Lyoto Machida: An Excellent Defensive Grappler
via www.lasubx.com
Believe it or not, Lyoto Machida is also an excellent pure grappler. The picture above was taken just after his win over Pan Am Champion Rafael Lavato, Jr. just two years ago. Granted, this "fight" took place at LA Sub X, an organization that adopts some strange rules that actually gives defensive grapplers a little extra help (Couture essentially survived against Jacare, but the bout was ruled a draw). Nevertheless, even to survive or draw Lavato is impressive and evidence of the considerable skill Machida possesses.

My priorities when visiting my family for Christmas (in no particular order):
1. Visit family.
2. Stop by Lovato’s school.

Josh Barnett
According to that same website Machida trained with Josh Barnett just before his match with Lavato:

“Pride FC Heavyweight Josh Barnett trained with Lyoto Machita [sic] who will be in one of the Heavyweight Main Event match-ups.”

Machida
It is now time for the UFC to make Machida face an aggresive, forward moving striker who has proven himself to be competitive (ie no Soko).
