Badr Hari Still a Possibility for K-1 Dynamite

Badr HariPromoted to the front page from the FanPosts by Luke Thomas.

Despite initial rumors that he has been suspended indefinitely Badr Hari is still a possible participant at this months fields Dynamite. A Croatian source is reporting that he has been offered a fight with Mirko Cro Cop:

"Immediately after K1 Word GP Final FEG had offered Hari a fight with Cro Cop. The Moroccan feels embarrassed about his performance during the final and says he lost his mind during the fight. Negotiations have began for a return at NYE and his chance for redemption."

The company is stuck between a rock and hard place. Hari has become become a huge attraction after his spectacular performance at the GP and his bizarre actions in the final:

There is still no official word from FEG as to what Hari‘s punishment will be. It’s a difficult predicament for the organization who on the one hand have the integrity of the sport to protect while on the other could cash in on the situation.

Alistair Overeem would love to fight Hari according to Bas Boon but that is extremely unlikely as Hari has almost no MMA experience:

"Hari took the microphone and told all MMA fans that he thought MMA was gay and a bunch of huggers and that K-1 was the real sport, well I guess things have changed in the last few months for Badr Hari, if FEG does not suspend Hari, it would be nice to see Alistair vs Badr Hari (who apparently seems to have changed his opinion over MMA fighting) at the Dynamite show this year."

So let me get this straight...

This guy goes off and ignores the referee and rules, shows complete disrespect for the organization, his opponent, and his supposed “fans”….. they’re gonna reward him by giving him more fights and the potential to make a lot of money?

What kind of presidence is this setting? They do this and they are more less saying that what he did is acceptable….

Feed him to Cro Cop and Overeem…. I guess this is just par for the course with the fight industry now a days. Might as well get use to assholes like Junie Browning and Badr Hari doing whatever they want because there are no real consequences for their actions.

by Gunslinger20 on Dec 9, 2008 9:32 AM EST reply actions

i'll set u straight

badr hari is awesome. he is my new hero. look, he’s not a great guy…his nickname is the ‘devil prince.’ but man oh man, can he fight. someone w/ his skills and chin will always have opportunity. his craziness just makes him more marketable.

good things happen to bad people.. the world is not fair and equitable. there is no karma. good guys can and do finish last . the world is not black and white….there are many shades of grey.

by Headkick on Dec 9, 2008 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

right, but he’s a professional in a paid sport. This isn’t a back alley street fight where anything goes. You have to assume a level of professionalism when you sign to fight in a professional organization. There are rules for a reason.

by lbk on Dec 9, 2008 12:16 PM EST up reply actions

Look, if he did it multiple times in a row, the guy would be banned. This was, so far, a one time deal. In the heat of battle, it is to be expected that certain individuals are going to snap. I’m not saying it’s warranted or justified, but it should be expected.

What everyone seems to be talking about is banning this guy for life or something. That would be the equivalent of locking every criminal up for a life sentence regardless of the seriousness of their crime. Rules and laws are set up for a reason. You pay an equal punishment in accordance with the wrong you committed. Hari is likely getting his purse stripped and some type of fine to boot. I would deem that equitable.

Now he has become a “heel” of sorts in the sport and promoters have every right to take advantage of that. When somebody finally kicks his ass, which Cro Cop or Overeem likely would, it will be that much sweeter.

by dropkick101 on Dec 9, 2008 12:51 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t understand why you would think it is “expected” a guy would snap. Because..it’s really not..

These aren’;t amateur steetfighters who you would “expect” to snap. Plus, the execs can’t be happy that this happened when most americans were seeing K-1 for the first time on the HDNet Broadcast.

I’m not advocating banning him for life at all. He should def be suspended through the end of the year though.

by lbk on Dec 9, 2008 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

That sounds appropriate, too. My point is that a lot of people are blowing this out of proportion. The punishment needs to fit the crime. And yes, in a combat sport it can be reasonably expected that there will be a fighter once in a blue moon who lets his emotions get the best of him. The fighter should be punished accordingly, no more and no less.

by dropkick101 on Dec 9, 2008 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

He’ll beat Cro Cop for sure, but Overeem will pound him out.

by cyph on Dec 9, 2008 12:07 PM EST up reply actions

Newsflash

Hari was disqualified from the K-1 Final and shamed in front of the whole audience. To suggest K-1 feels his actions were acceptable is wrong. Conflating him with Junie Browning is just bizarre.

by smoogy on Dec 9, 2008 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

Bizarre?

