Kimbo Slice Takes The High Road
When asked by Loretta Hunt to comment on Dana White's assertion that he isn't a real mixed martial artist, Slice offers a very respectable response. He's also a fan of B.J. Penn. Tell me why folks don't like him again.

Thug
Why don’t folks like him? I can only answer for myself. But I am sick and tired thug talk, thug attitude, and thug anything. Its over. Kimbo makes this sport look like a circus.

Err, what? Kimbo seemed respectful and well-spoken in that interview.
Dana White creates more of a circus atmosphere every time Tito fights than Kimbo ever has.

See...
...this is one of the things that comes off flat racist to me.
Kimbo talks about training and how hard he works and the sacrifices he makes. But you talk about “thug” stuff. Nothing he said in this interview or anything else he has done recently has come across as “thug” at all. It seems to me that you’re equating “urban black man” with thug and in turn equating that with “bad.”

I agree, though I’m not saying MrniceguyMMA is racist.
You don’t hear about Kimbo out beating up guys in bars. You don’t hear Kimbo being charged with federal drug trafficking, you don’t hear Kimbo berating other fighters.
You do hear him saying how hard he trains, how he wants to compete in mma the right way and usually showing respect to fighters/promoters, unless they attack him first.
You know, I wonder why people don’t talk about Babalu, Leonard Garcia, Emerson, Koppenhaver and so forth, in the same manner they do Kimbo? It seems it would be much more warranted.
If you don’t like him, that is fine. If you don’t like him because he is black, well that is fine also, just keep it to yourself.
I honestly don’t think many people dislike him because he is black, but rather because he wears a do rag, has a grill, has a crazy looking beard and has come up in a somewhat controversial manner.
If he dressed like GSP, would people still judge him as much?
I’m personally not a big fan, due to his style, but I do wish him success and greatly respect what he is trying to do in the sport.

His interview was just swell. He talked almost like Leave it to Beavers Dad he was so nice and polite. But have you seen his street fights? How about his last match? You don’t think the nasty overused thug life gang signs crap is gonna make its way to primetime TV as a representative of a sport I love? He is nothing more than a thug who puts on a good face for interviews. Come fight time his Thug mentality will shine through in front of millions. Racist? No. Hate gang bangers, thugs, whatever… yah.

Its not that people dont like him
Most just hate the people who are clueless about the sport and think that Kimbo could beat a Top 10 HW and they take it out on him.
And come on, the fighters that he says that he is a fan of in the interview are either the fighters that he has been doing press with for the EliteXC show or the two fighters that have been in the news for being able to “annihilate” him… Notice how the interviewer asks him if he is nervous after he stummers around trying to think of names to say. Credit to him for taking the high road but it all comes off as being pretty careful.
Good interview

good point. I do think that people dislike him to an extent because of his hardcore fans, his youtube posse and the way he gets marketed.
That part isn’t really fair to him, but that’s life.

I fall into that camp, I think. I don’t dislike Kevin Ferguson the person. I dislike Kimbo Slice the hype.

Reap what you sow...
This may not SEEM like Kimbo’s (or Bas’) fault, but if you are willing to be that hyped with so little fights to back you… sorry but people react. I’m guessing that’s even the “plan”, to make a “villain” to better hype this new thing (that, hey, just by coincidence needed press—and got it from this “controversy”. amazing).
I’m really glad people are finally getting sick of hype, but feel kind of sorry it lands on him. He’s just playing the game he sees working for everyone else, even Tito. Promoters, managers, Dana White, and I guess the athletes that agree to be marketed that way. Though he might have lost control of his image already, I guess there’s plenty of blame to go around. Even to the fans that let themselves get excited by the Jerry Springer weigh-ins (just because we know its fake doesn’t mean it won’t change things for the worse).
I thought one of the “minor leagues” starting up to compete with UFC/Pride would become an actual league with all the best athletes (to protect the new athletes in the sport). Heck we may see that yet if Forrest and Wanderlei dominate the next few fights… Depending out where Tito and Fedor end up, Couture and those fighters that respect him will have insane amounts of pull to create a “fighters union”, or pull everyone out of UFC to another business wouldn’t he? Or is that just impossible for combat sports, and this will always be promotional style where the promoters control everything? It’s quite confusing.
I’m still learning about how boxing business really works, and how MMA is turning out… any pointers or links to help straighten me out would be much appreciated. Especially if I’m sounding like an idiot above—please correct me. :)

I don’t understand the “willing to be that hyped” thing. Should he tell EXC, no please don’t market me to draw the most viewers you can? I don’t want to make money, I’d rather you put me at the bottom of the card and pay me nothing.
I also don’t think it is a plan to make him a villain as he hasn’t said anything even remotely controversial that I can remember. He basically has said in every interview I’ve seen “I am still learning the game but I hit like a truck” and talked a lot about becoming a well-rounded fighter.
