Out of Touch with Reality: Justin McCully Edition

Justin_20mccully_20pic_medium

From MMAJunkie.com:

For me going from Antoni Hardonk to Gabriel Gonzaga, that's probably the two toughest fights I've ever seen anybody have in the UFC.

There's no doubt Hardonk is a good striker but at the same time he is nothing more than a B-level fighter, a guy on the lower level of the heavyweight ladder. Gonzaga is a legitimate contender. Are those the toughest fights anybody has had in the UFC? Absolutely not. That is an absolutely ludicrous statement.

Dan Henderson came in and fought Rampage Jackson and Anderson Silva in a row. Brock Lesnar fought Frank Mir, Heath Herring, and Randy Couture in his first three fights with the company. Clay Guida had four fights in a row against upper quality ligthweights - Din Thomas, Tyson Griffin, Marcus Aurelio, and Roger Huerta. I could go on for days.

There are no easy fights in the UFC. There are no gimmes. Every fight is going to be tough. McCully fought a B-level guy and then a contender. That sounds pretty normal. Every fighter has to self-promote in interviews but to come out with completely nonsensical statements just makes you look out of touch with reality.

McCully, I will take this one as a slip of the tongue, a mistatement. If it happens again, I'm going to start believing that the moniker of "The Insane One" is more than just a silly nickname.

I read this on Junkie...

This was the straw that broke the camel’s back with me, I won’t be going to that site again.

This guy is insignificant and dillusional to boot… so yeah, I share the hope that this was a slip of the tongue but why was that story ever done anyways.

Yeah, MMAJunkie was one of the first MMA sites I started going to a few years back along with FiveOunces. Both sites have really lost touch with me for the most part and now I only visit occasionally to see if they broke any news that any of the others haven’t picked up yet. Now it’s pretty much all BloodyElbow, CagePotato, and Fightlinker.

Ditto.

Unfortunately, Junkie has also turned into Sherdog 2.0 with some of the people posting over there. I rarely bother with them anymore.

As for mcCully…yeah right! Off the top of my head, i would say Hendo has had it pretty tough…Rampage…Anderson…Palhares. Of course, if you look at his record, it is pretty tough and legit from top to bottom.

Eliot Marshall: Bader won. Like I said in the episode, I'm not going to make any excuses. It's my job to be able to deal with when somebody's doing that. It's not his job to change up his tactics.

Randy, BJ, GSP, Liddell – anybody who is considered a top fighter is consistently in high profile bouts against top competition. In McCully’s defense, MMA is now at the level where everything you say is going to be scrutinized by fans and experts alike. With that, you better watch what you say and not blurt out any nonsensical garbage like we’ve seen here.

I knew I liked you guys...

I hear good things about FightLinker… never heard of Cage Potato… but Bloody Elbow has just been a lot of fun for me and I’ve learned a lot of good shit from the Admins of this site and you guys as posters.

Justin McCully… Dana White called and his toilet is plugged up again… hop to it, buddy..

by Gunslinger20 on Dec 7, 2008 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

I knew McCully must be doing something extra on the side to keep getting fights in the promotion. Cleaning Dana’s shit tank? Who would’ve thunk?

Don't ask...

You don’t wanna know what Eddie Sanchez is doing to stick around….

Man, the comments over there.
Seriously…

by Simco on Dec 8, 2008 1:58 AM EST up reply actions

McCully’s characterization of his entry into the UFC is nothing short of absurd. He discounts any of the number of fighters from TUF – like Kenny Florian – who entered the UFC in unnatural weight classes and had to work their way down in weight. Freaking Jeff Curran fought Serra at 155 and now the guy is calling out Miguel Torres. I could go on and on and on.

by Luke Thomas on Dec 7, 2008 8:41 PM EST reply actions

I heard about Jeff Curran

Him calling out Miguel Torres just didn’t seem right to me… thats a fight that I would definitely watch but my money would be on Torres all the way.

by Gunslinger20 on Dec 7, 2008 8:45 PM EST up reply actions

I think what Luke meant by that was that Curran, like many other fighters, has fought against guys that he gave a lot of size up to just to get himself into the UFC. This is an example of guys who truly were dealt a tough card in this sport and fought the odds to become successful. I would bet on Torres too but I wouldn’t count Curran out. I think the case could be made that Curran would be the toughest fight of Torres’ career.

