2008: The Year the MMA World Turned Upside Down

Here are my random thoughts for 2008.

Alistair_medium

1. All we hold dear and sacred should be thrown out the window. Iron chin is now glass chin. Undefeated is now defeated. K-1 caliber striker is now MMA caliber. The two most iron-chinned fighters in MMA, Mark Hunt and Nogueira were both knocked out for the first time in their lives. All three K-1 fighters were beaten at their own game by MMA fighters. Who would have thunk it?

2. It's a sport so don't force things. One, you don't force stars on the public. Two, you don't make matches that you're not sure you have contingency plans for. Exhibit A: Kimbo Slice. Exhibit B: K-1 and EliteXC. If you're going to put your fighters on display and prove how good they are, you better be sure they win. If not, make sure the other fighters are (1) locked up contractually and (2) marketable. Otherwise, you just make your organization look stupid and amateurish, or worse, bankrupt. As for K-1, they just hurt their credibility to have their own fighters beaten at their own game. When one fighter loses, it's a fluke. When both lose, it's a trend. K-1 level striking isn't what it used to be.

3. Freakshow. Bob Sapp VS Cartoon character? What? The Japanese have not evolved much past the good old days of Pride. At this rate, don't be surprised if Zuffa invades Japan in 2009.

4. My fighter of the year? No, it's not Anderson Silva nor is it Brock Lesnar. The fighter of the year has been undefeated in 2008, won the Strikeforce heavyweight belt, demolished Mirko CroCop in a no-contest match that he otherwise would have won anyway, and then destroyed Badr Hari, a K-1 heavyweight champion in a K-1 rules match. He's none other than Alistair Overeem. Overeem has always had the physical talent but has never dedicated himself before, gassing out early and has shown no heart in tough fights. The new demolition man is living up to his namesake by demolishing everyone in his wake. Zuffa, sign this man!

5. This last one is a rant. Why is it that reputable MMA sites pride themselves on objectivity on news reporting but when it comes to ranking, they throw that objectivity right out the window? Ranking should be as objective as possible even if it's highly subjective. Fighters who beat ranked fighters should be moved up. Fighters who beat unranked fighters should not be moved up. Fighters who lose to ranked fighters should not have their stock hurt unless the fighter they lost to is below them. Josh Barnett is a guy who moved up in ranking because the guy above him lost to another ranked fighter. This is a guy who hasn't fought a ranked fighter in two years. The last fighter he lost to (Nogueira) is now ranked below him because that fighter has fought consistently top competition. Does this make sense? This type of ranking encourage fighters to duck top competition. This is just Sherdog's ranking which I think is very respectible and objective. I hestitate to even discuss MMAWeekly's ranking because it is so fanboyish that it shouldn't even be mentioned. CroCop is still ranked #9, above Brock Lesnar of all people, while Randy Couture is ranked 4 slots above him. Overeem is no where to be found on the list while Barnett is ranked #2. I rest my case.

Other names for Fighter of the Year are Gegard Mousasi and Thiago Alves

by Nick Thomas on Dec 31, 2008 1:40 PM EST reply actions

Agreed

Mousasi could very well could sell a middleweight fight with Anderson Silva. He could be the heir apparent if he keeps it up and AS retires. In light of Mousasi’s ascendance , I think Melvin should reconsider MMA. He could be a terror in MMA if he trains with a good camp that could round out his game. I think the time of sloppy MMA striking is nearly over.

Torres is definitely on the radar. He is defitinetly on Frank Mir’s best of 2008 list. Seriously, can Mir be any less objective regarding Torres. I have heard Mir say that, “Torres’s training borders on mythology” and “If you had to pick a guy who would survive in the jungle with only a knife I would pick Miguel Torres.”

Cool retrospective on 2008, cyph.

by Cannon Jacques on Dec 31, 2008 1:55 PM EST reply actions

Maybe not number one, but definitely toss GSP’s name into the hat. He finished the one guy whose stopped him in the past four years in Matt Serra and dominated the consensus number two fighter in the world. Plus, his stoppage of Hughes was practically 2008.

