Golden Boy Schedules January 24th Show for Los Angeles
Is the partnership between GBP and Affliction the worst partnership ever? Steve Cofield reports that Margarito-Mosley, which will air on January 24th opposite Affliction, will take place at Staples Center. Affliction II is on January 24th at the Honda Center in Anaheim. This essentially kills any chance for a monopoly on local press for Affliction that weekend to get a last minute push for tickets.
I have no report on ticket sales, but the 50 dollar ones were still available a few days ago. I now believe the show will be cancelled.

it just keeps getting worse and worse. i fear you may be right about the cancellation. goldenboy cant possibly say now that they are not in direct competiton with Affliction 2.

Golden Boy is only involved with Affliction for event management and presentation purposes if I recall correctly.
Bad news For Affliction. It seems every one who can do something to hinder their second event is doing so.

As long as Fedor gets to fight "the pit bull"
Then i dont care if only 340 people pay for tickets and they have to give away 8000 free tickets. I believe that AA has a real chance if he can keep it on the feet. I will NOT be buying the card, but i will be watching it LIVE…….Gotta love the internet and the geeks who can make just about anything possible when it comes to pirating and computers

If they advertise for both events in what would normally be one ad slot in papers etc….

PPV is one thing. But the high-end tickets would be bought by VIPs. VIPs don’t discriminate between sports nearly as much.
If a celebrity has to choose between a night at at Affliction, and a night out at Margarito/Mosley, which would they pick?

Speechless
I really really wanted another MMA competitor to stand up against UFC. I do like the UFC but if they know that they have a monopoly on major league MMA they can pull so many d*ck moves and say “If you dont like us go somewhere else, OH wait there aren’t any other places”.
Affliction you are a poorly run and poorly managed company.
You overpaid fighters when you didn’t need too (Sylvia 800k, Rothwell 250k, etc.)
You hired a pregnant-baby hitting & elderly scammer as one of your top mgmt. positions.
You haven’t the faintest idea how to properly market ,promote , and expand a product (Are you a t-shirt company or MMA? There is a market cap on D-bag Skull T-shirts you know.)
And finally you enter into a partnership with a company who not only DOESNT HELP but stabs you in the back by putting on another fight on the SAME DATE in the SAME CITY.
I am speechless. Hopefully another promotion will take your place that grasps simple business concepts. (Profit=Revenue-Expenses)
RIP Affliction MMA

Hmm, its looking that way
They didnt really do themselves any favours with the amounts they paid the fighters.. which, for a start up promotion, were literally idiotic, there’s no other way to describe it..

It should be noted that they didn’t hire the pregnant woman hitting scam artist he was one of the founders of the company. You could put off hiring the guy as poor judgement but Affliction was Beard’s and Atencio’s idea from the very start.

GBP did research
into how big the crossover market for MMA and boxing is. When they were talking about putting boxing and MMA on the same card everybody was bitching saying they would never buy a card with both on it. But now that they are on seperate cards they are somehow competitors?
by skwirrl on Dec 7, 2008 3:57 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Yes. Yes. Yes.
The idea is to maximize PPV buys for BOTH cards, if the partnership is worth a shit. That aim is not served by having both fights on the same night in the same city.
Affliction is dead, Golden Boy does not give a shit about MMA, and ProElite ain’t coming back. Yey.

Not to be nit picky, but dual-tuner PVR’s aren’t nearly as common as you think. I can’t even get one yet in my parts. Hell, PVR’s aren’t nearly as common as people seem to think period. Google American household PVR numbers, you’ll probably be surprised. Maybe there’s some really recent reports on usage for it that shows that they’re more common, I don’t know.

No, you’re right. I’m lying to you to force my point or am somehow incompetent and don’t understand how to use my PVR. By the way, check out those numbers yet? I’ll save you googling it because you’re choosing to ignore it, but it’s estimated 33.8% of American households will have DVR’s by the end of 2008. It’s up a lot from a couple years ago, but still, people overstate DVR use A LOT when talking about “oh, I’ll just DVR x and watch y”. Sorry I picked on you about it :(
by LiuLang on Dec 7, 2008 4:24 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
So
100 Million Americans have access to DVR’s? Wow those numbers are tiny. Out of the 85-90% of American households that have cable or satellite I would guess that AT LEAST 50% have access to DVR. I get mine through Time Warner cable. I didn’t go out and buy a TIVO – I pay for premium cable and said hey you wanna charge me an additional 9 bucks a month for a DVR – go for it. It sucks that in your area you can’t get it, but if 33% of Americans already have them and a good deal more don’t pay for the service, I would say plenty of people have access to them.
by skwirrl on Dec 7, 2008 10:28 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The simple fact is, is that not everyone has them. People like you always respond to these situations of competition and say I will watch x and tape y, so everything will be peachy and they’ll have hundreds of thousands of buys. That’s simply not the reality despite what you would say.

