Rant: Stop Dubbing Over Fighters

I have never met a single person that would rather see a foreign movie dubbed over than see it in its native language with English subtitles.  This is primarily because dubs are corny, lose the intended emotion, and tend to blend together.  For all these reasons, The UFC needs to stop dubbing over its foreign fighters.

The conventional wisdom that people are so dumb they have to hear things in English is wrong.  Some of the best moments on TV in terms of drama in the last few years have been with subtitles (see:  Lost), and they would have lost all their meaning if they were dubbed over.  Everytime I hear that dub guy's voice I just want to scream.

Re: Rant: Stop Dubbing Over Fighters
Most MMA fans are mouth breathers. Making them read text on their TV is probably asking too much.

And the hardcore and intelligent MMA fans probably don't feel the need to watch the countdown shows, so why cater to them?

Gotta appeal to that lowest common denominator.

You know when it was really, REALLY bad? The voice over for Yushin Okami last night. The thing is pre-recorded, but it's clear to me that they did one take of him reading off a sheet he was seeing for the first time. It sounded so wooden and uninterested. It was, in a word, awful.

That's funny.  My friend asked me about this at the event, and I hadn't even thought about it, but am +++ captions > overdubs.

Re: Rant: Stop Dubbing Over Fighters
I have, sad to say, met a lot of people who hate reading off the TV. There are a lot of them, which is why it's easier to find dubbed versions of movies than subtitled ones at some stores.

I agree that dubbing is bad (Mmmmkay?), but to say that nobody likes it is wrong.

The difference between VO interviews & film is that film is a visual artistic medium - those who favor dubbing over subs (I'm not one, but I know a few) say that subtitles distract from absorbing the shot.  I say any good film worth watching once is worth watching twice.  The UFC countdown shows are just talking heads, so while I'd rather have subs, it's not critical.

I don't see how putting words at the bottom is going to make the fighters dialog any more interesting.  You'll be busy reading instead of seeing their body language facial expressions.
The only people that should be complaining are those that understand the native tongue of the fighter.

I don't care either way but I don't see much logic in asking for subs instead of dubs.

Re: Rant: Stop Dubbing Over Fighters
i hope they don't switch over to subs....... the guy that does the voice overs for Thiago Silva is way too entertaining to get rid of..... he was the most entertaining thing about UFC 78...... he was working some method actor shit on those things...

I don't really have any problem with the dubbing.  I prefer sub-titles, but I think a majority of people would rater keep the dubbing.