I think Overeem is one of the biggest “breakthrough” fighters or “comeback” or what have you. Considering his domination of Hari is his biggest accomplishment of the year (and a huge one at that), I still don’t think you can say he was fighter of the year. Hunt has lost four MMA fights in a row, Goodridge has been washed up for YEARS, Hyun Lee isn’t really an MMA fighter, and all Overeem did to Cro Cop was knee him in the balls.

by dropkick101 on Dec 31, 2008 2:26 PM EST reply actions

The problem with GSP is that he fought only twice in 2008 and one of his fights was against a fighter he lost to previously. Two fights isn’t to say much. Overeem fought 5 times and he destroyed everyone in the first round. Badr Hari, Mark Hunt, and CroCop are far more impressive fighters than Matt Serra or even Fitch.

by cyph on Dec 31, 2008 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

Hari, maybe. Hunt and CroCop more impressive than Fitch? Not so much.

How about 'Pro Wrestler Beats Randy Couture?'

I’m a Lesnar fan, but that is fucking crazy in one year, even to me.

by Derek Suboticki on Dec 31, 2008 2:48 PM EST reply actions

I agree...

Overeem belongs in the UFC. No doubt about it. It means nothing when I say it but I will say it anyway, Don’t forget the Undefeated LHW Champion in our midst. Sugar Rashad Evans is probably not the best fighter of the year but worth mentioning at least.

Nice work once again cyph!

Let’s see…

1-Yep. This is definitely turning into expect the unexpected.
2-Yep. For every Lesner story, there are many rushed or over matched names that ultimately fail
3-Yep. And I have said many times they should use WEC as their “Trojan Horse”.
4-Yep. Great year for AO, he definitely deserves some recognition. unfortunately there were just a lot of fighters deserving of the honor.
5-Yep. Freakin’ damn straight. Read my reply below!

Eliot Marshall: Bader won. Like I said in the episode, I'm not going to make any excuses. It's my job to be able to deal with when somebody's doing that. It's not his job to change up his tactics.

THE RANKINGS...

Now let me say, I put very little stock in any rankings. They are just to slanted, imo. At MMAWeekly, they should be ashamed, Robbie Lawler the #2 MW in the world??? Give me a damn break! Is that really what they think of us fans? That we would see that and give them any respect? Marquardt #6, henderson #7 and Mousassi #8, but Lawler is #2??? Sure he is a top 10 in that division, but please, give me a break.

As for the HWs…

  1. Heavyweight Fighter in the World: Fedor Emelianenko
    2. Josh Barnett
    3. Frank Mir
    4. Andrei Arlovski
    5. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
    6. Randy Couture
    7. Tim Sylvia
    8. Gabriel Gonzaga
    9. Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic
    10. Brock Lesnar

I am no Lesner fan, but he should be somewhere around 5. CCshould not even be on this list and ABSOLUTELY, where is Overeem?? Mir jumps from 10-12 to 3 by beating Nog, but Lesner doesn’t get the same respect by beating Couture, who in retrospect was probably the more dangerous fighter between him and Nog, at least on those nights. Not only do these rankings lack sense, but they lack COMMON sense. Damn, if you are going to do a joke of a job, then don’t even bother. Thank God for Meta-rankings, they are the only thing that even remotely gives us some idea what is up.

Now I know these rankings are greatly for discussion and so on, but this is just pathetic, imo.

Eliot Marshall: Bader won. Like I said in the episode, I'm not going to make any excuses. It's my job to be able to deal with when somebody's doing that. It's not his job to change up his tactics.

Your Barnett ranking is just a joke

That man doesn’t even belong in the Top 15.

by klown on Dec 31, 2008 10:01 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think that’s his ranking. It’s MMAWeekly’s ranking which is absurdity at it’s best.

by cyph on Jan 1, 2009 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

exactly

Sorry, should have labeled it as such.

