"How Not To Punch" by Doug Marshall

I've already gone over bad punching technique by Jason Lambert.  And as bad as I thought that was, Doug Marshall's wide throwing, hands down, chin up display was even worse.

When you watch the end of that fight Marshall spends a lot of time standing in the same spot firing punches that I'm pretty sure couldn't possibly be any wider (and width is generally the opposite of power in punching).  What's even worse is that the flurry is all noise and no substance.  Of the fifteen punches he throws only one really lands.  Stann is able to sit with his hands up, just waiting to throw a shorter, quicker punch at Doug's exposed chin.

Gunfights aren't always about who shoots the most bullets.  They're about who lands the one shot that counts.

Congrats to Brian Stann, the new WEC Light Heavyweight champion.

Very good breakdown, man.

These guys bust their asses and I'll always respect that, but sometimes you get the feeling that a license requires little more than tats, high-school/college wrestling and an intro to MMA seminar.

Do you believe technical requirements are good enough as-is with the commissions in regards to who they let fight?  Is it schools who should be safer with who they let fight, or is it just something that should be learned the hard way?

Any thoughts from you guys?

I knew Doug wasn't going to hold onto the title much longer his style of fighting is very hit or miss.  Stann's punches were very crisp and he looked a lot bigger then Doug Marshall did last night.  Marshall on the other hand is more of a Brawler hes like a coin flip when he fights you never know whats gonna happen.  Marshall isn't known for his technique but he is a tough guy and my hat goes off to him he took a nasty left hook.

Lets see how long Stann "The All-American" has the title.

Technical requirements aren't needed let the guys learn the hard way.  Hey if you wanna punch with your chin up and your hands down then you wake up with smelling salts in your face.  I know for sure no boxing gym or mma gym in the world teaches you to punch with your hands down and chin up.  Thats just a mental era and some make more mental errors then others.

Agree totally.  I don't think it's a matter of a sanctioning issue.  Some guys will always have big flaws in their game...regardless of if that means they strike with their chins out or can't survive for a second on the ground.  As long as you're trained (no guy should just be pulled off the street obviously), healthy, and willing...by all means go get yourself KO'ed.

Re: "How Not To Punch" by Doug Marshall
Besides, no one can completely master all aspects of MMA - that's part of what makes it exciting.  It's also why a guy like Rich Franklin, who should proabaly have "well rounded" tattooed on his chest, gets killed by a guy like Anderson Silva, who has suspect wrestling, top-notch BJJ (that is still relatively untested), and otherworldly striking.  When Silva wanted to hit Franklin, he hit him.  If Franklin was less of a striker, it wouldn't have mattered; he needed to either get his striking to Silva's level (good luck), or work his wrestling and JJ to a high enough level to take Silva down and dominate him on the ground.

I mean, lots of that goes out the window with the Silva domination of Hendo, but you get the point.  Some guys will always be able to thrive with less-than-stellar striking (or wrestling, or jiu jitsu) if the other aspects of their game are truly dominant.

It looked to me like Rhino overestimated how much he hurt Stann and was looking to finish in a crowd-pleasing style.

Bad decision.

Note to Stann: Wait until the Ref stops the fight to start celebrating, lol. I was cracking up when he threw his hands in the air after that left!

Especially with Herb Dean as the referee.  Just because a guy is unconscious and can't defend himself doesn't mean Herb's not going to require you to hit him five or six more times in the face before he stops it.

Lol, yeah, everyone knew that the fight was over except Herb Dean. Stann and his happy @ss knew it. The audience knew it. Even Marshall knew it. You could see the look in his eyes of, 'Oh God, he's not done punching me!"