Both broke rules and neither faced any consequences for their actions…

Not the same situations by any means but the turn out is pretty much the same.

by Gunslinger20 on Dec 9, 2008 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

Did I miss some development concerning any official word on his punishment? He was disqualified from the finals, he did have to forfeit his entire purse, and he is likely going to face some kind of supension. Those are consequences, aren’t they? As opposed to Junie Browning being given repeated chances with absolutely no consequence and then getting promoted to the main card as a reward for his screw ups.

Maybe I’m mis-reading something, but I don’t see how Badr Hari has not faced any consequences — he’s had some already and likely will have more before it’s all said and done.

by Kierkegaard on Dec 9, 2008 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

Once again...

Nothing has been said by K-1 in regards to his punishment, no official announcements.

Disqualified and loss of money, that was instantaneous with the red card…. for what he did, in my opinion.. not enough.

by Gunslinger20 on Dec 9, 2008 6:13 PM EST up reply actions

Gotcha.

I see where you’re coming from, but it seems to me like the two situations are still substantially different. Just because the DQ and the forfeiture of all purses was automatic under K-1 rules doesn’t somehow mean there were no consequences for Hari’s actions — those are still consequences. If the TUF contract included a clause that said throwing a glass at someone results in automatically being removed from the TUF tourney, that would be a consequence, too. Unfortunately, it doesn’t.

So on the one hand you have Hari automatically being DQ’ed and automatically forfeiting all purses from the grand prix. Those are significant consequences, even if it’s arguable that there should be more to come (and there might be more to come). On the other hand you have Browning being given more airtime than he deserves, being allowed to keep fighting in the tourney, and being given a main card fight on the finale. Those are no consequences.

I don’t necessarily disagree with you that there should be more consequences for Hari, like some kind of period of suspension. But I do disagree with the notion that his situation and Browning’s both involve “neither fac[ing] any consequences for their actions” or that the “turn out is pretty much the same.”

I also agree with your notion below that it’s important not to go too far because this guy is an incredible talent. I really hope he gets his act together after this because his potential is just through the roof if he can get his head screwed on straight.

by Kierkegaard on Dec 10, 2008 10:56 AM EST up reply actions

I see what you're saying

I was merely using the Browing comparison just because they were talking about apparently putting him in fights w/ Cro Cop or Overeem… those fights would be huge and he would be bound to make a lot of money in both fights. Honestly, if those fights were set to K-1 rules and not MMA, I think Badr Hari takes either fight and he should make a lot of money off the fights. Those matches could be huge for K-1.

In retrospect, I think people put more thought into the Junie comparison than I did… I just saw two trouble makers who do what they want and are going to be getting a lot of money without really being punished for their actions.

Well, Hari losing his money and losing a lot of face in front of one of the biggest crowds in K-1 history maybe enough…. Browning getting beaten like a school yard bitch by Escudero on national TV may have been punishment enough as well. I hope Hari pulls it together because the dude is an amazing fighter and he’ll be one of the focal points of taking K-1 to the North American mainstream (since its already huge in Europe and Japan)…. Junie, well he can flip burgers at Fuddruckers for all I care. I’m rooting for Dave Kaplan regardless on Saturday… I would rather see Krystof vs Shane Primm or Eliot Marshall vs Jules than that fight.

$$$ talks and all the other BS walks.

Loop it.

by lbk on Dec 9, 2008 10:20 AM EST reply actions

As much as I hate what the guy did in the GP I would love to see him against Cro Cop. He would get destroyed in K-1 and MMA against Cro Cop.

by Discman2 on Dec 9, 2008 11:53 AM EST reply actions

Cro Cop has no ground game. How in the world will CC beat Badr Hari? It’ll be a straight kickboxing match and Badr Hari will turn him into mush. Furthermore, 6’1 VS 6’6"? Forget about it.

by cyph on Dec 9, 2008 12:09 PM EST up reply actions

I agree. Not to mention that well…cro crop isn’t destroying anyone these days let alone the best pure striker in the world right now.

by lbk on Dec 9, 2008 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

Who said Badr had a ground game? CC’s ground game is better than Badr’s. I mean the last time Badr was on the ground he got choked out in under a minute by some nobody. Cro Cop atleast knows some of the workings of the ground game since he was trained by Werdum.

