UFC Fight Night 14: Omaha, NE 9/17/08
Last week there was a rumor that the UFC might make its first trip into Nebraska for the September Fight Night promotion on Spike.
According to mmamania.com, the date and location have now been confirmed:
Brace yourselves, Cornhuskers, because the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is set to invade Nebraska for the first time ever in just a few months.
That’s right, the mixed martial arts promotion is in the process of putting together a show — UFC Fight Night 14 — that will be held at the Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha on Wednesday, September 17. MMAmania.com confirmed the venue and location earlier this afternoon with multiple sources.
Early speculation on the possible fight card includes:
Nate Diaz vs. Josh Neer
Houston Alexander vs. Eric Schafer
Ed Herman vs. Alan Belcher
Rumors in the comments over at the mmamania post suggest the headline event might be Guida vs. Danzig.
As someone within driving distance of the Omaha Civic Auditorium, I am absolutely stoked at this possibility. Anyone have an idea how much tickets usually go for on these free Spike Fight Night events?

Date clash
Last I heard, the rumour mill had UFC 88 taking place on either September 13 or 20… assuming that FN#14 does happen on the 17th, that would mean two events within days of each other.
The UFC production team would need a lot more time between each event from a logistical point of view. Sure, they can build up and tear down the Octagon and lighting rig in a 24hr period, but what about transportation etc. – not to mention downtime for the crews?

Last I heard, it wasn't going to be on Memorial Day weekend
They’ve had so many events around holiday dates that I heard they were shifting 88 to the 13th or 20th, so as to allow their staff at least one proper holiday break.
Just because the current string of events have been the first Saturday of each month doesn’t mean that trend will continue.

It’s not unheard of for a Fight Night to come within days of a PPV… in fact, it seems to be par for course lately…
UFC Fight Night 12 January 23, 2008
UFC 80: Rapid Fire January 19, 2008
UFC 76: Knockout September 22, 2007
UFC Fight Night 11 September 19, 2007
UFC 72: Victory June 16, 2007
UFC Fight Night 10 June 12, 2007
UFC 69: Shootout April 7, 2007
UFC Fight Night 9 April 5, 2007
I stand corrected
I hadn’t realised this was the case; obviously the UFC have got the production logistics in place to hold two events within days of each other. It’ll be interesting to see if it goes ahead as rumoured.
