Corey Hill Speaks About Gruesome Injury, Recovery, and Hopeful Return to the Octagon

Corey-hill_medium

Promoted from the FanPosts to the front page by Cannon Jacques.

In an article over at Sherdog.com, Corey Hill talks about the fight at UFC Fight For The Troops, the gruesome leg snapping, and his future in the sport.

His take on what happened:

“My corner and I felt I’d won the first round,” said Hill of his brief clash with Hartt. “There’s a certain amount of things that have to line up to be perfect. Everything was lined up. I threw a kick. He checked it.”

...

“The minute I landed it, it was like my body was going off that something was wrong. I immediately extended my arms like, ‘My leg, my leg, my leg! No!’" he said. “I knew something was wrong. When I tried to plant it and it wasn’t there, I knew something was wrong.”

On why he didn't tap out, and instead tried to get a kimura:

“It was funny, ‘cause it was there,” laughed Hill. “Looking at my ankle, I knew something was wrong… but I’m like, ‘Yo, can I get him with the Kimura?’ Obviously I couldn’t finish it. I was in too much pain, I was just probably protecting myself.”

...

“I remember lifting my head up and I looked at it and I saw the bottom of my foot. I’d never seen the bottom of my foot before,” said Hill.

What does he have to say to people who think he is too skinny to fight?

“I’ve always been a thin guy with not a lot of body fat,” said Hill. "I walk around on normal days at 166 [pounds]. When I train, I’m in the low 60s, so it makes sense to cut a few pounds rather than fight these guys that are 185-200 pounds cutting down to 170. If they think this guy’s too skinny, that’s their opinion. I have people on the other side that say that my body type’s the perfect frame to win a world title.”

...

“Kick something as hard as you can,” he said. “I don’t think it matters if you’re a big guy or a small guy, you kick something as hard as you can and it runs into science. Action and reaction. For it to snap -- the perfect check, the perfect knee. If you noticed in the first round, I landed some killer leg kicks. That’s why he checked. This is why this happened.”

But he fully intends to fight again, and he aims for the top:

“People are like, ‘Wow, you want to rush back into that after your injury?’ People that aren’t in love with things don’t know how hard it is to walk away from them,” said Hill.

...

“I started this to win a belt,” he said. “It’s a little confusing when things like this happen as far as a mental setback, but physically, if my body is willing, I’m going to get back out there. I’m looking forward to making big news with the comeback.”

Power to ya, Corey. But it wouldn't hurt for you to put a little meat on them bones.

Some other interesting bits from the article:

* The emergency crew couldn't give Hill painkillers, because the IV kept popping out of his thin arms.

* Lorenzo Fertitta and Dana White called Hill at the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center to wish him a speedy recovery.

* The UFC paid for his medical treatment, and even left an employee with him for six days in the hospital.

The kimura-vs.-tap stuff is priceless:

"It was funny, ‘cause it was there," laughed Hill. "Looking at my ankle, I knew something was wrong… but I’m like, ‘Yo, can I get him with the Kimura?’ Obviously I couldn’t finish it. I was in too much pain, I was just probably protecting myself."

This doesn’t make sense.

If the IV is coming out of his arm, it’s because (i) it’s not secured properly in the first place, (ii) he’s flailing his arms around, and they’re not secured properly. I was a paramedic for 10 years. I started IVs on drug addicts, cancer patients, dead people, small children, day old infants. People who’ve had serious hemorrhage, or are morbidly obese, etc. etc.

The guy’s skinny, but (like almost all fighters) he’s got prominent veins. Getting the IV in should be no problem, even if he’s a little shocky. Securing it shouldn’t be a problem, even if he’s a little sweaty. Even with a significant fracture, keeping his arm still shouldn’t be an issue, nor should securing the IV. Besides, there’s other options for controlling the pain that don’t require an IV. Admittedly not as quick / effective, but stil better than nothing.

I know that feeling

While studying ancient thai massage in Thailand I went for a motor scooter ride. I got run off the road at about 45mph. My front tire sunk into some mud on the shoulder and the scooter threw me back onto the highway. My right forearm and shoulder took most of the impact but I remember seeing my foot smash the pavement in front of my face. I remeber thinking “I am not that flexible!”

I had a similar thing happen...

I was playing in a baseball game in high school as a catcher. A ball got past me and I turned to go get it and as I ran I slipped on the high, wet grass and as I fell back onto my shoulder all of a sudden my knee was hitting me right behind the ear and thinking “oh shit, that was my knee.” Long story short I ripped my hamstring in half…but yeah, its that moment of “holy shit!” when you realize something is wrong before the pain really sets in.

Oh jesus...

