Whither UFC 95?

Stay connected for news and updates

Looking at the past few UFC events, and with persistent rumours that neither Chuck Liddell nor Anderson Silva want to be fighting as early as February, I'm beginning to wonder whom Joe Silva will want to put up as the main event for UFC 95 in London this February.

Personally, the matches that I'd love to see take center stage would be

  • Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir - unlikely, but possible
  • Quinton Jackson vs. Forrest Griffin (rematch) - both big draws in the UK
  • Randy Couture vs. Minotauro Nogueira - depends on Big Nog's medical suspension

Now as much as I would love to see the HW "unification" fight on UK soil, I'm sceptical that it would happen since the UFC have a fairly heavy card in '94 happening just three weeks earlier. Mir vs. Lesnar has massive PPV buys written all over it and, historically, most UFC events outside of US soil have been free to air on Spike TV... therefore either

a) The UFC won't financially shoot themselves in the foot in such a manner, or

b) They give their US viewers a belated Valentines present in a free-to-view Ubermatch

Looking at Quinton Jackson vs. Forrest Griffin, well... logically it's a good fight for Jackson as he's now based out of the UK, and his performance at '92 should have shut up all those nay-sayers who bitched about Wolfslair being a poor choice of camp for him.

Forrest has a great fan following in the UK - partly from his status as the premier TUF almuni and also on account of his Irish heritage (see UFC 72). His loss at '92 has not diminished his stock and he would still pull in one hell of a live gate.

Trouble is... I don't see Joe Silva going for this match-up, no matter how much Rampage would like it to be so. Whilst it would be good for business if Rampage won... what does he do if Forrest whups him again? Maybe we should see Griffin take on rising star Cheick Kongo first to help determine the LHW standings...

So we come to Randy Couture vs. Minotauro Nogueira. Assuming that the contracts could be pulled together and that Big Nog doesn't have too long a medical suspension to serve (or is cleared tout de suite) then this match has all the necessary hallmarks of an anchor event for '95.

But hey - what do I know? I'm just a guy who points and clicks with my camera at these shindigs (according to my better half... though she has no problem spending the paychecks!) so please, chip in with your points of view on what might be the main event for '95.
