The Fixer
Dan Miragliotta, when the fight absolutely, positively has to go your way.

I've always had problems with Dan.
And the way he lets the crowd control him. As soon as the fans boo he is all over the fighters to “get it going” or stand them up. But this was shameful. Purely disgusting.

I dono, I feel more like Dan was greased by your usual ‘boxing promoter’ suspects. This was the first set of fights of his where I honestly said “really? REALLY?” at the television.
There were some positives from the show but the ref/doctor stoppages were the worst part. Normally I’d say that it was out of the promotion’s control but with Shaw at the helm I’m not convinced.

It reminded me of my teens. Sitting at a party, playing dominos, and having a good time. Then 3 dudes from another school show up, and start shit.
If this had been a UFC promotion, there would be the regular “This card fucking sucks” talk. I’m a little upset that I missed the special on Chuck Liddell. Then again, it was like watching the titanic sink.
I think it was a perfect ending. Poetic justice for the washed up Shaw, and the end of the mystique known as “Kimbo Slice”. (All though I think they will probably ride that foundered pony one more time.)
I’m down with the boycott.

Against my better judgement...
Your words sound familiar somehow:
“Fucking thing sucks.”
“There are no words.”
Next time… they’ll “do it live”? One can hope anyway…

You played dominos at parties in your teen years? Yikes. Did the nursing home make all of you kids leave at round 8:00 p.m.?

Whats wrong with hanging out in the nursing home? I could shit myself and no one would notice.
I’d like to see the “medicual suspensions” report on the fighters from last night. I hope “sloth” can still still lift boulders up without that ear bothering him.

It was a pattern, not a fix
Through out the night there were questionably early stoppages. I’m not sure if was a sub conscious thing and all involved just wanted to make sure the sport seemed safe or what, but there was a pattern to the night.
And to me the fix didn’t seem in the Kimbo fight, I can see the ref stopping the fight. Thompson eyes were vacant and his ear was likely in need of reconstructive surgery.
I intentionally watched the fight with people who haven’t been exposed to MMA, and the Kimbo stoppage made more sense to them then the Rogers, Villasenor or Lawler stoppage.
It’s shame everyone is so negative about the card because of one fight.

Dude...
The card wasn’t very good. Rogers is one of the guys who i am a big supporter of…but the fight was nothing worth anything. A quick KO…okay…good.
Baroni/Villasenor was just watching a never-was get blasted by an under appreciated fighter.
Carano/Young was a big win for Gina…of course she also wasn’t drained from making a cut…since she couldn’t be bothered to even try.
Lawler/Smith was a great brawl…which was ended because the doctor and athletic commission didn’t understand their own rules.
Kimbo/Thompson looked like an amateur fight, Kimbo looked awful and it was so questionable that most people think some sort of fix was in (due to the ref actions as well as the whole scorecard thing)
It was not a good show.

agree with ghettoiam
It seemed like the refs/doctors were quick to stop the fights all night. I would attribute that to the national exposure. Better safe than sorry. Like I posted earlier. Thought the last 3 fights were very entertaining.
Brent – I don’t quite understand what you were expecting from Kimbo/Thompson? Kimbo has 3 MMA fights and Thompson is a brawler. Of course it’s going to look amateur. It still was a very entertaining night. I think the suits will be very happy.

Also
The headline “fixer” is bush league. I’ve always been impressed by the web-site … but that headline is more amateurish than Kimbo’s ground game.

um...
I took it as a reference to the TV Show “The Fixer”
As for what I was expecting? I don’t know. If you’ve been around you know I was very pro Kimbo. But I just didn’t see a thing in that fight that impressed me. I expected to be able to say differently.
And I don’t think the suits will be happy. The crowd turned on Kimbo. They BOOED him. Remember how long it took casual fans to boo Tank Abbott? They love brawlers…they don’t like feeling like they just got worked.

Can't argue with some of what you say
Never seen the TV show!!!!
I was very impressed with his strength. Everything on the ground was based on strength. You had to be impressed with he “swept” the 260+ Thompson just by basically using his arms.
Can’t argue with you about the crowd. I was very surprised they were booing him. Even still the people that booed will probably tune it the next time hoping to see him get knocked out.

