Dear Showtime: Fire Bill Goldberg

Or at least demote him. For the sake of your product, you really have no choice.

The fact is Bill Goldberg is a good man. He's a dedicated (if horribly flawed) broadcaster, a huge supporter of the sport and appears to be an all-around nice guy. But when he is given a microphone, he cheapens your product. The Showtime broadcast of MMA events is good, but the UFC's game is a little tighter (commercials and movie trailers notwithstanding). And part of the reason why their game is tighter is because they don't keep folks who are clearly unable to handle the job employed for very long (Kerri Kasem, anyone?).

Here's my recommendation: keep Goldberg around for the "Toe to Toe" segments. He works exceedingly well there. Careful editing cuts out his bumbling and stumbling and captures his occasional wit. He is believable in the role because of his athletic prowess and he is respectful enough to the fighters to make sure the focus is on them and their strengths. That is a role that works well.

But having him interview fighters in the cage is a terrible, terrible idea. He doesn't pose good questions, he pauses awkwardly, is too easily distracted, doesn't respond to producer's keys very well and so on. And in the broadcast booth things aren't much better. Because there are three commentators instead of two, everyone has to be tighter with their language. That would ordinarily be a good thing, but Goldberg - while improved - tends to read what sound like prepared statements. I know every commentator does that, but they are able to sell the improvisational angle much more effectively.

What does he really add? To the newcomers to EliteXC/Strikeforce who watched last night's fights and loved them, nothing. They all noted just how much better Joe Rogan was at the gig and couldn't understand why Quadros wasn't taking Goldberg's job. Granted, Quadros is competent if boring, but that's better than incompetent.

So replace him. Fast. Before the CBS show, in fact. And if you need a replacement, use me. I write speeches for a living. I've done live color commentary for MMA, hosted my own MMA radio shows, hosted my own political talk show on terrestrial radio, and appeared on Sirius Satellite radio and ESPN radio (national and local) to talk MMA. It's a shameless plug, but someone's got to do the job.

lol, I was in agreeance right up until I realized this was a shameless self-plug. Luckily it sounds like they are going to use a different crew for the CBS shows.... I'm crossing my fingers for Gus Johnson as the PBP guy, with a competent fighter/color guy like Ken Shamrock or Josh Barnett

Well, the shameless plug thing is the world's largest shot in the dark. I didn't write the post begging them to hire me. I wrote the post begging them to improve their product. If by some absolute world miracle I got the job, that's just a sweet bonus.

Here's a suggestion:  fire Goldberg, Quadros, and Mauro because they are all terrible at what they do.

Re: Dear Showtime: Fire Bill Goldberg
Mauro's puns and similes can be a bit much, but I think he and 'Dros do good work.

Re: Dear Showtime: Fire Bill Goldberg
I think people like them because they're familiar, but really they're quite awful.

Re: Fire Bill Goldberg
Naw man.  Mauro was getting better, but now he's just complete crap as a commentator.  He overexaggerates everything and is barely competent as a PbP guy.

Quadros is brutal too.  He always has been.  His knowledge of the sport is incredibly limited and his analysis is oftentimes completely wrong.  Plus, he's really creepy.  The Cage Rage commentary sucks too, but is was so much more palatable at the last event merely because they removed Quadros.

Re: Fire Bill Goldberg
I don't know, man. I disagree pretty hardcore. Maybe Mauro's on a slide, but if you watch old PRIDE DVDs, Mauro does a good job of following the technique in a grappling fight. He can spot elevator passes, half-guard sweeps, far side armbars and more. I can't think of a single p-b-p guy who even comes close. And Quadros is subdued but good. He doesn't go deep into technique, but he can't on account of the audience. Is there something in particular you can name from last night that can help me follow your argument? I'm actually pretty curious. I take your honesty at your word, I just need some evidence.

Re: Fire Bill Goldberg
To be truthful, I turned it on mute after five minutes.  I'm basing most of my perception on those and the previous EXC (and other) events.