In straight kickboxing I’d still take CC over Badr. But I <3 Cro Cop so many I’m a bit biased. I think people are giving up on Cro Cop after his recent performances, which is somewhat understandable.Im not giving up on him yet and if he were to face Badr I think Cro Cop would beat him.

by Discman2 on Dec 9, 2008 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

Heh, CroCop would have virtually no chance in a K-1 fight with Hari.

by smoogy on Dec 9, 2008 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

you do realize he has wins against LeBanner, Remy Bonjasky, and Peter Aerts..right?

I’m not saying he could beat Badr, but I think he def has the trackrecord to make it competitive.

by lbk on Dec 9, 2008 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

And those wins came when those guys were at the top of their games. Badr beat Alerts just now, but I think the consensus is that he is way over the hill.

by Discman2 on Dec 9, 2008 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, thats about as obvious as bias gets. CroCop’s striking has gone way downhill.

That said, the question is, what is Badr’s ground game like? If he’s secretly training MMA in his downtime, he could beat Cro Cop like a bitch. If not, CroCop could sub him in 30 seconds.

Poor ground game > no ground game.

by Michaelthebox on Dec 9, 2008 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

Whose to say Cro Cop’s striking has gone way downhill? Gonzaga is such a large and powerful guy that he has the ability to knock anyone out. On top of that, in an MMA fight against a guy like that Cro Cop had to be wary of Gonzaga’s ground game – ie takedowns. And Kongo has a 19-2 kickboxing record with 13 knockouts.

A year and a half ago people were singing a different tune when he beat Minowa, Yoshida, Barnett, and Wanderlei in a row with strikes. At 34 years old, I don’t think his striking abilities have diminished so greatly in a year and a half.

by dropkick101 on Dec 9, 2008 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

“Bonjasky: "Yes Mirko lost something of his stand up skills but its normal after he left K1 six years ago and went to MMA, but we are training here excellently and I am here to improve that.”

Maybe “way downhill” is an overstatement, but he’s lost significant skills.

by Michaelthebox on Dec 9, 2008 1:10 PM EST up reply actions

I think it would be an interesting fight but I don’t think it’s fair to count out Cro Cop when he has beaten world class competitors like Le Banner, Aerts, Bonjasky, and Mark Hunt all under kickboxing rules. Cro Cop might’ve had a bad few fights against Gonzaga and Kongo, not to mention the Overeem fiasco, but I don’t think the guy is down and out.

by dropkick101 on Dec 9, 2008 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

Is it safe to say that the Cro Cop of today is not the Cro Cop of 3-4 years ago? Cro Cop is an undersize heavyweight. Is it an accident that the winner of the last two years GP was a huge 6’10" guy, and the two finalists were 6’4 and up? Size matters. Badr will stomp Cro Cop. Perhaps if Cro Cop take Badr to the ground he may have a chance. However, since when has Cro Cop taken anyone to the ground?

by cyph on Dec 9, 2008 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

Ok, I hated what he did the other night and he deserves to be punished for it. That said, i think this whole thing is getting blown way out of proportion. Slow motion replays and such make it look far worse than it was. Like i said, fine him, put him on double secret probation, whatever, but let’s keep it realistic.

Now that doesn’t mean I think he should turn around and get another big fight immediately, but I think a fine and DQ is probably enough in this case.

Eliot Marshall: Bader won. Like I said in the episode, I'm not going to make any excuses. It's my job to be able to deal with when somebody's doing that. It's not his job to change up his tactics.

You think it’s being blown out of proportion? The guy had a huge meltdown. He’s supposed to be a professional. You can’t pull that kind of stuff and not expect it to be blown out of proportion when you are that level.

by lbk on Dec 9, 2008 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

It wasn’t as huge as it is being made out to be, imo. I watched it and I thought it was a terrible action by Hari, but he did little damage and no long term damage. This isn’t Tyson biting holyfield’s ear off or anything remotely like it. Interfering with the ref is worse than what he did to Bojansky, imo. If he had a track record of this, then fine, but as far as I can tell, it is his first offense of this type.

CroCop?

Mirko is not healthy enough with that knee injury to rematch Overeem on NYE, but he’s okay to fight Hari???

