I'm Certain the WEC Does Not Need Gina Carano

Ginacarano-mostinfluential_medium

Gina Carano is named 5th most influential women in 2008 by Yahoo. Who on earth could use a fighter with such little appeal?

dana should just put gina in superfights in the ufc

by WARMMA on Dec 3, 2008 11:06 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

No

he shouldn’t. UFC is just fine. they don’t need this and it wouldn;t boost their ppv sales significantly. The WEC, however could absolutely use the boost to their ratings that Gina would bring.

Agree 100%. The UFC fails to air enough quality fights, they don’t need more of them getting bumped off the card.

The WEC, on the other hand, needs more draws.

by Day Man on Dec 3, 2008 3:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Nope..

the WEC needs her more.. the UFC will be fine without her.. and ‘superfights’?

..after cyborg (i dont think that counts as a superfight either, but whatever..), what other matchup could be called a ‘superfight’?

Maybe miguel torres? :)

Of course the UFC will be fine with out her...

But IMO for MMA overall I think it would be better if she was in UFC. WEC just needs to be on a different station. Spike, USA, TNT, TBS….

by xFenixKnightx on Dec 3, 2008 11:53 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree that the WEC would be better served on a higher profile network, but Gina would be the huge mainstream draw that they are lacking.

like elite xc? :)

..the wec is banking too much on faber and torres. Faber already lost, and what happens if torres loses too? they need more star power, and carano is the solution to that.

Aren’t you the same guy who equated the mass media/market attention Gina was able to generate with forced women’s sports on college campuses due to Title IX? And you’re critiquing someone else’s methodology?

I am just saying no one is clambering to for a woman’s over forty swimming organization as a star vehicle for Danna Torres. Why? Because the talent pool and competition is not there.

Women are not influential. The poll itself is flawed. Dara Torres is an old swimmer that I have heard say all of five word. They try to make it legit by having some powerful women like Winfrey and Clinton, but this is a joke. Very suspect evidence for Luke’s thesis. Not that I disagree, but you are not winning me over with this either.

by szucconi on Dec 3, 2008 11:43 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

What are you talking about?? This is a Yahoo! list meaning it’s not going to concern human rights activists or green company CEO’s that no one has ever heard of on it. It is going to include public faces in politics, sports, and entertainment.

Jolie is one of the highest paid people in Hollywood. She adopts friggin’ children from third world countries. She contributes an exorbitant amount of time and money helping other people.

There’s no denying the impact of women in politics like Michelle Obama, Hilary, and even Sarah Palin. Gina Carano is the face of women in MMA – a brutal but technical sport that has been dominated my men. Fighting is one section of sports and entertainment that is still dominated by males and Carano not only came in and showed she could hang in the sport but could steal the show.

You are an idiot.

by dropkick101 on Dec 3, 2008 11:49 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I realize that some of the women on the list have power and infuence, but the list is reduculous. Its like they equate popularity with infuence and that is not the case. The title is really what I have a problem with, not women having power.

You are a sheep.

by szucconi on Dec 3, 2008 11:54 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If the title is the problem, then you should have said that. Saying “Women are not influential” means something entirely different. I agree the list is stupid, but it’s not sexist or revelatory or anything other than silly. Had you said what you meant the first time, you wouldn’t be seen as a misogynist.

It is sexist. To say the play field is equal and you have to round out your top ten with a swimmer that was special because she is old and whom I haven’t seen anywhere in months is pathetic. Women need to get there act together and stop letting Jolie top this list or I am going to start a movement to take away there right to vote.

the list is about people who generate the most attention in yahoo.. Is it the swimmer’s fault that people type in her name often? There wasn’t even a claim that she’s the best swimmer out there. Learn to read you sexist fuck.

