Miraculously, I've avoided cauliflower ear thus far. But I know my time is coming. Personally, I plan on draining them when they pop.

No ear protection but I use ProTec mouth guards.

Only been with the gi for 9 months, but I'm an intermediate level grappler.

If you can take the recovery time away from grappling that is required for healing for sure get them drained.  You don't want Couture ears, those things are so ugly if he cut them off and just had ear holes on the side of his head it would probably look better.