Yeah right. Sounds like that Croatian site is stirring the pot for Mirko.

by Gygax on Dec 9, 2008 12:57 PM EST reply actions

Well, he’s clearly dodging Overeem IMO. He wants nothing to do with another fight there trust me lol

by lbk on Dec 9, 2008 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, he is thinking with his testicles…or at least one of them, the other one probably still has a concussion.

by iiowyn on Dec 9, 2008 1:03 PM EST up reply actions

Bullshit. DREAM makes the calls and they don’t want to reward Overeem with such a high paying rematch fight after he basically ruined the event with his knees to the balls. Or whatever crazy matchmaking ideas they have over there. Cro Cop challenged Overeem to fight in his basement.

by dropkick101 on Dec 9, 2008 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

Badr was stripped of his HW title, lost his entire purse for the GP event, and was chastised and ridiculed in front of the world. Now he has to prove himself all over again when he was on top of the sport.

Who is saying that K-1 is condoning his actions?
Whether he paricipates in Dynamite, he still got punished for his actions.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Dec 9, 2008 1:13 PM EST reply actions

This thread is getting funnier by the second. First and foremost, whether you hate Badr Hari or not and believe his antics were disrespecful, he’s still a potentially devastating striker in the K-1 ring. He could at any given moment end a bout with one blow, and that’s what sells in K-1. His comeback win against Zimmerman was one of the best K-1 bouts of the year, and it baffles me that people still get all huffy over the fact he stomped Bonjasky.

Listen, it’s over. Bonjasky got his revenge in a $400,000 dollar check and a shitty acting job. It doesn’t refute what Hari did. It was stupid, disrespectful, and downright ridiculous to do in a Finals matchup, but it will setup some interesting fights next year, and it’ll sell Hari even more as the “bad boy” of K-1.

Hari vs. Crocop is a stupid matchup for the pure fact that even if we consider Crocop’s K-1 performances in the past, Hari is just downright incredible in the striking game and he’s been fighting K-1 for the past few years while Crocop hasn’t. I think it could be interesting if the old Crocop returns, but I think it’s a terrible match. I agree wholeheartedly with degenerate MMA friend, smoogy.

Hari vs. Overeem in an MMA matchup is ridiculous as well. What is this? K-1 throwing Hari under the bus for stomping Bonjasky. That fight goes one way. Overeem takes Hari down and knees him to death, plain and simple.

Hari threw away a chance at a huge pot of money, a championship title, and now everyone is up in arms. Who gives a shit, honestly. He was already ridiculed in front of 17% ratings, he’s an idiot, we all get that. He’s still amazing to watch. Bonjasky won, fair and square, milked it, whatever you want to call it, he got his money and win. Done.

by Leland Roling on Dec 9, 2008 1:53 PM EST reply actions

It’s called breaking rules. You break rules you get punished. Very simple.

by lbk on Dec 9, 2008 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

I completely agree w/ Leland. He has been penalized appropriately. And regardless of that final match, this dude is the real deal and I pray he gets into MMA. What a chin!. What speed and combos!

And LBK, what’s your deal, are you like the hall monitor at school or something?

by Headkick on Dec 9, 2008 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

You break rules and get punished, wow… such a blinding realization.

Honestly, you truly believe that the stomp was excruciatingly debilitating to Bonjasky? I know what the counter will be to this statement. He broke a rule, and he should adhere to the punishment no matter how much damage it caused. I don’t even care. I think the punishment of being DQ’d from the final, losing 400k, and losing the title is enough for an almost missed foot stomp.

This wasn’t Wes Sims vs. Frank Mir. Give it a rest.

by Leland Roling on Dec 9, 2008 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

Nothing has been confirmed...

No word yet on any punishment for Hari…

I’m not saying ban the guy for life because that would be denying the sport a great talent.

I say the stripping of the title, losing ALL of his GP earnings, and being suspended for a while seems like a justified punishment. You do the crime, you do the time. Make him earn his place back up at the top because his actions were not that of a champion.

After all is said and done, I’d love to see this guy vs Cro Cop or Overeem in a match of any type whether it be K-1 rules or MMA.

by Gunslinger20 on Dec 9, 2008 2:23 PM EST reply actions

Want to know why this is being blown out of proportion?

