Bloody Elbow Exclusive: Judges Scorecards for Slice/Thompson
Just got a call from BE editor in chief Luke Thomas in Newark at the Elite SC event.
Luke got his hands on the judges scorecards and here's how they had it scored:
All three judges scored the first round 10-9 for James Thompson.
But in the 2nd round it got weird as Bittencourt scored it 10-9 Thompson, Crosby scored it 10-8 Thompson and Colon gave it to Kimbo, 10-9.
Something rotten in Newark ladies and gentlemen.
As Luke Thomas said to me on the phone just now, "The UFC gets the best fighters they can and lets the chips fall where they may. Shaw tried to control the outcomes and it blew up in his face. And you know what, I'm glad."
Couldn't agree more.
We may criticize Dana White and Zuffa here at BE, but its clear they have the best product in MMA.
The difference in quality between UFC 84 and EliteXC was dramatic. UFC 84 was far and away the better event.

Kimbo is a farce and Shaw’s one man show is over!
Why not stop it in round 2 when Kimbo was eating Thompson’s punches and elbows? That would have been a better stop!!
This was horrible!!!

I disagree...
Kimbo was not eating elbows. They were more like noogies.

I wanted Ferguson and Carano to lose. I didn’t want something like this to happen. This could be a stain on the whole sport.

I totally agree. What a joke. Shaw proves himself to be a true sensationalist, basically turning MMA into a joke in its first national outing. I am so pissed right now.

Thompson gets stood up while having Kimbo in SIDE CONTROL and Miragliotta says Thompson needs to do something while he has Kimbo in the crucifix..bad night for the refs.

OOPS!
Posted the same thing as Nate as I just talked to Luke also. This is crazy fishy. I never call things a fix…but there was too much here to not say that there is something scummy going on here.
I’m sorry to everyone who had to listen to me talk positively about EXC. They’re not a mature promotion.

“Kimbo was not eating elbows. They were more like noogies.”
I agree they weren’t the hardest kits, but Kimbo wasn’t defending himself and he was being hit in the face and head. A stop could have been justified then, but not when it was stopped!
This was bad for MMA! It made MMA look more like the WWF/WWE. Fake! Fixed!

Lol. Same position here. I really enjoyed the live updates, but when I get back… I’m still gonna have to review all the fights a few times. Well… at least checking out Smith will be interesting, if I just turn off the sound of the crowd and the pun machine. Randy sure has an impressive looking (and huge) stable of fighters these days… (there, ended positive—whew!).

I really, truly hope that this only affects EXC and that they have amazing damage control.

Also, I’ve always wanted to ask: are Nick and Luke related at all? XD

...Was the Young fight stopped? Was it because she was cut or did she say she couldn’t go on. I mean i know she was rocked in the 2nd but i don’t recall them explaining why it was stopped. Did i just miss it or was that cut really that bad?

Looked to me like it was a surprise to her, but she didn’t put up much of a fuss either. I think she knew the end was near, but still it was another fishy decision of the night.

I don’t understand why you’re “glad”? Other than all of this fishy business at the end, I thought they put on a “strategically good” event. I say strategically because almost every word had to be thought out in order to put forth the event/sport in the right light. There is no way they could allow a Penn/Stevenson blood bath for MMA’s first primetime event. I NEVER expected EliteXC to take the these types of precautionary measures (not talking about the Kimbo mess) but was surprised.
Do I think the UFC would have done a better job? Absolutely. However, the UFC (i.e., Dana White) had almost every network beating down its door for a deal but due to “control issues” we got the result we are now faced with – the UFC being the only major MMA organization with NO network deal. So, like it or not, this is the promotion that is going to be introducing millions of people to the sport of MMA. I don’t really understand why anyone would be glad that a controversy like this the taste left in the mouths of first-time viewers afterwards.

I can't speak for Luke
But I’m glad that Shaw and EliteXC were exposed for what they were doing - trying to force outcomes.
Having said that, I’m bummed - greatly bummed overall. It was a bad night for MMA.
We need a legit competitor for the UFC—great as it is, any promotion that blackballs fighters like Josh Barnett shouldn’t be 100% in control of the sport.

