Quote of the Day: Jorge Gurgel Makes Changes

“I’m not sure...I’ll be pissed. If that skinny son of a bitch connects with a hard punch, and I start swinging, I’m sure [Hume] will get mad and start yelling at me. I think I’m doing a way better job of listening. I think I’ll be able to compose myself. And if I don’t, I think I’ll just be good old Jorge, swinging and trying to kill somebody.”
-- Jorge Gurgel talking his upcoming bout with Cole Miller at UFC 86 and how his new trainer and camp manager, AMC Pankration's Matt Hume, is making him a different fighter.

Gurgel just doesn't have
presence of mind when he’s in the cage. The guy has a really good skill-set and you certainly can’t question his heart. But he just can’t stop himself from fighting stupid. He’s always brawling when he’s not that great standing. And in the loss to Alvin Robinson, when he did get the takedown in Rd 1, he acted like he was in a JJ tourny—all ground, no pound.
I don’t think you can correct that kind of problem.
