Snapshot of the Day: Kim Couture
Little did anyone know at the time, Couture not only suffered a broken nose in the exchange, but the bone-crushing overhand right actually split her lower jaw bone in the middle of her chin.HT: MMAWeekly.com
Kim Couture left the Thomas & Mack Center in an ambulance on Friday night, perhaps battered and broken, but she also left with a fighter’s heart well intact.

Man, that looks pretty gruesome. As superficial as it may sound, I think these kind of occurrences are a big obstacle for mainstream acceptance of women’s MMA. For one reason or another, it’s not as big of a deal, to me anyway, when a guy gets messed up in a fight. Women should be able to fight if they choose, but these pics are tough to look at.
I’ll take my hat off to Kim Couture. It sounds like she hung in there for three full rounds even though she was thoroughly battered.

I understand where you’re coming from. I’m all for women being able to fight if they want also, but yeah, a girl with a bloody face isn’t something I like looking at. It’s a natural reaction though, considering our society and culture and how there has been such a push to stop violence against women. So when a woman willingly puts herself into a combat/fight position, it can be kind of hard to swallow.
wow
She looks like Angel Face from Fight Club. That is one of the most hideous screencaps I’ve ever seen.

Re: “As superficial as it may sound, I think these kind of occurrences are a big obstacle for mainstream acceptance of women’s MMA.”
I think the obstacle can be overcome IF we are conscious of treating these occurrences with an even-handed manner. Yes, a fighter may get bloodied or injured in an MMA fight. Yes, this is true for both men and women. Yes, there are women who participate in and enjoy MMA.
As for marketability: hard work, toughness, fortitude, guts, a never-say-die attitude are all marketable (particularly when paired with civility and grace).
There are people who can’t get their heads around the idea that a woman participates in (or even enjoys watching) combat sports. In the past there were people who couldn’t handle the idea that a woman would want to participate in any sport, or go to medical school, or run for political office. Progress takes time.
I agree
It’s important for promotions and participants to be aware that people naturally view violence and women in a different light than they do men. There are quite a few really talented female fighters. I hope they continue to get the chance to put there skills on display.