I thought the event was pretty crappy. The Kimbo/Thompson thing was unbelievable. The best fight, in my opinion, was Lawler/Smith, and it ended in an unfortunate fashion. Young took a pretty good beating in the stand-up, and Carano looked on the verge of being gassed. The other two fights flat out sucked.
Gary Shaw can’t be Vince McMahon. MMA is a sport. It’s not a freaking fictionalized show. This thing was awful.

disagree
From what I saw, the ref stopped both the carano fight and the lawler fight. Nothing “fishy” about that unless you think the doctor is not independent. I honestly think the Kimbo stoppage was reasonable. At 2 times during the fight I thought Thompson looked out on his feet. In the 2nd round and right when the fight was stopped. In the replays you can see the ref looking at Thompson to make sure he was fine. I understand the “complaining” about the standup in the 2nd round but I’ve seen worse.
Near the end of the 2nd round when Kimbo was taking repeated elbows to the head the ref told Kimbo he had to do something and he did (freed his left arm and covered his head). I honestly think a fight stopped in Thompson’s favor in the 2nd round would have been “worse” than the stoppage in the 3rd. Thompson looked totoally out of it. What would you rather have? A questionable stoppage or a signficant injury in the first MMA fight on national networks.
Overall, I thought it was an entertaining evening. The first 2 fights were lousy, but the last 3 fights were very good.
by !claw on Jun 1, 2008 1:08 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
really?
When was the last fight you saw stopped when the fighter “looked out on his feet” in the middle of the ring?
by fanaddict on Jun 1, 2008 1:15 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
woosy stoppage
I agree I have never seen a fight stopped when the guy is still standing even if he looks out of it. I would equate it with a flash knockout. When chuck got dropped by Rampage, his arms went limp but a second later he was defending himself. I think most people think when a fighter is out for even a second the fight can legitamately be stopped. In this case, if I was the ref looking at Thompson looking into space, I don’t think it’s UNREASONABLE to think the fight should be stopped. There have been many worst stoppages in my opinion, including the first 2 televised fights. At least those guys were trying to defend themselves. Thompson may have been on his feet but he was out of it.
by !claw on Jun 1, 2008 1:25 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs

You’re sooooo full of it. The ref was looking at Thompson to make sure his ear was still attached to the side of his head! If it wasn’t for the instant blood caused by the ruptured cauliflower ear he wouldn’t of stopped the fight. Not saying that he should of stopped it, but that’s clearly what caused the alarms to go off in that melon of his.
Adoptive papa to Omar...so basically I'm screwed.

I don’t think there was anything particularly fishy about the stoppages in the women’s fight and the Lawler/Smith fight. The doctors may have been playing it safe. However, Thompson looked as woozy in the second as he did before it was stopped. I just didn’t see him being in any eminent danger. I really agree with the stoppage of the Carano/Young fight. Young was getting pretty beat up. I don’t know if I would have felt the same had it been a men’s fight, though.
by Cannon Jacques on Jun 1, 2008 1:19 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Remember...
Thompson is a guy who goes down like a ton of bricks when he is KO’ed. So I don’t know how out on his feet he could really be.
With James Thompson…there is awake…and sleeping. No middle ground.

To say, Thompson is either awake or sleeping is riduculous. In the 2nd and 3rd round, his eyes were glass and he was looking into space. Clearly we wasn’t awake or sleeping. I guess his middle ground would be “sleep walking”.

Rules State
One must intelligently defend themselves at all times…
Now im pretty sure it doesn’t say anything about defending yourself against powerful blows, and im pretty sure the 30+ elbows and punchs thompson gave kimbo on the head while kimbo just laid there doing NOTHING would fit the rules of a fuckin referee stoppage. Kimbo is the most protected fighter i have ever saw, and the fact the ref let the crap go on for over a damn minute of him getting beat on without stopping it proves it. The ref was paid to protect the hype machine at all costs and he felt “MAYBE” if kimbo was able to get stood up (surviving til the end of the round) he might be able to knock out thompson which he did. Then kimbo hit’s thompson and thompson automatically swings back at him then the ref jumps in and stops it and thompson hits the ref almost saying “if i can’t fight how can i can i do this?” Overall i rate the event a 2/10 and i almost feel it pushed MMA back 15 years cause it felt like UFC 1

This just in…when the show is on network TV and full of commercials, only the SPONSORS can affect weather the show is viable and worthy of their advertising dollar. If you want to make sure that Elite FC is never broadcast again, don’t stop watching or bitch to CBS, because if the sponsors are willing to pay the advertising rates the show will stay on.
Take for instance the whole Don Imus incident with the Rutgers women’s basketball team. Do you honestly and truly believe that NBC pulled the plug on him because what he said was inappropriate? NO. They did it because sponsors yanked their advertising spots away.