I also agree, but I wasn’t presenting it as a thesis, I was responding to the topic at hand. If this is the list, then they are not. Also, you are allowed to think I am sexist, that is fine. I just think women are being poorly represented. I like Tina Fey, head writer at SNL for years and really funny (not as funny as Amy Pohler), but she is on this list for doing an impression of someone else on the list and doing it recently. She is not that influential.

by szucconi on Dec 3, 2008 12:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah ok

I think we can all agree the list is stupid, but online polls tend to be. Your opinion of the list is not what made you sexist, of course thats your opinion… saying things like ‘women are not influential’ and ’I’m going to start a movement to take away their right to vote’ is what makes you sound sexist.

by Brynja on Dec 3, 2008 12:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

do i sense some backpedaling?

now you say theyre not represented properly because tina fey isnt that influential.. So now there are women who are influential that should be on the list? I thought there arent any influential women? i thought you wanted to start that movement to take away their voting rights?..

now youre gonna try and say that youre not sexist, and you just hate the poll?
Okay. sure. goodluck with that. :)

Me? Backpedal? never. The vote this was a joke. Don’t get you panties in a bunch. (also a joke) I would argue that 5 of the 10 have an argument to be on the list for 2008. And I will add one that you might not think of, Miley Cyrus, shaping the next generation of young women, but god is that show over acted.

by Day Man on Dec 3, 2008 4:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I liked wikipedia's definition:

Scare quotes is a general term for quotation marks used for purposes other than to identify a direct quotation. For example, authors might use quotation marks to highlight special terminology, to distance the writer from the material being reported, to indicate that it is someone else’s terminology, or to bring attention to a word or phrase as questionable or at least atypical in some way.

Scare quotes are often intended to provoke a negative association for the word or phrase enclosed in the quotes, or at least a suspicion about the appropriateness or full truth that might be presumed if the quotes were omitted. When communicating face-to-face, an approximation of scare quotes is a hand gesture known as air quotes or finger quotes, which mimics the appearance of quotation marks.

Most people that admire Palin want to..well..sleep with her?

These lists are a joke. They mix in people from different areas of life just to make the lists more interesting.

I 100% agree, however, that Gina would make a welcome addition to the WEC, whether in superfights (which i think is best) or to start a women’s division.

by Luke Thomas on Dec 3, 2008 11:45 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Which is ridiculous.

Remember when Britney flashed the cooch and everyone searched her online. I guess that would make her tops on the list at that time, lol. Well, at least part of her!

Obviously if a panel of knowledgeable people put together a list like this, she would be nowhere to be found.

And I say Tina Fey doing her impression, was actually more influential than the real Sarah Palin!

by BJJDenver on Dec 3, 2008 11:50 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think ‘influential’ is the appropriate term. It lends more credibility than ‘popular’ or something more in that vain. We’ve gone from people clamoring for Zuffa to promote female fights all the way to Gina headlining a UFC card. I believe it’s a bit much. The WEC would be a fine starting point and a low risk proposition.

“To come up with the Yahoo! Year in Review, our editors analyze search queries based upon a number of factors, including absolute volume and growth versus previous periods, to see which themes and trends bubble to the surface. Of course, individual users and their searches remain anonymous.”

It is so much complicated than any of you are giving credit to. If you don’t think “influential” is the most appropriate title, that’s one thing. But it does not follow that because the title is overreaching or inappropriate that the sustained and pronounced interest in Carano is somehow meaningless.

I think most people would consider it a no-brainer to have Carano headline or co-headline an event in the WEC.

I don’t understand why you seem to think this is an earth shattering revelation?

by lbk on Dec 3, 2008 12:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree 100% with your comment.

by lbk on Dec 3, 2008 11:45 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The WNBA just folded the Houston Comets, the team that won four league championships over the last decade. I think the whole idea of getting legions of women to watch any sport religiously – the wet dream of sporting execs everywhere – is just not going to happen. The interest simply isn’t there. Should the WEC be trying to build it? Absolutely. But are they being criminally negligent by not doing so? I don’t think so.

I like Women’s MMA, but it’s really in its infancy. You’d be hard pressed to make a 1-20 p4p list on the women’s side, and I bet the bottom half would be pretty bad. Gina-Cyborg is a fight that needs to happen. That’s it.

