"Nate Marquardt Should've Been DQ'd"

I think the referee did a good job deducting points from Nathan; he just didn't react to the last infraction, the piledriver. I think it was because there were only a few seconds left in the fight. I feel that Nathan should have been disqualified; this is not the first time he has committed such an infraction. I remember back when he fought Cachorrao (Ricardo Almeida) for the Pancrase title; Cachorrao choked out Marquardt and he punched him several times after the stoppage. Renzo (Gracie) jumped through the rope and kicked him two or three times for the cowardly move.

Here's the infamous Renzo Gracie-Nate Marquardt altercation he's referring to:

Perception

People see what they want to see. What really happened in my eyes is Alemeida held that choke a few seconds longer after Nate tapped, nate took offense and threw an extra punch or two in defense of himself. I think it was justified, Andre is spinning it in defense of his fighter. It is what it is.

Agreed

Looked like that to me too. Also, looked a wee bit like Gracie was ready to throw some shots to begin with, since it didn’t take him but the blink of an eye between Nates punch and Gracies kick…

of course, videos be what they be.

Yeah

I’d more or less written that one off, but in light of Nate’s antics against Thales, I’m seeing Marquardt as more and more of a heel, which is an improvement over being bland.
I think a rematch between Nate and Alemeida (if he loses to Cote) would generate some heat. Good grudge match and the winner moves back into contention and the loser leaves the UFC.

Good call. I hope Cote beats Almeida whether or not we get this fight.

Agreed about Nate. It seems as though he has gone from boring (in ufc fans eyes), to the guy they love to hate, which may be the best thing to be, financially.

I want to see Almeida beat Cote, then have Nate and Ricardo fight on the Silva/Okami card, with the winner getting the next shot (at Silva!).

Loser leaves UFC??? What is that like a get out of Dodge match or a retirement match, lol??

Nate is way too nice and respectful to be a heel.

The first knee was a foul. But I believe Nate’s explanation, and the position they were in could’ve been mistaken for Thales being on 2 feet. He wasn’t but it wasn’t malicious.

The “illegal” elbows were not illegal. Perfectly good technique, BS that a point was taken.

The pile driver was actually the worst offense. I haven’t heard Nate address it. The problem is, Nate doing something like that could’ve been borne from him knowing he’d already been penalized 2 points and needed something dramatic to win. Maybe he wasn’t thinking straight and just going for broke. Maybe his intent wasn’t a piledriver. The point is, if Herb doesn’t make the mistake and penalize Nate that 2nd point, Nate might not have even attempted the final move.

and if Nate...

doesn’t land the illegal knee maybe he continues losing the fight as he was in the first round.

The funny thing about this, imo, is that all 3 MAY hve been close to being legal.

1—the knee, obviously illegal, but if Thales hadn’t put his knee immediately back down, we would be talking about what a great shot that was.

2—The elbow, probably was legal, or at least not called by the ref most times. Kind of a heat of the moment call.

3—the piledriver, I’m still not sold on the intent of this move. it was almost 15 minutes into the fight, so he was tired, there was a lot of sweat and blood, making it slick, so he could have had a bad grip, and I just can’t imagine a move like that being intentional, though the end result is the same, so it should probably be penalized.

I’m just a little on both sides on this.

The knee I believe was an honest mistake, after they first stopped it, I was yelling it was legal because all I paid attention to was Thales hand and it looked like right when he lifted it, Nate cocked the knee! But after the replay we could clearly see the knee was down!

So onto the pile driver, probably another honest mistake, but is it one we should condone regardless of the intentional move, because his intentions were the same, to hurt the guy. These guys are professionals in a sport where bending the rules could cost someone injuries or death. I’d agree it’s hard to fault a guy who’s job is to go kick the crap out of the other guy and punish him for doing it, but the fighters should have a level of accountability, whether they are fatigued or sweaty it wont matter if it causes irreperable damage to their opponent! ~end of rant

BTW: I’m a big Nate supporter and I think the loss to Silva has really given him that killer desire to finish fights! The last two fights his GNP were brutal!

all you gotta do is...
