Goodbye Mazzagatti?
We all know about Steve Mazzagatti. He has been by far the most inconsistent and highly criticized referee in mma. He goes from really early stoppages, to dangerous uber late stoppages. He has called eye poke KO's and other really questionable calls. The last UFC event was no exception, he had late stoppages in both the Kongo/Al-Turk and the Forrest/Evans fight, wherein fighters were already taking lots of unnecessary damage.
Brock has even said that Mazzagatti will never referee any of his fights again, and it looks like Dana might take a similar stand.
UFC president Dana White was upset after the match (Forrest vs Evans) at Mazzagatti, saying he thought the stoppage was late, but was more upset over an earlier stoppage in which Cheick Kongo was bludgeoning Mostapha Al-Turk.
"He’s a nice guy, but he’s not a referee," said White.
It is the athletic commissions who decide which set of referees to assign for certain shows, and it is still likely that Steve Mazzagatti officiates in more UFC events. But if a fighter like Brock can convince the commission to not let him officiate in his fights, imagine how much strings a guy like Dana White can pull if he decides he doesn't want 'the stache' there anymore..
so will we say goodbye Mazzagatti soon? ...I hope so.

Who replaces him? And don’t say Big John because thats a given he will be back soon. Steve may let some fights go too long but thats correctable and I’d rather have him than some unproven guy. Watch some fights on HDNet with some small time shows and small time refs and you will see just how good Steve is….in comparison.

That’s an incredibly inaccurate statement. Does anyone remember how much shit Herb Dean used to get during the Tito/Shamrock era?

I always thought Mario Yamasaki was the best.

Mario and Yves are the best. PornStache is the worst, bar none. The guy watched Brock tap five times before he made Mir break the hold. What a disgrace. I still cannot believe that actually happened.

The stoppages were fine.
Dana is kissing Lesnar’s (his cash cow) ass.
Lesnar is a spoiled brat with a sense of entitlement.

Re-watch the Lesnar-Mir fight and tell me PornStache didn’t wait too long. Seriously. Go back and watch it. Lesnar tapped twice in Maz’s face. Maz sat there. Staring at Lesnar in agony. Lesnar then paused. Tapped three more times. And then Maz decided to stop the fight. Lesnar was literally slapping Mir on the ass right in front of Maz’s face and it still took this moron five times before he stopped the fight. Five. About three times too many. Watch it again. Seriously.

Seriously. Seriously. If he stopped it sooner, you would be bitching that he stopped it too early. Refs can’t win – either its too early or, seriously, too late.
That said, Lesnars problem with Mazzagati is that he dared to stop Lesnar from punching Mir in the back of the head, and enforced the rules. Instead of blaming himself for the loss, he blamed the referee.

I agree, he is a big baby. He never complained about the tapping issue. It was all about the stand up from what I remember

The point is
that when someone taps or you deem the fight to be done you do absolutely everything to stop the fight. How many times have we seen Big John basically tackle a guy or throw him to stop a fight. No one argues a early stoppage when someone taps. The back of the head thing happens to every fighter, they never think they are hitting it. So it is not just Lesnar complaining.

True, but Lesnar is the one who brought in the lawyers to get a referee changed. He blames his loss on Mazzagati for enforcing the rules.
All I’m saying is that, if Couture beat Lesnar, it would have been Yamasaki’s fault for telling Brock he’s not allowed to hold onto the cage.

Good point – no one says much at all about Brock holding on the cage to stop the takedown Randy was in process of doing.

I really like Josh Rosenthal. I believe he should be taking the place of Steve. I think Steve is not the best ref, but I will take him 100% over Dan M.

I thought the UFC had nothing to do with the referee’s
I have seen plenty fights stopped or halted due to strikes to the back of the head – so I didn’t feel Mazzagatti did anything wrong – Brock needs to stop blaming Mazz and realize that he possibly had the octagon jitters or had an adrenaline dump that or he just hits like a 4-year old

Ask Randy if Brock hits like a 4 year old

Let’s see here, Brock may have hit Randy like 30 times when he was on the ground and Randy came up clean with no damage. Did you see anything great or wonderful about the way Brock was punching Randy and Frank when they were grounded? I didn’t.
His only decent punch has been the one he hit Heath Herring with in the beginning of their fight.

I saw him only clip Randy
& he dropped like a sack of potatoes. I saw him pound his head in with hammerfists until the ref stopped him. What else do you want him to do? Randy’s face was bruised all over & he had loose teeth he said. I really could not care less, but saying he hits like a 4 year old is way more of a disrespectful remark toward Randy.

Let me be clear – Brock has power behind his punches but I am referring to the way he throws his punches – he throws them like a 4 year old fighting their sibling. It seems like when he has a grounded opponent he gets overly excited and just throws wild punches. Swick did the same when he fought Goulet – he had Goulet hurt and just started swinging wildly – like a kid.

My bad,
I misunderstood you then. Yeah, I can agree with that statement. He fights a little like a mongloid at times, but that is pretty fun to watch!

It is I admit I thought he would not do that again after the Mir fight but whatever works I guess.

They don't have anything to do with the UFC...
They are employees of the state athletic commissions. Only the state althletic commissions can fire referees… but the UFC can state they don’t want that particular official for a fight.

As bad as Dan is, he’s even better than the “keep it moving. Keep it going. Work for something” refs we’ve seen too much lately.

Dana should hire “Rapper whatever the fuck his name is Shaw” to be a quality control guy. Send videos and evidence to the ACs and such.
Eliot Marshall: Bader won. Like I said in the episode, I'm not going to make any excuses. It's my job to be able to deal with when somebody's doing that. It's not his job to change up his tactics.

WTF they're going get rid of the only ref that makes fighters fight!!!
I like everyone else knows Steve isn’t the most johnny on the spot ref….but he is the only ref that the fighters know they can’t just take someones back and rain down a bunch of fast “bitch slapping” punches and get pulled off and called the winner. In a Steve (somebodys gonna get their ass kicked) Mazzagatti fight you have to FIGHT which is why their in the cage and we’re in the stands. I think it would suck if some WWE guy can cause a ref to lose his job. Steve may not be the best but if he’s in the cage the fighters know they have to fight, defend themselves at ALL times and tap RIGHT AWAY if they know they are f—-ked. I have been fortunate enough to see 3 great UFC events in Vegas this past year and the fights with Steve as the ref were never boring.

Lesners a bitch. He’s just mad that Mazzagatti let Mir up after Lesner hit him in the back of the head. Yeah he didn’t give Lesner a verbal warning, but he’s not required to. I did think that the Congo/Al Turk fight should have been stopped a little sooner though.
