Family Feud: Noons vs Diaz
There was quite a bit of silliness after K.J. Noons' impressive TKO of Yves Edwards last night when the Diaz brothers were allowed into the ring to talk some trash and hype the K.J. Noons/Nick Diaz rematch for the Elite XC 160lb belt. Dave Meltzer has more:
K.J. Noons was speaking with Showtime announcer Bill Goldberg, a '90s pro wrestling icon. The show was promoted around "The Return of the King," with Noons locally billed as "King Karl," as the hometown hero, being born and growing up in Hawaii before moving to the mainland as a teenager.
With his father, who groomed him to be a fighter from childhood, by his side, Noons wished his father a happy birthday and happy Father's Day. Suddenly Nick Diaz, who had stopped Muhsin Corbbrey earlier in the show to earn the next title shot, came out to disrupt the proceedings.
"Don't be scared, homie," said Diaz, with a scowl that they can't teach in wrestling school. Then Diaz flipped off the Noons family, and suddenly, it was a real life free-for-all. The corners started pushing and shoving, some punches were thrown, and Karl Noons Sr. had his hands all over Nick Diaz as security and Goldberg were pulling him off.
Diaz, and brother, UFC star Nate Diaz, then retreated in almost perfect timing, flipping off the irate fans while announcer Stephen Quadros said loudly, "I can't wait for the rematch."
The scene seemed pretty crass and utterly manipulated to build up some heat for the Noons/Diaz rematch. I don't doubt that the emotions were sincere on the Noons' side because the Diaz brothers' antics were utterly disrespectful. And I guess I'm a mark because I'm eagerly awaiting the rematch too. Nevertheless, one thing that hasn't been followed up on much is the utter unprofessionalism of Nick Diaz in blowing the weight limit by 9 pounds and then getting a title shot to follow. Dana White seems to be punishing Thiago Alves for not making weight against Matt Hughes at UFC 85 by withholding a title shot, but Gary Shaw seems to have no such compunctions. Here's a Sherdog video interview with Noons, Sr. talking about the events.

That Dad is ridiculous. He was further back in the cage than anyone and he bullied his way through with that alchoholic face and fat body just to try to get a swing on Nate then grabbed Nick.

Sigh
Kid Nate. Have you not read Cesars response yet? You know, the one about Nick taking in a huge hunk of salt water, getting sick because of it, letting the other camp know about it ahead of time, and also giving money out of his own pocket? Oh ok.

In fact
I frontpaged a post about that last night.
Regardless of Diaz’ excuse - and IMO its no more valid than Thiago Alves’ sprained ankle - the fact is he failed to meet his contract.

What kind of sick makes a guy gain weight?
I know usually when I get sick I lose a good 5-10 lbs. I’m not calling him a liar. But I’m not going to say “okay…you missed by 9 lbs…but hey…you had an excuse” he didn’t “give money out of his own pocket” that is standard practice in MMA and boxing. You don’t make weight…you give up a portion of your purse. I also don’t think saying ahead of time that you’re not going to make weight is really that much more professional.

It’s crazy, in my opinion, that a guy gets an immediate title shot in a division that he wasn’t even close to making weight in. I guess it does make since if the goal is to put on a semi-contrived show, and nobody gives a shit about fighters adhering to the designated weight limit. This is supposed to be professional athletics, right?

Wait a minute... i missed something
When did Dana say he wasn’t giving Alves a title shot because he missed weight?
I’m not saying Nick had a legitimae reason, but
I’d agree salt water makes you sick! I was Jet Skiing in the keys last month, it was real windy, and I swallowed a ton of water and my stomach was uneasy the rest of the day.
all you gotta do is...

Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!.... Props to Gary Shaw and EliteXC for going straight for the trash demographic in record time. Good job! Pretty soon they can just do a lot of posturing, and trash talking, punctuated by hitting each other with chairs and ugly women lifting their shirts—skip that troublesome ‘competition’ altogether.

Well...
...to be fair the WWE doesn’t put too many “ugly women” on television.

Total WWE
It’s like they’re trying to make the Diaz Bros. the Dudley Bros. of MMA. It looks unprofessional and reinforces the image that these guys are just a bunch of thugs in a cage. I blame EliteXC, which obviously set this up knowing what was likely to happen. They’ll do anything to sell a fight. Are bra and panty matches far off?

If they’re gonna be the Dudleys, I wanna see them powerbomb Gina Carano through a table.

I blame Shaw for this more than the Diaz brothers
Not to defend them, but seriously—this was set up to go boom.
