Dana LOVES Junie. Why? I have never been impressed with him in the cage or certainly out of it.

by lbk on Dec 4, 2008 9:29 AM EST reply actions

He’s got charisma and people want to see him lose.

by Brett Jones on Dec 4, 2008 9:30 AM EST up reply actions

Junie reminds Dana of himself when he was younger.

So who’s going to play the role of Frank Shamrock and teach Junie the importance of cardio?

I hope Krzystofqkleqwe is healthy again. That dude is a beast.

by Derek Suboticki on Dec 4, 2008 9:29 AM EST reply actions

Yeah

I wanted to see him and Bader go at it. Dude looks like a real life villain from a movie. LMAO!

by xFenixKnightx on Dec 4, 2008 9:45 AM EST up reply actions

Did no one watch him in the IFL?

by Luke Thomas on Dec 4, 2008 9:50 AM EST up reply actions

Or even post IFL. His fight with an old Alex Andrade was beyond horrible.

by D.Capitated on Dec 4, 2008 9:58 AM EST up reply actions

He, The Janitor and Horodecki are the only three from that league that I really, really wanted to see in the UFC.

And Big Country Fried Steak, of course.

by Derek Suboticki on Dec 4, 2008 9:59 AM EST up reply actions

I was never impressed with him in the IFL. I do think that he came across very well on TUF though. Def seems like a good guy to have around as a gatekeeper type.

by lbk on Dec 4, 2008 10:12 AM EST up reply actions

Obviously. Hence IFL no longer exists.

No, I mean, I knew he was in IFL, and I watched the IFL, but I never saw Kryzstof fight.

I’m trying to remember back to grade school. Is it “S before Z except after Y?”

Unfortunately...

yes.

Not to be mean…but I don’t see him being able to hack it even as a gatekeeper in the UFC. But we’ll be watching him for a while I figure.

OK...

I am the worst fight prognosticator on the planet!

I picked Eliot and Krystof as well as ripping on Vinny a bit. So who wants to go to Vegas with me, lol??

Just had to eat some crow here for my completely inaccurate predictions.

I hate the style that Bader used to win, BUT he did win. That was an awesome armbar by Vinny. I just have no idea how this is going to play out. And damn, Vinny looked huge in there!

Congrats to all the finalists.

Evans and Koscheck won like this as well. Look how they turned out. I’m all for Bader winning any way he can even if he has to lay and pray.

by cyph on Dec 4, 2008 10:29 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, even though Vinny is a BJJ guy, I just have a hard time rooting for him.

Bader is someone I was aware of heading into the house and my bias aside, he is who I expected to win. I honestly just expected more gnp from him, but he did a good job of holding Eliot down and not letting him get into position to sweep or finish.

Excellent points about Kos and Evans.

What’s up with Eliot’s take down defense?

What take down defense, lol?

Seriously, Eliot never wrestled, not even in high school and was facing a top notch wrestler who is strong and explosive. I think if you combine those two things, you see what we saw last night. I think we also saw an edge with Nog’s coaching and the way his team trained throughout the show. Not that Mir’s was bad, just that Nog really put everything into it.

I think this may be an excellent final four LHWs and I hope the best for all of them. Also, I truly believe that we will get to see the 2 best LWs in the house in the finale, should be a great fight there!

I think the other best lightweight was Duarte. I have a feeling Phillipe is going to run over Efrain.

by cyph on Dec 4, 2008 10:49 AM EST up reply actions

God i freaking hope so…Efrain’s little smirk is the most annoying thing since CB’s lip. Plus I really like Phillipe.

Bader beating Eliot was lay and pray at it’s finest, very very annoying to watch, especially after seeing some of the WEC fights earlier tonight. I don’t mind Bader winning, I actually kinda like the guy…but I gotta call ’em as I see ’em.

Junie…well I like the guy, but last night was so freaking pitiful. Here is to hoping we will see what he can do on the final, training at Xtreme Couture makes me a little hopeful.

by iiowyn on Dec 4, 2008 11:36 AM EST up reply actions

I was really disappointed as well with Bader and Eliot for that matter. I would have rather seen Bader fight Vinny and Eliot fight K-Sos.

Thats a huge knock against the haphazard way the UFC does their matchups for getting into the house. They need to make at least SOME attempt to seed them, and I don’t think they do.

by Michaelthebox on Dec 4, 2008 12:20 PM EST up reply actions

Dana thought the guy who fainted was the weakest fighter and set him up for the fall against the supposedly best fighter. How wrong he was.

I was really rooting for Eliot – he pissed me off though, I thought for sure he was going to submit Bader.

You know I’m far from an expert, but it just seemed like Eliot stuck with the closed guard to much. Everything I have learned is that closed guard is a terrible place to stay in mma. He kept Bader from doing much, but also limited himself for sweeps/finishes.

I think Dana hit it on the head, when he said Eliot should have given his back or something, just to change the direction of the fight. Bader has limited sub game, especially compared to Eliot, so it wouldn’t have been as dangerous a move. Of course in BJJ, you are told repeatedly to never give the back, so I’m sure that is something that is hard to go against.

http://eliotmarshall.com/

by BJJDenver on Dec 4, 2008 10:44 AM EST up reply actions

Yea, the rear naked is just such a powerless position. It really sucks to get choked out. It’s totally against a fighter’s instincts to give up their back.

by Day Man on Dec 4, 2008 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

Man, I was just yelling at the TV (I don’t think he heard me, lol) to give up position, take a chance, something just to change the stuck ti the mat clock running out position. Of course, it is obvious by Eliot’s reaction afterward that he didn’t realize how much Bader was holding him down.

