rankings amongst the most credible sources?

*Not their lower weightclasses. Those rankings stink.

by Brett Jones on Jun 25, 2008 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

well I think rankings are fun

but far too subjective to be much more than that.
I added MMA Rank at the suggestion of several readers and it seems like they still get a decent amount of traffic.
Any distortions they add are more than accounted for by their being only one of 21 sites used.
Its certainly not anymore stupid than the fans at MMA Playground putting Frank Mir in the top 10. And they weren’t the only one to rank Mir.

high and low

lots of scoring tabulation eliminate the high and low score – you could do a form of that for the meta-rankings – the absurd gets thrown out.

also – you could strive for a “mean” as opposed to some sort of average.

none of this is black and white…that’s why the conclusion you’ve reached is appropriate – it’s subjective. just listen to the smart people.

He could do a mean and an average at the same time. After all, they are the same thing. I prefer the sums.

Anyone have any info on what’s up with Arona?

And save the PED speculation. If that was the issue he could just go back to Japan. Looking more for when/where we may see him fighting next.

he did an interview a while back

saying he was weighing offers in both the states and japan and was spending the time getting his head together, healing up and training.

Thanks, Nate!

look forward to seeing him back at it.

Did he, in fact, have Dengue Fever going into the fight with Sokoudjou? If so, would that mean his career is over, as there is no cure for DF and, from my limited understanding, it creates excruciating pain in one’s joints?

by Brett Jones on Jun 25, 2008 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I dunno bout Arona, K. Nate says it ain’t true. But Re. Dengue. Yep, there’s no specific cure for it. Just supportive therapy for the symptoms. And the joint pain that comes with it fades away as the patient becomes stable. So, its really not career ending when you contract it since people goes back to their normal (pre-DHF) status.

Too bad Babalu is not back in the UFC. They have really deepened their division and I think he could beat many of their top guys (but apparently not Chuck, lol).

yeah that bums me out too

especially since he fought so few of the top guys in the ufc while he was there - no tito, no couture, no belfort - and at the same time missed fighting the pride guys—wandy, arona, little nog, rampage. Shogun is the only one of that crew Babalu ever got to fight and he beat him soundly.

How is Henderson ranked at LHW when he isn’t fighting there anymore?

by The Legend on Jun 25, 2008 6:32 PM EDT reply actions

Because he fought there within the past 12 months?

by Mike Fagan on Jun 25, 2008 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions

you'd have to ask all the various sites

that still rank him there. I assume since he fought at that weight last year.

by Nate Wilcox on Jun 25, 2008 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Can’t wait for July 19th when Anderson Silva suddenly becomes the number one 205 and 185.

by Simco on Jun 25, 2008 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Just for Fun...

ufc.com has Anderson Silva listed only under LHW, not MW and Henderson listed only at MW, not LHW.