The last couple of weeks since UFC 91 has been really boring and not too many stories that carry much interest are coming out…. K-1 has been growing in popularity and to some this is a story that matters. I’m sure after Wednesday, not too many are going to be discussing this but t this is what is happening today.

I personally can only stand so many previews of Koscheck vs Yoshida…

by Gunslinger20 on Dec 9, 2008 2:31 PM EST reply actions

Plus it was the first live full card most of us have seen from K1, so it probably had a higher viewership than past ones.

Eliot Marshall: Bader won. Like I said in the episode, I'm not going to make any excuses. It's my job to be able to deal with when somebody's doing that. It's not his job to change up his tactics.

Hari will likely never be the real deal in an MMA fight. I don’t really understand how this rumor of him fighting Overeem in an MMA fight is actually even considered by anyone. It must be a complete farce. Overeem would easily knee Hari into the next life on the ground.

Hari vs. Crocop with K-1 rules seems more believable to me.

by Leland Roling on Dec 9, 2008 3:40 PM EST reply actions

whoa now.....

agree the overeem rumor is stupid.

but badr hari is the real deal and i think he’d be fantastic in mma. obviously the striking is there, the chin is sure there, the heart is there, the bad intentions are there, the size is there.

just teach him the chuck lidell/crocop version of sprawl and brawl.

by Headkick on Dec 9, 2008 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t know if I agree that Badr Hari has an iron chin. While he can take some punishment, he was dropped by both Zimmerman and Bonjasky… but then again, we’re talking about K-1 strikers.

Honestly, it takes a long time for K-1 guys to really learn the ground game, and I don’t think Hari will pick up countering tactics in a few weeks. Look at Manhoef, one of my favorite strikers in fighting today. He has some good MMA skills, unreal power, but his ground game sucks and he’s terrible on the ground. Hari would be much the same I think, but I do agree, sprawl and brawl is exactly his style if he was going to go MMA.

by Leland Roling on Dec 9, 2008 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

those knockdowns are where i’m coming from.

the Zimerman knockdown wasn’t cuz he was dazed or knees buckled. it was simply because there we so much force that the laws of physics dictated he be driven to the ground. the guy wasn’t glassy eyed or fazed, and then he got up and later put Zimmerman down.

the bonjasky one was interesting too. he was a little hurt from a prior punch, i think abody shot maybe, and he saw the headkick coming. rather than block it, he was just like, ‘fuck it’ and fell backward essentially ducking it. i’m sure his attitude was, ‘who cares about points, i’ll KO him soon’

to have that kind of presence of mind and coordination is unreal…

no, in mma he’ll never be a fedor or pound for pound king, but he might become the most entertaining guy in mma. i like your manhoef comparison…. he had a good showing too. actually that was my 1st time to see manhoef do kickboxing, previously i’d just seen mma and sorta thought he was mediocre.

by Headkick on Dec 9, 2008 5:06 PM EST up reply actions

Why all this this talk about punishment?

Badr got fined and lost a chance to get the title.

Now compare that to other sports… (I`m not just a MMA-fan you know.)

In hockey:- They tend to get into fist-fights atl least once every two games. What happens? They can`t play for the rest of the game.
-They hit a guy with the stick (maybe over the throat?) A couple of games off.
-They tackle a guy head-first into the side of the rink. (compare it to a pile-driver but in a crazy angle and with speed). 2-5 minute penalty.

Soccer: -You hit a guy. 2 games suspension?
You do a double footed sliding tackle from hell breaking your opponents leg clean off? Sent off (maybe) Suspension 1-2 games. Maaaaaybe a fine.
-Head-butt. 2 games suspension?

From MMA: Marquart does a Piledriver AND an illegal knee. Result? He complains about beeing robbed. Babalu chokes a guy (that has tapped) out. Result? Out of UFC, nothing more. BJ freakin Penn ADMITS that he held on the choke he had on Pulver for some extra time due to him beeing pissed of at Lil Evil. Result? Nothing.

I could give you a lot more examples and from more sports too, but you get my drift right?

My point is, he`s been punished enough. If he does it again, then it`s another story.

"They called him the axe-murderer because he was murdering chumps. They should have been calling him the chump-murderer..." Rampage Jackson (commentating on the fighting abilities of Wanderlei "F#ck Chuck" Silva.)