Yeah...
I was very impressed by the raw strength of Kimbo. There wasn’t a lot of technique shown (adding to his exhaustion by trying to secure a choke with no body control..etc) but man is he strong.

Technique?
At times, his technique was absolutely the worst I think I’ve seen in a while. It was hard to watch at times. Of course, he was only in his 3rd fight. His initial take down defense seemed decent (of course it was all based on strength) but after he got winded, anything Bas taught him went right out the window. The guillotine looked deep if he only controlled the body. The BJJ 101 there.

Yeah, Kimbo was very strong. The sweep he pulled based on sheer strength was pretty impressive. But his ground game was like amateur hour. There were multiple times where he had absolute no idea what to do. And this is Thompson we’re talking about. Not exactly a ground wiz.
Kimbo is still new to the game, I get it. But there were times when I was visibly wincing.

Never before have I seen ringside doctors enter the ring or corner for that matter between rounds. I can understand if there’s a gash or something, but it seemed to me that the mommy-playing-doctor needed to stay out of things until her medical opinion was truly needed.

So...
...we determined that Kimbo needs to work on his ground game (knew that), that Thompson was stood multiple times (don’t forget to factor in the fact that he sucked on the ground tonight), and well, that’s about it, right?
I think everyone needs to re-evaluate their expectations of an EliteXC show on primtime TV. I kinda expect this reaction though.

I don’t think anyone expected EliteXC to come out with a UFC caliber show. At least I didn’t. What people are so upset about, is the rotten feeling they got after seeing that main event and believing something is wrong. There’s no proof yet that the fix was in, and we may never know, but sometimes you get that awful feeling that you just can’t shake. Is this right? Probably not. I mean a gut feeling isn’t concrete proof, but as the night goes on, and more fishy stuff comes up, like the reffing, the judge scoring, the weird stuff at the press conference where it appeared Gary Shaw was lying about Thompson going to the hospital (or was mistaken about it), and tie that all with what was at stake for EliteXC – that their internet sensation wasn’t exposed as an MMA fraud by their handpicked opponent… It’s kind of hard to deny. Sometimes if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck… it’s a duck.

CALL TO ARMS!
ok, ok, ok….the fight was rigged yes that is obvious. so now what, what are we as a fan base going to do. this is not a polite suggestion, this would be more of a warning call to all of those who have claimed that they love this sport and would like to see it grow. i for one will not be watching this organization’s events. this will do nothing but hurt the growth of MMA. MMA is to young of a mainstream sport to handle or even validate this type of corruption. Kimbo slice may have won, but the sport lost. this, unfortunately, was predicted.

I hope
...the money Dan Miragliotta made was worth what he possibly did to the sport and what he certainly did to his own reputation.
I hope Kimbo goes on to do big things in his career because I would really hate to see the sport set back a few years for a bum.
As for Gary Shaw, I hope he does both MMA and Boxing a favor and dies.

Does he always look like a zombie? If not, then I think its safe to say he was pretty rocked (thus opening the door to the ref’s “discretion”).

Actually, yes, Thompson does generally have a rather “vacant” look in his eyes. And the real problem here is that he was absolutely no more in trouble when the fight was stopped than he was in the second round. But in that round the ref let it continue because Thompson did not go down and Thompson ended up getting Kimbo down and punching and elbowing him in the head for a minute and a half while Kimbo was unable to move or defend himself at all.
Thompson looked rocked, for sure, but if that glass-jawed giant is still on his feet, then he’s not out. Period. And even if he was, the only explanation for stopping it here and not in round 2 when he looked identically, is a fear that he might survive it and get a completely gassed Kimbo back down again. I think it looked like Kimbo was just so gassed that he could not possibly knock Thompson out anymore, and he couldn’t do anything else either, and he already lost the first two rounds, so this was really the only way for XC to save face and keep the Kimbo hype-machine going—a poor stoppage by a shoddy ref.

Yeah, someone referred to him as “special-needsy” looking, which I thought very mean. And… well, accurate. He’s got that cross-eyed thing, and he moves funny best case. After loosing 6 of his last 8, he deserved to at least fight till he got knocked on his ass, in my opinion. Tough to go out like that.
