BJJ Training Diary

This entry was promoted to the front page by Nick Thomas.

Guess I'll start posting my BJJ training here. I'm new, only been training for two weeks, but here's my prognosis so far; BJJ is hard.

So far I'm absolutely in love with Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I found, by an amazing stroke of luck, a legit black belt here in Naples, Italy. His name is Marco Galzenati, and it sure seems like he's at least a competition bad ass. He won his division in the 2007 European BJJ Championships, and that's way better than I would have expected to find in Naples. This place is the man's hairy ‘anoose’ of Europe.

At any rate, here is what I know of BJJ so far; my wisdom truncated here for you in precious few words: It f*cking HURTS. Granted, I'm 31 and, uh, not-so-in-shape, but still. I got muscles that are hurting that I have not been heretofore aware of. I got bruises all up and down my arm because my fellow white belts do not understand the concept of not grabbing me with the claws of death when trying to learn a new technique. I keep politely saying "Hey man, I'm not sure, but....I think we're supposed to be using technique, not strength." It doesn't seem to matter. And two of the white belts who started training on the same day as me are enamored with trying to resist each other to death on every single technique, even though a) they don't know the technique yet, and b) they don't even know what realistic resistance is yet, since they haven't rolled.

The instructor has a rule that we need gi’s first (I just got mine), and then we need to roll with him so he can ensure that we're not going to injure someone. I'm not so sure that all of the other dudes that are new are going to be able to roll any time soon, and I offer the huge bruises on my upper arm as exhibit A.

So, I've had 4 classes. We have class on the military base here twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday. I'm considering changing my membership to his gym, where I can train Mon, Wed and Friday, which would be better. My goal is to compete; I really don't care too much about self-defense. I'm 31 and haven't been in a fight yet in my adult life - I mostly stay at home with my family playing video games, and rarely drink to excess, so I doubt if I'll need to whip out my sweet BJJ skillz to save my ass anytime soon. I also want to give a shout out (gayest sentence ever) to Luke Thomas, who took time out to give me advice before I began training. So far his advice has been spot on, and I'm glad I didn't order the nicest gi I could find - I was going to until Luke dropped a truth bomb on my head. He said to not be the guy in the class with the nicest gi who sucks all kinds of ass. Well, I suck all kinds of ass, but the nicest gi I do not have.

Re: BJJ Training Diary
I started training about 8 months ago, and I remember the muscle pain well.  Eventually that starts to go... to be replaced with joint pain from getting repeatedly subbed when you roll.  But it's addicting as hell!

Don't expect to get away without bruises, though.  Even when you start to get the hang of it, when you're rolling, inevitably you end up with an arm pinned by someone's leg, or they roll over top of you while doing a sweep.  My arms are perpetually black and blue.  Which is why I wear short sleeve shirts to work.  Makes me look like a badass.  Which I'm not.

Great post! I love hearing about people's training experiences, especially when they are just starting.  Please keep it up, it'll be good to read about your progression.

Re: BJJ Training Diary
AJB, I fully expect that you are correct and these bruises are just gonna live on my arms for awhile. It's not a big deal, I was mostly just venting that my training partner is excessively rough. He also happens to be my best friend, so I've already told him to calm the hell down. Today we practiced a little and it was much better, so it's probably just beginner's issues.

Thanks, TheFightJournal - I intend to keep posting. Didn't expect to get promoted or even read - this site is great. I don't know how you guys found the flier advertising the class. Took me awhile to find a page that contained it. That page also had the lineage of the gym, which looks pretty decent to my newb eyes.

Re: BJJ Training Diary
Glad youre training and found a BB in my family's hometown.  Yes, there are bruises, yes it hurts, and it will never stop.  Welcome to becoming a Jiu-jitsu guy.  It is trial by arm bruises.  Stay with it, dont listen to McDojo types, and once you have a solid feel, change schools.  BJJ or just JJ is so dynamic, dont ever get that "Well, my school does it this way" attitude.  You'll start to sound like a guy from a school that awards BBs in three years.  I sub BBs all the time, and still dont have mine.  They cry that I sandbag, but hey, I dont have a sensei anymore, so fuck em.  And I didnt get the nicest gi because I expected to get blood all over it, not because I didnt wanna be the best looking at the McDojo.  If you dont break your nose at least twice in the first year, you aint trying hard enough.  Just dont break an ulna.  And never tap to chokes, except in training.

Good luck.  It is a path worth walking, if your man enough to truly want it.  Never listen to anyone but yourself, trust your judgement.  Too many wannabes who have enough $$ to open schools.  Move around.  Best advice I can give.

Re: BJJ Training Diary
Wonderful to hear.  Glad to hear you've decided to start training.  I'll be starting my training in 1-2 months.  I wanted to get back in a bit better shape before I start just because I don't want to feel like I am wasting my time the first couple weeks not being able to breathe well enough to pay attention...ya know?

But certainly I'm looking forward to hearing more of your experiences.

Re: BJJ Training Diary
I hear ya, Brent - when you start training I'd love to hear about your experiences as well. Perhaps we can share tips since we'll both be ultra-noobs. You have much wisdom for deciding to get in shape first - I'm doing it on the fly whilst I train. So far there hasn't been a class that I haven't been gassed just by the beginning drills. The upside is that it's caused me to worry about what I eat and drink the other days of the week. I've never been very self-motivated to stay in shape for fitness' sake, but I want to compete, and I can't avoid exercise to meet that goal. Don't get me wrong, I'm not like 300 lbs or anything...just a normal dude who has a bit of a belly. Good luck!

Re: BJJ Training Diary
Also, watch your breathing. A lot of newbies hold their breath while trying submissions, escapes or in scrambles. Make a point of breathing calmly no matter what. You'll still be tired at the end, but you'll be surprised how much further you can go with proper breathing.

Re: BJJ Training Diary
Thanks, Luke. As I said, all of your advice was great - I got an HCK kimono that is perfectly good. I read about that breathing problem over at submissions101, and it's good to know that you second the advice. I think we're going to get to spar for the first time tomorrow night, and I plan on trying to remain as relaxed as possible and to breathe.