For what it’s worth, I watch any and every MMA fight that happens to be on for the fight itself, not the man or woman unless it is someone I am a particular fan of. Like Joachim Hanson or Cris Santos. Male and female there. Both fighters I like because of their styles. No other reason.

by szucconi on Dec 3, 2008 12:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You’re taking the poll more seriously than Yahoo is. The title is just for atmospherics. The point of the entire thing is to measure, to the extent possible, who is a mover and shaker in our culture and popular society. Carano is clearly a hugely popular figure that is making serious waves yet is unemployed. You’re hung up on semantics.

by Luke Thomas on Dec 3, 2008 12:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Its not just semantics, its meaning. If I made a list of seached fighters from sherdog and called it a top 10 fighter buzz then that would be interesting. If I did the same list and called it Smartest fighters or Best fighters then I would be laughed out of BE.

Where the hell did they get the data for this list????

Seriously, how did they determine that? How many viewers they pulled in on TV screens or in magazines or what?

I can’t imagine I could ask 50 people in my town who Gina Carano is and maybe 1 would know. Eveyone would know eveyone else on the list. How is Carano particularlly infulential? Srsly.

This debate could go on indefinitely. I’m not exactly sure the extent to which search queries are indicative of influence. “Influential” is such a subjective term that one could make a case that its use in this circumstance is fine.
Quantitatively, “influential” just doesn’t tell me much. Actually, this whole thing is just more evidence that Gina Carano is a popular figure with a broad appeal.

Maybe, we should just take the list for what it is and not get too terribly upset over Yahoo’s imprecise usage of certain terms.

Holy Crap!!

So last nite i came home with a few beers in me, so i popped online and did my ritualistic check of BloodyElbow.com. I see in another post that Luke really favors Carano in the WEC, so i let my frustration out in a post basically stating that Carano and Womens MMA is severely overrated. Then i wake up this morning and theres a whole thread and flame session dedicated to Carano and womens MMA. Obviously this is a hot button issue, and most of the people on this site (most of whom i generally like) have been to politically correct to talk about it.

I’m still not convinced that a full Women’s division in WEC could be successful. Gina is enormously popular but outside her and Cyborg, would people watch other fights. I just think people like seeing her fight cause she’s attractive and a celebrity. If I were Gina I’d try to stay on CBS with whoever might pick up the contract (KOTC ?,etc.)

I think people would watch other fights

maybe it would start small and take time, but MMA had to grow in popularity anyway. It’s still growing. I would watch other female fights. My fiance would watch other female fights. Other people I know would for sure… thats a few right there and thats just people I know.

by Brynja on Dec 3, 2008 12:46 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Women don’t watch boxing, kick boxing, other violent sports for a reason. They generally don’t like watching violent sports.

Why do people think women MMA fighters will draw in women for some reason? It’s still violent in its core.

Will more men watch if Carano fights? Maybe. I personally couldn’t care less and don’t think women should be fighting in MMA.

Can’t there ONE thing that women aren’t able to join? And if there is, shouldn’t MMA be good enough to qualify as that one thing?

Not trying to come off sexist, I just generally don’t like seeing women bleeding.

I have seen the light. I shall stop training martial arts this instant, no matter that it is my whole life and has been for the last 6 years! I shall stop watching all of the boxing, MMA and Thai Boxing fights I enjoy SO much cause it’s just stupid I mean why the hell would I like that being a woman and all. I think I will watch Desperate Housewives instead.

OK, I am off now to go and find a nice knitting club… or maybe crochet? actually lbk what do you think? maybe you should tell me what to do? knitting or crochet I can’t decide.

by Brynja on Dec 3, 2008 1:00 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I prefer knitting. I knit while watching fights sometimes. I need something to do with my hands. Plus, when you are done you have a blanket so thats a bonus.

I’ve got a lovely cross-stitch I’ve been working on that maybe you can help me with tonight.

by Brett Jones on Dec 3, 2008 1:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The funny thing is, I know you are kidding because cross-stitch is borring and stupid looking. It is truly busy work. Knitting, which I really can do, is functional. I have a problem with purling (I am not good at it), but my goal is to make my own sock. I was told that if you knit your own socks then they will last forever.