by Tonley on Dec 7, 2008 10:44 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It’s only partially about that.
1. I question their research, because there isn’t a ton of crossover, but there definitely is some. Just look at how many people are talking about last night’s boxing match on this site. The hardcore fan is not the one that makes an mma promotion or show successful. To make money, they need to draw the casual sports fan, that’s why the UFC is successful. Now the casual sports fan in LA has 2 choices for that night, and they’re probably going to shift towards boxing, since they know what that is.
2. The other thing is that Golden Boy now has to split their attention. Now they have to work on advertising/producing/whatever the hell they’re supposed to be doing for Affliction for 2 shows in the same area at the same exact time. They’re obviously going to focus more on their boxing match than the MMA card. It’s obvious from the production/advertising/results from the first card (and the canceled 2nd card) that Affliction needs all the help they’re going to get, and now they aren’t going to be getting as much help as they would have if the boxing match was on a different day, or even in Vegas on the same day.
ESPN is definitely going to cover the boxing match over MMA, area newspapers that don’t have full time MMA and boxing writers (which isn’t a lot) is going to go with boxing. Sports columnists that usually don’t give a shit about boxing or MMA will now either ignore both or focus on the boxing match.

Most MMA fans
only care a little even about the Megafights – Was there any talk on this site about Margarito vs Cotto which has 10X the hype that this Margarito card has? No not really. MMA fans don’t give a damn about Margarito vs Mosley, even boxing fans wouldn’t care enough to watch it on PPV. I’ll DVR it on HBO HD and buy, watch, (and also DVR), the Affliction Event
by skwirrl on Dec 7, 2008 3:22 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That’s you. You do not represent the majority of casual fans, which is what Affliction needs to make money.
That also isn’t going to help them at all in regards to advertising, hype, and media presence before the event. All of these things are going to be effected by the boxing match in the same area on the same day. All of those things are going to hurt the bottom line.
by Phildo on Dec 7, 2008 4:31 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
You’re wrong…
The casual MMA fan (also known as UFC fans) don’t care about boxing.
The numbers are very different when you look at the hardcore MMA fanbase.
The hardcore mma fan is way more likely to be a boxing fan. .. actually the hardcore mma fan is 7 times more likely to also be a boxing fan.
if one out of 20 casuals is a boxing fan… 7 out of 20 hardcores are boxing fans.
Now there are alot less hardcores so even though it won’t seem to be a huge hit on the ppv numbers there will be an effect…
If the ceiling is 100k buys and you lose 20k buys that’s a 25% hit. Even though 20k is not a big number – in relation it is.
There will be a 10% to 25% hit on the ppv numbers directly related to this boxing fight.
But the biggest effect this boxing card will have will be on the gate which is where half or more of afflictions total revenues are generated.
35% to 50% of their potential gate is now gone.
by mmalogic on Dec 7, 2008 5:00 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
I find that hard to believe
because I would be described more than likely as a hardcore – I “borrow” the Sengoku broadcasts live from Japan, watch every DREAM, Strikeforce, WEC and sometimes watch the GFC’s or SportFights of the world and I came up as a boxing and kickboxing fan. I’m still a boxing/kickboxing fan first and foremost so I love boxing/kickboxing. But I see more Hardcore MMA fans that came up from pro wrestling and DESPISE boxing and tolerate kickboxing.

Margarito is awesome, unfortunately I doubt he will ever become the type of draw that ODH is/was, at least in the US.
I’m sure there are tons of reasons, but I just don’t see boxing having the appeal to younger generations that it once did, either as participants or viewers. I would say last night was about as big an event as we will see in boxing anytime soon and where I watched it, my friend’s nephew and a couple of his buddies were there. They had just finished with a wrestling tourney and were ready to watch the fight. These guys are around 16, so they are in the demographic I am talking about and are into combat sports, obviously. Let me tell you, I have never seen 4 guys less interested in what was going on in the ring. Just an observation that I picked up on.

Antonio Margarito = absolutely IRON jaw, (the best above or below his weight class going as high as 160-168 lbs), incredible stamina, (he holds the record for most punches thrown in a fight at something like 1600), Good power but its magnified when he just unrelentingly beats on you with over 100 punches per round, and his boxing skills are underestimated as well – he could be a decent counterpuncher if he ever lost half his stamina.
by skwirrl on Dec 7, 2008 3:31 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Margarito’s promoter, Bob Arum, said the fight was moved because MGM/Mirage only agreed to buy $200,000 in tickets, when Arum and Golden Boy Promotions had assumed the company would purchase up to $500,000 in tickets.
“It’s the week before the Super Bowl and the end of the Chinese New Year; the market was very smooth,” Arum said. “We knew Staples was available, and we made a deal figuring we might as well take the fight to where these fighters’ fans are. Mosley’s from Los Angeles, and Margarito (who trains in the San Gabriel Valley and lives in Tijuana] basically is too. It’s an L.A. fight.”

This may have as much to do with when HBO and others agreed to purchase this fight for, as anything.

I doubt that
Sacramento has always been a boxing town – now it gets just a blurb or two in the paper unless there is a huge fight. MMA will recieve just as much coverage as boxing even though its So*Cal (perhaps even to a bigger extent down there). Even though Boxing still has very deep roots in California, MMA has come on strong.
