Matt Hughes: One More Shot At Glory?
From the fanposts. Kid Nate:
Matt Hughes comments about his future:
Matt Hughes has confirmed to our friends over at MMA Madness that he will be fighting Matt Serra, win, lose or draw, after his fight with Thiago Alves. The UFC has apparently given the fight it's blessing and the fight will take place at UFC 89 or 90 - sometime in October or November.
If Hughes is able to win both fights, he will be given another welterweight title shot.
I'm all for seeing Hughes/Serra regardless of the outcome of Hughes/Alves. But a title shot if he wins both of those fights? How about the stipulation of he only gets a title shot if Fitch gets past GSP? I mean, who really wants to see GSP/Hughes 4 when GSP has dismantled him twice in devastating fashion?

On the surface, GSP-Hughes 4 does sound a bit absurd, given how easily GSP destroyed Hughes the last 2 matchups.
But let’s also consider the hypothetical presented by Hughes in his statement.
Thiago Alves is the next “top contender”, but only if he beats Hughes. If Hughes beats him, Thiago is knocked off that list, taking away the only other contender that would make sense right now.
Hughes then states that after that he fights Serra at UFC 89 or UFC 90. Serra is another guy who could possibly make an interesting fight with GSP, only because of the rubber match factor, and not because he has a legit shot at beating GSP. If Hughes beats Serra as well, he’ll have eliminated another possible figther for GSP.
If both of those things occur, there’s a severe lack of contenders for GSP to fight. Koscheck or Diego would be there, but both of those guys would have to win their next fights (against Lytle and Fiorvanti, respectively) and then have their own rubber match to put either in position to contend with GSP.
Hughes-GSP 4 may not be ideal, but Hughes would’ve earned a shot in this scenario, and from the UFC’s perspective, this rivalry has been the best one in UFC history, and they could sell a PPV with GSP-Hughes as the names driving that card.
I think people would tune in to watch Hughes/GSP 4. I think what the UFC does not want is to see Serra get another title shot anytime soon. He was not a marketable champion and does not appear to be a fighter that the UFC wants holding a title. Hughes on the other hand is loved by the UFC and no matter who came out victorious is a potential fight with GSP would be good news for the UFC. I don’t like the idea that if Hughes wins his next two fights that he is granted a title shot, however. I think that, along with other factors, would need to occur for this fight to be the best choice. There are other contenders who I would have to put ahead of Matt Hughes right now. Should they fail to live up to expectations, then I think Hughes is as likely a candidate as anyone. GSP still needs to get past Jon Fitch and I’ve also heard that some guy named BJ Penn might want to try his luck a second time against the current UFC welterweight champ. Lots of pieces would have to fall into place for Hughes/GSP 4 to be the best matchup in this division.
“I think people would tune in to watch Hughes/GSP 4.”
How would they bill this fight? One last shot at glory? I mean there’s a reason why Couture/Liddell 4 was never made.
I believe that for this fight to happen, Hughes would need to win a few more fights and be looked at as being ‘back on track’ and the biggest threat to GSP. Like I said, not really the ideal matchup right now but if all the pieces fall into place and it is the only direction to go I think it would be able to be billed correctly if Hughes looks dominant against some of the top contenders in the division. Obviously Hughes/Serra is the fight that everyone wants to see, as well as GSP/Penn. After those fights maybe we let the chips fall where they may?

If he beats Alves and Serra convincingly, I could see this happening, but let’s wait and see if he does that first before worrying about it.
Wasn't Hughes...
...getting all weepy about only having 2 fights left? Alves, Serra…retire. Hughes/GSP 4 interests me about as much as Haselrig/Moreno II

Can’t GSP fight someone else? I thought welterweight was more stacked than this. Also, what are the chances of Hughes moving up or down and starting shit there? That would be a lot more interesting than staying at welterweight if he keeps fighting the same blokes.
If anything...
I’d rather see him face Penn one more time…but I’m against Penn moving up until he cleans out the LW division…so that’s probably not a good idea also.

WW is a stacked division, filled with a bunch of very talented fighters.
Problem is, GSP has already beaten almost all of them (dominated them, at that) and those he hasn’t beat have been beaten by guys he’s dominated.
It shows how dominant and great GSP has been at WW.
Hughes has a shot to earn a 4th fight with GSP, but it will take 2 very good wins against 2 very tough guys. Marcus Davis won’t be a factor, he will get beat by the first good wrestler with GNP he faces.
Very true. And yeah, I just had the impression that there would be more people able to challenge GSP for the belt. It seems like the situation’s Anderson Silvafying xD
RE: Marcus Davis – he’s had some pretty impressive wins, but i’m with you on that. I don’t think he’s ever been tested on the ground.
I concur!
I’m not much interested in HUGHES vs ALVES to be honest. I’m more interested in seeing how Davis, Vera, Marquardt, and Bisping do!
Hughes looked worse against GSP last time out, than Sherk did against Penn!
all you gotta do is...
I’d like to see Hughes/Karo honestly….since that fight was supposed to happen at UFC 56…and we never got to see it.
Actually...
...that makes a lot of sense. If Karo were able to win he reestablishes himself as a player in the division.

Not a Hughes fan...
But that sounds about right.
Really, the only Hughes fight I am interested in seeing is Serra. i love a little hatred mixed in, lol.
I also wouldn’t mind seeing BJ part 3, almost more than BJ/GSP.
"They said you was hung!!"
"And they was RIGHT!"
Hughes should have to beat
BJ and Karo before he gets another shot at GSP.
Hell he should have to beat Koscheck and Diego too.
2 more fights?
Surely I cant be the only one who thinks Matt has only 2 fights left in him. Didnt he say on TUF he had 3 or so left, and I think a win over Serra (if he could do it) would be a fitting end. Much more suitable than facing GSP again.
Matt isnt another Ken Shamrock, in respect to knowing when to hang up his gloves. He has said he is a fierce competitor, and he knows when its time, so I would be surprised to see him in the Octogon more than twice. (not including his hall of fame induction of course)
Hughes wants to go out a winner
His ego is too big. For that reason, I think he’ll leave his boots in the ring if he beats Serra.