So should we throw you a coming out party, or do you not want to break your mother’s heart so close to Christmas?

by Brett Jones on Dec 4, 2008 9:36 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I sincerely douby I am in the minority with this opinion.

by lbk on Dec 3, 2008 1:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

well fortunately to me your opinion is not worth anything

the opinions of people that matter to me are all positive and support my training – my fiance / MMA instructor is the proudest guy in the world to have a girl who is a good fighter, likes to watch fights for the fights and totally supportive of his training too. My Thai Boxing instructor is so proud when I am winning fights by knock out and TKO, and training harder than anyone else in the gym, male or female. All my friends at the gym (mostly male I may add) have never been as disrepectful as you were above. I am one of the best fighters in my gym. I love the sport – its my life and I would never give it up. So if you were ever around me or the people in my life, you would be the minority opinion.

And I can already knit AND crochet by the way, I am just one hell of a mulit talented girl and proud of it.

I think womens MMA is a novelty at this point, but so was the UFC in the begining. It needs time to grow. One thing I think people miss is that they think Women’s MMA will bring in big numbers from women, not true. It will still be bringing in men, just more of them to try to see carano or someone as good looking. But that;s its path to growth and development. The NFL is big and growing with women veiwers, but that is a long, long term goal. The shorter term goal is to make events a must see thing for the target, men. Then women will slowly start to get sucked in by men they know and other women fans that they know. Does womens MMA need to be included in this? no. But it is going to get a lot of fresh eyes and possibly short cut a lot of the garbage tactics like giving Lesner a title shot before he was tested. Before I get another mass set of replies, let me clearify. He is great at what he does, but has holes like his ground game. He fought one ground fighter and lost, but still got a title shot. Great match up and fight, but questionable on merit. I mean Cote got through Almedia first, at least.

by szucconi on Dec 3, 2008 1:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, and good luck with fighting, but I would tone down the “training harder than anyone else in the gym, male or female” talk. If you are that confident that you are the hardest worker then you need to find a new gym. Its one thing to get that said about you by others, but everyone I ever have known to say that about themselves was mistaken or training with scrubs.

On another note, where do you fight? what part of the country?

by szucconi on Dec 3, 2008 1:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

well normally

I am the most modest person you could meet! I think I have the right to be a little defensive, especially if others have the right to be so opinionated. I was defending my interests and things I love, I don’t see that women have any less right to love fight sports than men. Yes alot of women hate blood and violence, but some men do so what?

I train in the midlands in England and fight wherever the shows are.

I expected Cali or Canada.

I thought you might be upselling to better state your point, but everyone works hard and I hate it when people think they are working hardest when that really doesn’t mean anything. But you were just making a point and I understand.

If you take that much offense to a comment like that, your head would melt if you actually opened your eyes and realized how little people actually care about women in MMA. You’re like that woman in HS..you know..the ONE..that likes to try out every year for the wrestling team and causes an uproar. Sure, she is capable and willing but in the end, does anyone really care?

Again, I don’t like to see women punch each other. I suspect most share my opinion (Ever hear Bas Ruttens take on the subject..you should it would enlighten you). Sorry you take offense to it.

by lbk on Dec 3, 2008 2:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It was more of a build up of offense at a few comments not just one.

I think people do care about women in MMA, If they didnt there would be such heated debates. There are just very diverse opinions on it. But whatever, your opinion is quite clear and you’re welcome to it. Like I said I am just glad I am lucky enough to be surrounded by supportive people.

sexist, more like misogynist & perspective

"Will more men watch if Carano fights? Maybe. I personally couldn’t care less and don’t think women should be fighting in MMA. Can’t there ONE thing that women aren’t able to join? And if there is, shouldn’t MMA be good enough to qualify as that one thing?