I’m the most injury prone guy ever. EXCEPT playing football. Playing football I just dislocated and broke fingers…no major injuries. Then on a weekend right after my Junior season I was playing a casual game of flag football and managed to destroy my shoulder.

I submit the case of my dad’s cousin Phil.
Phil has:

  • Fallen off a cliff while teaching rockclimbing
  • Broken his back when his bike got hit by a truck
  • Been struck by lightening while crossing a bridge on his bike (unrelated to above). This was on the border bridge from Detroit to Windsor. The ambulance shows up and the paramedics argue about whether to take him to the US or Canada. They stop when he starts to crawl towards the Canadian side
  • Cut off little bits of fingers teaching woodshop
  • Fallen through the ice twice in one day
  • He never catched anything when we go fishing. Ever.

I was going to say the same damn thing!

Damn, Phil must be related to Big Nog somewhere down the line, lol.

Eliot Marshall: Bader won. Like I said in the episode, I'm not going to make any excuses. It's my job to be able to deal with when somebody's doing that. It's not his job to change up his tactics.

He is probably one of those

thin guys who cannot put weight on no matter what they do. Not to mention training your butt.

Corey Hil is never going to win a LW title in the UFC. Lets be clear about that.

I 2nd that comment...

No freakin way… Aoki has a better shot…

Considering Aoki is a legit top 5 LW, I agree. Not sure why you have so much hate for an amazing talent like Aoki.

Neither will Rashad Evans or Forrest Griffin or Brock Lesnar or Matt Serra or… oh wait.

Crazier shit has happened. It’s why I love the sport.

Corey Hill has never shown anything the above fighters have shown. So, not sure what your point is. I guess you are trying to infer that anyone can win a fight in the UFC. sure, but do you REALLY see Hill beating a guy like Florian, Sanchez, Stevenson, let alone BJ Penn?

Hill is a 3rd tier small show kind of guy.

by lbk on Dec 31, 2008 3:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think...

you’re selling Hill short. He is not a 3rd tier kind of guy.

Ok. What are his credentials that in your mind, deem him worthy of higher status?

Keep in mind who he was fighting when he snapped his shin. Wasn’t exactly a quality opponent nor has he looked great in any fight I have seen him in.

by lbk on Dec 31, 2008 6:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Great find, mythbuster. I’m glad to hear that Corey is upbeat and recovering.

I also think that it’s worth noting that the UFC extended a nice bit of assistance to Corey and his family. At times we should praise the UFC and other orgs for doing good. It’s easy to to spew negativity all over every occurrence. Zuffa tried to ease the pain of a very unfortunate situation. Sometimes, that’s all one can do.

by Cannon Jacques on Dec 31, 2008 1:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Word to that!

I think the UFC leaving an employee with Hill for 6 days while he was in the hospital says a lot about how they take care of their fighters.

"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"

by Warhand on Dec 31, 2008 2:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree...

They do more than just pay them…. which some orgs have trouble doing by having “miscalculations in the books” and fighters not getting paid.

Everyone cries that there needs to be a fighters union so that these guys can get health insurance… well maybe the other organizations need something like that but from what I hear… the UFC takes care of all their fighters, not just the champions.

It’s not that uncommon. This happens in kickboxing all the time. It’s only happening in MMA more often now because the skills of strikers has developed enough that they no longer fear throwing kicks. See Gassaway vs Jose Pele Landes at HCF Alberta last year. Pele (Chute Boxe), not a bad kick boxer himself, did the same thing. I’d also like to add that that happens to guys with thicker legs than Hill. It comes down to technique and mechanics not leg thickness, give the guy a break, no pun intended. Hartt checked that kick perfectly.

by bubbafat on Dec 31, 2008 3:32 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn’t go so far as to say that it happens “all the time” but it definitely has happened before. Your right that it has nothing to do with the thickness of the kickers leg. It was more about timing. It actually shows that Hill knows how to kick and Hart knows how to check a kick.

BTW, an IV pops out because of the incompetence of the attendant, not because he was too skinny, c’mon already!

yeah...

you can IV an infant…i doubt he is un-IVable

Scary Stuff

What happened to Corey Hill. Considering that I am his height and I hold at 162.. that stuff is crazy.

by "Mr. NC-17" on Dec 31, 2008 3:55 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I got ya both beat...

I’m 6’8 and I fought at 160lbs and 175lbs for 7 years in Muay Thai and Full Contact Karate….. I never worried about my leg snapping in half until after I saw this happen. I don’t know how the hell my legs are still in one piece and the worst injury I ever had in the leg/foot area was a broken heel.

This is just a freak accident in my mind but holy sht it scared the bejesus outta me.

Well, unless you run around throwing kicks at fire hydrants and telephone poles you probably have nothing to worry about, you bean pole you.
