Lorenzo Fertitta Talks to The Atlantic

DS: And your business model here is what?
LF: We call it the wheel. The UFC wheel. You’ve got your core— the pay per view. That’s essentially your product, right? And then, you know, you have spinoff things. You can sell it on DVD. Then after you sell it on DVD, you repurpose it and sell it too, put it in syndication on UFC Wired, or on Spike TV. Then you have products that you then put on the internet through VOD and other VOD platforms. Then you have other licensing opportunities like apparel and merchandise and video games, and all the way down. So it’s a complex business.
DS: Your fighters are getting paid less than boxers.
LF: Because it’s a different business model. In boxing, what happens is, the boxing promoter comes in, he doesn’t risk any capital. HBO comes in and does all the production. And does all the marketing. And they’re also carrying all the overhead. They got all the staff and everything. It shouldn’t be and it can’t be an apples and apples comparison. Now, do we make money? Absolutely we make money. But it’s not as simple as saying that boxers get paid 50% and we pay out 5-8%. That’s not correct. The guys that are complaining about their pay are making millions. I think Dana even put out there that—in '07, or '06, when Tito Ortiz fought three times, he made like 6 million dollars. Okay? And he’s the biggest guy saying I want to make more money.
And one thing that nobody could ever say about me or Frank or Dana is nobody’s check ever bounced, and we never went to anybody and said look, you know what, we can’t afford to pay you as much as we said . Everybody always got paid for the deal they were contracted for. And I will say this. We are the only promoters in the history of combat sport, that actually have paid fighters more than they’re contracted for.
An excellent read, check it out.

Great answer to the payout question. Also could’ve said, ‘we don’t fix fights, either.’

I read that yesterday. One of the most interesting and important MMA interviews I’ve ever read. If you haven’t checked it out yet, do it now.

The 5-8% thing is also completely wrong, as people have pointed out over and over. How can anyone guess this stuff when it turns out Fitch got a 110k bonus for the St. Pierre fight that would never be included in those calculations? These bonuses happen all the time, which is why threads moaning about Jardine making 7k to fight Liddell are so ridiculous.
The real percentage is probably closer to 15%, which is not huge, but UFC also has a lot of costs boxing promoters don’t.

I love how people complain on Jardine’s behalf…yet he is absolutely fine with it.

I never understanding the bitching and moaning about UFC fighter pay.
We have no idea what the UFC really takes in, we have no idea what they really pay out, yet half the internet thinks they are experts on how much people should be getting paid.

Notice it is mainly people bitching about UFC pay…not anything else. No one seems to care about people getting less money anywhere else.
Also it is rather funny that most of the people bitching about pay on messageboards are probably wasting time at work while they get paid doing it. Like me.

People are conditioned to seeing athletes get paid millions of dollars. Nobody is ever entitled to that kind of money. I refuse to contribute to any other sports other than MMA. I’m tired of spoiled rich athletes.
And ex-nay on the “wasting time” thing. We’re analyzing the market condition by researching trends on the Internet for our new potentially blockbuster product. Remember that!

Call me pissed cause I just got a termination letter due to lack of funds for my contract. The new political climate is not a good one for defense contractors, so I lose my job.
Yes I am rather bitter.

I feel your pain. I think people who bitch about pay needs to take a step back and look at the economic climate. Mid tier fighters are getting paid far more than engineers and 90% of all white collar workers. Frankly, if they weren’t fighters, I doubt they could get a job that pays them even one third of what they are paid now.

Yuck, iiowyn.
I’m sorry to hear that. Yours is the one sector of our government which shouldn’t see cutbacks (in my opinion) yet is probably the most volatile of all.
Wishing you good luck sounds trite and all, but seriously: good luck. The world didn’t all of a sudden get safer because of a political shift, and it won’t take too long for reality to catch up. Hang in there.

Fertitta Enterprises AND STATION CASINOS IN TROUBLE
The Fertittas might have to start relying on the UFC to save them.