I do agree that Mauro was good back in Pride.  Everyone ragged on him back then because they were upset that fan-fav Quadros got replaced.  I personally thought he was better than Quadros back then.  And yeah, back then, I would've tabbed him as the best pbp guy in MMA (although admittedly, that's not very hard given that pbp guys in MMA generally are terrible).  But it seems ever since he left Pride, he's just gotten more and more terrible.  He's basically reduced himself to being nothing more than a simile machine.  He doesn't even commmentate on the pbp anymore.

Quadros though?  Geez, I just can't stand him.  He's extremely arrogant and constantly tries to analyze fights as if he were an actual fighter.  How many times did he argue with Bas in Pride about strategic points in the match?  It's like he didn't realize that Bas was a former champ and that he (Quadros) had never stepped foot in the ring.  His insight was limited at best, yet he calls himself 'The Fight Professor?'  Give me a break.

Re: Dear Showtime: Fire Bill Goldberg
I still don't get why everyone loves Mauro.  He insists that every crowd is the loudest he's ever heard.  His puns are downright lame.  I still can't shake the audacity of his claim that Cung Le is as popular as Bruce Lee ever was (when Cung fought Tony Fryklund).  Let's not forget that classless "10 cm pole" thing.

In his defense, he probably has a better voice than Mike Goldberg (and the fact that he doesn't yell "and it's all over" after any fight is stopped probably helps).  But otherwise, I find the guy annoying.

Re: Dear Showtime: Fire Bill Goldberg
There are plenty of competent color commentators, but in terms of play-by-play guys, Mauro is by far the most knowledgeable.

Re: Dear Showtime: Fire Bill Goldberg
I always found the rest of his shtick to be thoroughly grating enough to make up for that.

Re: Dear Showtime: Fire Bill Goldberg
I completely concur.  Goldberg makes the in-ring interviews nearly painful to watch.

Re: Dear Showtime: Fire Bill Goldberg
For my money, they should pay whatever it takes to get Bas Rutten back in the booth. He was the best commentator I've ever heard when he did Pride's shows. Knowledgeable, sincerely funny, and likeable. I also like Rogan, for what it's worth, his love of the sport comes through in his commentary and I think that's important. But Bas was the best.

Re: Dear Showtime: Fire Bill Goldberg
Mauro and Quadros are absolutely awful.  Every EXC or Strikeforce show I have ever watched with non-hardcores has nothinging but them laughing at the cheesy comentary and puns.  It isn't about knowledge...I mean, yes that is very important.  But if the commentary is turning people off of the shows (it is the #1 most hated thing by my casual friends tied with EXC's dancing girls) then it is doing more harm than the benefits of "experience and knowledge" they bring to the table.

They need a whole new crew or at least to speak to them and say "look...this isn't pro wrestling, everything doesn't need to be so over the top.  You both announced huge events in PRIDE, a half full medium sized arena is not the loudest crowd ever.  And cut those fucking puns out."

Re: Dear Showtime: Fire Bill Goldberg
The commentation of these shows is the loswest point. It actually made me mute the audio several times in previous shows, and listen to music instead. And Goldberg is a bit of a meathead, and the Toe to Toe is perfect for him.

Re: Dear Showtime: Fire Bill Goldberg
Off topic, but did anyone notice that Frank Mir wasn't doing the interviews on the last WEC. I for one thought he has gotten progressively better, and the new guy was a tool.

Re: Dear Showtime: Fire Bill Goldberg
i know this doesn't make  a lot of logical sense but i think it had a lot to do with 6'3 or 6'4 250 lb Mir interviewing bantamweight and lightweight guys....just a bit of a nutty visual that kinda undercuts the fighters.  I'm not saying that is right, but I'm sure it played a part.  Same with Goldberg interviewing guys.  Throw a nebbish guy like Jim Gray in there.

Re: Dear Showtime: Fire Bill Goldberg
Are you saying they should have given them a podium to stand on next to Frank?  Personally I think he should have lifted them up onto his shoulder before starting the interview.  :p

all i know is i see frank mir next to uriah faber and i'm expecting a midget tossing contest to break out rather than an interview...lol

I agree with this.  The Kimbo interview was BRUTAL.

Re: Dear Showtime: Fire Bill Goldberg
I think that you would be a real asset for them.

Goldberg is obviously a liability.  You would think that someone with so much on camera experience would be quite a bit more comfortable.  No way he has that job without his name recognition.