No matter the case, Curran is going to have to take a fight against Chase Beebe or Manny Tapia if he wants to mix it up with Torres. Brian Bowles has more than earned the next shot at the belt.

by dropkick101 on Dec 7, 2008 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

As to the first part of that comment, this is also in line with McCully’s delusions of the tough hand he has been dealt in comparison to other fighters. Curran is yet another example, as is Kenny Florian.

by dropkick101 on Dec 7, 2008 9:02 PM EST up reply actions

Bowles has definitely earned his shot.

by Gunslinger20 on Dec 7, 2008 9:17 PM EST up reply actions

I favor Curran in that fight

His Jits is better than Torres’ and his chin is better than any Miguel has faced, (certainly of any of his recent fights.) If he gets Miguel down there is a very real chance Miguel goes to sleep.

by skwirrl on Dec 7, 2008 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

Seriously?

Dude, that’s fucking absurd. Curran has lost two straight and you’re picking him to beat Torres? I’d gladly put up hard cash on that encounter..

by Blackout612 on Dec 7, 2008 11:19 PM EST up reply actions

With respect to Curran, he lost to current champ Mike Brown and former champ Urijah Faber. Those guys are no slouches. Curran is still a world class fighter and on any given night could pull out the victory. He is a formidable opponent for Torres and should not be taken lightly.

by dropkick101 on Dec 7, 2008 11:27 PM EST up reply actions

No one is taking him lightly, I think he’s a great fighter, and I’ve seen him fight live. But he would absolutely not beat Miguel Torres. End of story. He could beat a lot of guys, but he could not beat Miguel Torres.

by Blackout612 on Dec 8, 2008 12:45 AM EST up reply actions

Mike Brown couldn’t beat Urijah Faber. Matt Serra couldn’t beat George St. Pierre on his best day. Randy Couture was too small and too old to beat the colossal Tim Sylvia. Gabriel Gonzaga had a bright future but wouldn’t be able to compete with Cro Cop. Forrest Griffin was tough as nails but Shogun was simply at a different level.

Look, I am not saying Miguel Torres wouldn’t be the favorite to win. If I’m betting money, it goes on Torres. Despite that, you can’t use definite words like “absolutely not” and “could not.” You can say you think Torres is the better fighter or you’re picking him to win. The point is that nothing is definitive in MMA until the fight is over. Anything can happen.

by dropkick101 on Dec 8, 2008 11:07 AM EST up reply actions

Dude...

That point has no validity. And stop being so deliberate. Torres wins that fight 13 of 14 times. You want a fuckin spreadsheet on variables? Geez..

by Blackout612 on Dec 8, 2008 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

That point has a ton of validity. “But he would absolutely not beat Miguel Torres. End of story. He could beat a lot of guys, but he could not beat Miguel Torres.” You’re wrong. Upsets happen all the time at this level of the sport. Torres would be the favorite but to say Curran absolutely would not be able to beat him is ridiculous. Torres is great, but he’s also human.

by dropkick101 on Dec 8, 2008 3:56 PM EST up reply actions

Oh, ok

Because I meant to imply that he is otherworldly. I pick Torres. Get over it.

Keep the overly liberal bullshit to yourself.

by Blackout612 on Dec 8, 2008 4:35 PM EST up reply actions

Overly liberal bullshit? That doesn’t even make sense here. You made a nonsense comment and I called you on it and now you’re retracting by trying to attack me. Way to go. If being “overly liberal” means taking the comments of others as what they appear to mean then I must be overly liberal. Next time I’ll try to figure out what you meant to say despite the fact that you wrote something else.

by dropkick101 on Dec 8, 2008 5:38 PM EST up reply actions

Also

Curran has faced much tougher competition in his career so I give him the experience edge by a large margin also

by skwirrl on Dec 7, 2008 10:50 PM EST reply actions

This is true but as we have seen before, experience doesn’t always win fights. There are so many factors in an MMA bout and experience is just one of many.