Not trying to come off sexist, I just generally don’t like seeing women bleeding"

you definitely are coming off sexist w/ that remark. please, u sound like karo parisyian. why is it that there HAS TO BE one thing men do that women don’t do?? saying you don’t like watchin em bleed is a copout, b/c the “ONE thing” “they can’t join”, etc. are your true feelings. are you not secure enough that you really care that women participate in things that men do, MUST there be exclusivity?

you don’t like it, then don’t watch, but plain and simple, women and people in general should be able to participate in anything they damn well want to regardless of sex, race, etc. people are blowing this list out of proportion. many young female teens and women tell gina that she is an inspiration to them, or that they have taken up mma b/c of her, or they’re happy to see a female fighter doing well, blah blah.
you want to call that influence, sure, go ahead,

i don’t think yahoo was trying to come off as saying that the women they named deserve nobel peace or pulitizer prizes. take things in context, including the fact that the ole boys clubs are few and far between in the 21st century.

Who has she influenced you ask? The South Carolina girl. lol

You know…The one that wants to feed and educate the South Africas and the Iraqs.

And the asian countries, you can’t forget about the Asian countries.

Well...

there was that big poll that came out earlier this week stating that the overwhelming majority of republicans want her to run in 2012 and become the “face of the party” for the future. So I’d say she does have some influence…my own personal feelings on her aside.

She’s got tremendous charm to her base and she drives those not from her base away from her as if she has the plague.

That’s influence, doncha know. wink

Apparently when you put a word between two asterisks (*) it makes that word bold.

So, that’s weird and sort of ruins the joke. But I was serious about her being influential, if not necessarily in the way she or her part would intend.

Angelina Jolie is more influential for adopting kids than Hilary Clinton was for running as president?

What a joke.

I bet that Yahoo judges influence by the number of web searches through its browser. If you search for them then I guess they’re deemed “influential”.

THIS IS A LIST COMPILED VIA METRICS BASED ON SEARCH TRAFFIC!

Everyone needs to chill out a bit with the bashing of the people who put together the list. Yes, the title of said list is misleading…but seriously guys…chill out a bit.

I wouldn't call it stupidity

It’s a matter of what you like. I personally don’t think women should be punching each ther in the face either. Does that make me sexist?

by rainmaker6 on Dec 3, 2008 9:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Not necessarily. Just don’t say it’s stupid to enjoy women’s MMA. It’s an amazingly unacceptable position.

Loving every comment

Haha – Brent. I’m loving every comment. It’s weird how this little poll could have created such a huge BE firestorm. The pity is there is no intelligent debate going on here. It’s just people sticking up their own random thoughts and everyone else jumping on them.

To everyone else: My two cents.

1. This is an opinion piece by a Yahoo writer that ranks the individuals on how much they get searched and includes their own personal bias. It’s NOT a simple who gets searched more (that list is here http://buzz.yahoo.com/yearinreview2008/top10/). Having said that, if this were the week after A Night in Paris came out then Paris Hilton would probably have been ranked one of the top ten most influential women on the planet.

2. The writer seemed to have deliberately chosen postive female role models. For this reason highly searched celebrities like Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan were left out. This year was an election year so political figures came in relatively high.

3. Gina Carano is a great positive role model for girls. Beautiful and talented, no one can say that she has just been relying on her looks alone. She trains and fights as hard as anyone.

4. Lets stick to MMA and take the whole feminism debate elsewhere. Would I like to watch female MMA? To be honest – I’m not that keen. I have the ‘Dana’ viewpoint that I’m not really into seeing girls beating each other up. No offense intended to any girls who train MMA – all respect to you, but that’s just not my thing. Just like I don’t like watching girls play football. I think a WNFL would be the dumbest thing ever.

5. Would Gina Carano in the WEC be good for MMA. Most definitely. I think she would hugely up the profile of the WEC. It’s the perfect venue for her to showcase her talents. It would help the WEC leverage a better TV deal and get more exposure for uber-talented guys like Miguel Torres and Urijah Faber. I agree with previous musings of only having ONE womens weight class at 145. There really isn’t a necessity to have more weight classes. In fact it’s a pity that Gina is actually as big as she is because I think a more suitable weight would be somewhere around 130. The majority of women would be able to make this weight class and make a fight competitive. When the talent pool gets deeper then more weight classes can be added in.

6. Hillary Clinton would kick Gina Carano’s ass anyday of the week. Twice on Sunday when God has got her back.