Interesting links, but I think we both know anyone could probably rustle up a few racist Kimbo detractors if one tried. Hell, I’m sure we could find a few racist Kimbo supporters if we tried.
He was wrong on #2, IMO. Since you dredged it up… “siverback” is a compliment when applied in the context of an older man. Dominant, the lead of any group you happen to be in. Definitely not to be messed with… I’m sure that is why Miletech used it for his IFL team name and kind of good mascot. No one else uses that to show respect for older friends? Huh.
by swarmofkillermonkeys on Jun 1, 2008 2:16 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You can find racists in any group, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some VERY legitimate reasons not to buy into Kimbo hype. Like the fact that he is the product of a desperate marketing department and built up to heights he can never hope to achieve within his fighting lifetime.
I hate people who stir up race-related debate just to get more page hits. Damn vultures.

by Richard Wade on Jun 1, 2008 2:56 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think if people didn’t resort to knee-jerk accusations, it would be pretty obvious to them that racism is NOT a big reason: contrast the support Rampage and Anderson receive with the disapproval Kimbo receives. The difference is skill and a real fighting pedigree.
by Ark on Jun 1, 2008 3:45 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m actually on the side of the argument that racism is a small reason at most for the majority of fans. I just wanted to make the point that Luke didn’t claim all “Kimbo haters are racist.”
by Richard Wade on Jun 1, 2008 5:36 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Who should I blame
The American high school education system or Ark himself for not having the reading comprehension skills to understand an argument that is quite clear?
Sorry, guys, I apologize up front for being rude, but you have to understand my frustration. The argument I made – and in the posts linked – makes it EXPLICITLY clear that PART of the reason Kimbo is/was being derided was due to racism. PART, NOT ALL. I’ve said it since the beginning and yet people still want to hold onto this imaginary argument. It’s easy to attack me when you boil down my argument or alter it into something it wasn’t. I have always stated there are legitimate reasons to question Kimbo and no one is required to be his fan. But I hear or read racially tinged statements, then post evidence of them – “silverback” is not complimentary when it’s preceded by “deformed” and applied to an African America – and yet people STILL continue to misrepresent what I say.
I’m sick of it.
by Luke Thomas on Jun 1, 2008 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe you should lay off the ad-hominem yourself. I am not a teenager and I am not American.
My position is that racism is not a principal, nor a major reason for disliking Kimbo. Your article boiled down to “People call Kimbo a thug because they really want to say N-word”, which I completely disagree with. You take “thug” to literally mean “a criminal who attacks innocent victims”, when it really means “shady toughguy”.
There are many legitimate reasons to consider Kimbo a “shady toughguy” (“thug”):
-He looks intimidating and has gold teeth
-He beats up unskilled opponents in backyards and parking lots
-He pays random people $100 to punch them in the stomach and tackle them (I’ll link videos if you want)
-He’s a bodyguard for a porn production company
He’s a shady tough guy, and that’s why people call him a thug. Racism is not a part of it. You think it is because, as the ending of your article clearly shows, you think the US is filled with hidden racism that manifests itself in subtle ways.
by Ark on Jun 1, 2008 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, in that context maybe it was meant by some drunken, racist jerk to be derogatory. I’m still not giving it up, I rather like the word. That’s all I meant. I appreciate what you were saying about the larger issue of hyping the race angle (oh yes, he/Shaw certainly did), and the racists responding as hoped. I humbly point out that it is the person making the statement that is racist, not the term.
But in the meantime, when anyone calls this killer monkey a silverback, I’ll take it as a compliment and accept your submission to me as group leader… ;) (No I’m not a Miletech fighter or “the Silverback” Ryan Reeves).

Ban me!
I’m a douchebag. Seriously. And you know what else I have to say? My mama. Oh yeah, I went there. :-)
Lighten up, people! Who cares what internet people say? 99% of the comments you read are posted by one guy named Brian who lives in his mother’s basement and lives entirely off of Oreo cream and expired Yoohoo. If you don’t like what he says, it’s easy enough to just skip ahead.
What would be REALLY handy is something like a kill file. Does anybody remember that from UseNet? You could just tell your newsreader, “Don’t show me any more entries by Tom, Dick and Harry,” and voila! You have a nice clean view, while other people could still talk about what they like. You’d just add a “block” button next to everybody’s name and clicking it would remove them from your view.
It would mean that nobody would ever read anything I wrote again, but it would certainly make things nicer for the rest of you! :-)

But...
That presumes that they’re the final arbiters of quality. Take a look at the comments at FightLinker – lots of insults, lots of rudeness, but it’s almost all in good fun. It’s a different vibe over there, and except for one guy (who got REALLY mad that I didn’t find Edith Labelle attractive and started reading my blog to make fun of my dead wife and my disabled son while leaving comments on my Flickr photos of how ugly my 13-year-old daughter is [creep, no? but he was an exception!]), they never have to ban everyone.
A system that lets individual people block out commenters would allow people to have the kind of experience they like while allowing everyone to have the freedom to say what they want. You could even set it up so that moderators could see when somebody had been blocked by a certain number of people while looking through the comments (flag them in red or something) and then “promote” an individual comment as being worth reading – and mark them as blocked with an unblock option to those who had blocked them. That way people could get integrated back into the discussion over time as they settled down and learned the way that BE readers like to discuss things.
I should really be putting in more feature requests with SBNation – I’ve gotten them to change the login page and consider indicating whether posts have new comments on the recent activity list. I wonder if they need a programmer who could implement all of this…