Eliot Marshall: Bader won. Like I said in the episode, I'm not going to make any excuses. It's my job to be able to deal with when somebody's doing that. It's not his job to change up his tactics.

lol is this a joke? Barnett is clearly top 10 at worst.

by smoogy on Jan 1, 2009 6:10 PM EST up reply actions

We don’t agree on much, but I’ll give you that. I cannot name 10 HW that are better than Josh Barnett today. Next year, I may feel differently.

by Derek Suboticki on Jan 2, 2009 2:41 AM EST up reply actions

You mean Barnett that smashed Randy in his prime?

Yeah definately not top 15. Unless he’s in the UFC

by skwirrl on Jan 1, 2009 11:08 PM EST up reply actions

To be honest it seems Randy’s prime was after that. Of course a fight in 2002 shouldn’t have a ton of affect on 2008 rankings anyway but the utter lack of top ten competition in the last two years should. Rankings are definatly about “what have you done lately” and Josh Barnett hasn’t fought anyone since he lost to Nog in 2006 that would justify his ranking. I’m not bagging on the guy, I think he is damn good but he just hasn’t done much of anything to justify that ranking in years.

by who me on Jan 2, 2009 12:59 AM EST up reply actions

Considering Josh dominated Monson

That would force him to be at least top 15 considering his past performance. Knocked out Pedro Rizzo and Subbed Yoshida since the Nog fight he would have to be at least top 10

Gimme 1 Round!

by skwirrl on Jan 2, 2009 4:02 AM EST up reply actions

Plus the old wins over

Alex E, Nog before he was completely shot, and Randy Couture makes plants him firmly in the top 10. Especially considering his only losses are to Nog, Rizzo when he was damn good and Mirko who just has his number and was on top of his game at the time.

Gimme 1 Round!

by skwirrl on Jan 2, 2009 4:06 AM EST up reply actions

The last time he fought one of those guys was when people still had Cro Cop as the second best heavyweight in the world. Yes those are some big wins but they are comparibly ancient history in MMA terms, not to mention that his last two fights against top ten talent were both losses (Nog and Cro Cop). People aren’t arguing that he shouldn’t be on the rankings(well most people aren’t) but how can you justify second best heavyweight in the world based on that?

by who me on Jan 2, 2009 5:28 AM EST up reply actions

Top 15 definatly, top ten I personally agree but the ranking they were griping about had him at number 2 in the world. Hard to put him as the second best heavyweight in the world (or even top five for that matter) based on beating Yoshida, Monson and Rizzo as his only fights in the last two years. Heck Barnett has been going up in the rankings and that’s just hard to justify off those fights and especially since he hasn’t even fought at all in the last 6 months.

by who me on Jan 2, 2009 5:17 AM EST up reply actions

Wit this logic, Chuck Liddell should still be ranked #2 because he smashed Randy Couture in 2006. It’s a real shame Chuck’s been fighting top competition since then.

by cyph on Jan 2, 2009 2:23 AM EST up reply actions

Thiago alves is my fighter of the year. Lytle, Parisan, Hughs, and Koscheck in the past 14 months.

It seems to me that a lot of the guys doing the rankings need to get off the nuts of non UFC fighters. I have seen Jake Sheilds above Alves in many polls. Why? Sheilds has not fought the same caliber in the last year.

by nk on Dec 31, 2008 6:34 PM EST reply actions

Impressive

But its Mousasi. Both Jacare and Manhoef are more dangerous than any of those 4

by skwirrl on Jan 1, 2009 11:10 PM EST up reply actions

Fighter of the year could be Florian. 3-0 against top competition as well as pushing himself into most top 10 LW lists, which is rare for a UFC fighter. Other than that I think it really belongs to Alves.

by EazyEismydad on Dec 31, 2008 8:29 PM EST reply actions

And he got his own show on ESPN.com

by who me on Dec 31, 2008 8:59 PM EST up reply actions

i'm with you on the rankings

Rankings are about who has beaten whom, not who “would” beat whoever else based on subjective opinion, hypotheticals and speculation.