Someone should’ve told Vinny this I guess.

by Zack Gobie on Dec 4, 2008 10:49 AM EST reply actions

Vinny didn’t stay in closed guard, thus the point I was trying to make.

http://eliotmarshall.com/

by BJJDenver on Dec 4, 2008 10:55 AM EST up reply actions

And closed guard isn’t necessarily bad at all.

by Luke Thomas on Dec 4, 2008 10:57 AM EST up reply actions

Of course, depending on the fighter skill set, opponent, etc… But if you have someone like Bader on top of you, I would say that keeping the guard closed and attempting things like a Kimura, is probably not the best idea.

I know people will complain about Lay n pray to an extent, but staying in closed guard isn’t much more exciting, imo. Of course, when someone like Eliot locks down someone like Bader, who isn’t working to improve position or being very active with the gnp, I would say it is the refs responsibility to get them back up. Then there is the argument about how much a take down should count for, when the fighter does nothing with it.

Don’t get me wrong, I make no excuses for Eliot, but I do see ways this fight could have been much different, as far as the action is concerned.

http://eliotmarshall.com/

by BJJDenver on Dec 4, 2008 11:03 AM EST up reply actions

I think you hit it right, the ref really should have stood them up earlier. It was extremely obvious absolutely nothing was gonna happen on the ground. I like both Eliot and Bader, and to see the fight go that way was doubly frustrating.

by iiowyn on Dec 4, 2008 11:39 AM EST up reply actions

Vinny will sub Bader.

Vinny has never impressed me. His standup is so clumsy. He just looks like he needs like 5 fights in smaller orgs before he fights for UFC. He will get crushed in the 205 division.

This is the first TUF finale I can remember where there are only 2 fights that involve fighters not on the show.

by Scott Haber on Dec 4, 2008 11:17 AM EST reply actions

And the first main event with TUF fighters!

by cyph on Dec 4, 2008 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

Don’t get me wrong, i think Philepe is very good, but i think it is just to soon for Dana to be calling him the next Anderson Silva. I guarantee if he fought someone like Gray Maynard, he would not have a chance, and Gray is about as new to the MMA game as he is.

by littlenicky2355 on Dec 4, 2008 11:45 AM EST reply actions

Gray is an extremely good fighter, but he’s also 29 years old. Give Phillipe a couple more years to evolve his skills, we’re going to see some amazing things.

by Michaelthebox on Dec 4, 2008 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

I think you are underestimating Nover. He cuts down from 185. Phillipe originally tried out for TUF 7 as a middleweight.

Then again…Florian almost won at middleweight.

I know, different times, but still…

Frank Mir

Dissed Junie BAD (which he deserved) at the end of the show. That actually made me like Mir a little more since I really wasn’t too big on him for the most part.

does anyone else think Junie just sucked because he was in the house, and will fight totally different at the Finale?

My Brother and I have a disagreement on the matter and I for one think he should take his own advice after the Finale and start flippin burgers!

I’m with you! Hold the pickles Junie!

It will be interesting to see how training at Extreme Couture has helped him, if at all.

Thoughts about the actual fights...

-LW final is a great match.
-I hope Johnson pokes Burns in the eye! Seriously, nice job putting this on and setting the records straight.
-Junie/Kaplan, the UFC is obviously looking for a high energy all out war here.
-Krystof/ Primm & Eliot/Jules, I think they are setting up Krystof and Eliot with very winnable fights, thus giving them the opportunity to continue in the UFC rather than be one and done.
-The remaining three fights are probably loser is out of the UFC, and in some instances, even the winners may be destined for other venues.
-glad to see these guys getting their shot to make a spot for themselves in the UFC.

From what I’ve heard, Nelson is pretty good.

I hope Johnson and Burns have a damn good fight. Nobody wanted it ended the way the first did, and this time Burns’ hand is healed.

Actually a question on that, I have seen a hell of a lot of pawing jabs in fights after starting to look for them…and yet there are so few eye contacts. Is there something the person on the receiving end of those jabs does to limit the chance of an eye injury?

by iiowyn on Dec 4, 2008 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I know Nelson is one of BJ’s guys and expectations were pretty high for him entering TUF, but I think he got a little distracted. He seems like a decent guy, so I hope he can get it going again.

I think those not-quite-close fist-jabs have a lot to do with the grappling/take down aspects of mma, but Burns said he hurt his hand and can’t make a fist, which sucks on a lot of levels. I don’t really think there is anything the defending fighter can do, except avoid the jabs??

http://eliotmarshall.com/

by BJJDenver on Dec 4, 2008 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

I’m just going on a memory of the fight, and not really noticing anything out of the ordinary about Burns’ striking other than he was palm hitting Johnson’s ear face on the ground. So i was curious if Johnson might not have been safe enough, which is apparently wrong, and asking it back then would have gotten me crucified. I really liked both guys, and seeing it end like that really sucked, then reading all the shit Burns’ got online added to my frustration.

I just hope those guys have a damn good fight with no controversy this time.

And I hope Junie truly has gotten his shit together and shows more of his potential. Don’t really know why I like him…I hate trash talking with a vengeance and he does entirely too much of it. But for some reason I do.

by iiowyn on Dec 4, 2008 3:22 PM EST up reply actions
