BE Nation: Your predictions for 2009

I've been seeing posts about the BE Nation's best and worst predictions of 2008... well what are some predictions y'all have for 2009.  Here are some of mine:

- Affliction will go under and ProElite won't come back.

- Brock Lesnar will lose to Big Nog.

- GSP will beat BJ Penn but will then lose to Thiago Alves.

- BJ Penn will remain Lightweight Champ

- Miguel Torres will remain Bantamweight Champ in the WEC but I predict a superfight between Torres and Urijah Faber for WEC's first PPV.

- WEC will introduce women's MMA... but they won't get Gina Carano.

- Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett will come back to the UFC.

- The Ultimate Fighter tv show won't see 2010.

- K-1 will become more of a threat to the UFC than any other organization, the organization... not kickboxing as a whole.

- Fedor will retire since he won't ever fight in the UFC and no Japanese organization will be able to afford to pay him to fight.

- Anderson Silva will lose in 2009… I just don’t know to who.

- Jake Shields, Robbie Lawler, Joe Villasenor, and Eddie Alvarez will come to the UFC

- No one in the UFC will hold titles in two different weight classes… but either Miguel Torres or Donald Cerrone will in the WEC.

- Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos will be the first WEC women’s champ… she’ll divorce Evangelista Santos shortly after that.

- The following fighters will retire in 2009: Matt Serra, Matt Hughes, Tim Sylvia, Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, Mirko Cro Co, Sakuraba, and Fedor.

- Aleksander Emelianenko will go to prison for murder.

What do you guys think will happen in 2009?

I predict...

- PE and Affliction will both fold completely
- Kenny Florian will beat BJ Penn for the LW title (after BJ loses to GSP)
- Brock Lesnar will beat Big Nog, and subsequently lose to Shane Carwin
- The UFC will begin it’s slow worldwide takeover with events in the Philippines and Mexico
- Thiago Silva and Luis Cane will enter the top 5 with impressive victories

and finally…

Your new Middleweight Champion…Demian Maia

How dare you predict a BJ loss at LW, lol!!!

Eliot Marshall: Bader won. Like I said in the episode, I'm not going to make any excuses. It's my job to be able to deal with when somebody's doing that. It's not his job to change up his tactics.

Wow...

I’m more surprised by the fact that Carwin even gets a shot at the title in 2009…. I’m thinking there will be a number 1 contender match between Velasquez and Carwin, Velasquez scores the upset but would lose to Big Nog.

You really think Kenny Florian can beat BJ? I think the only way that happens is if BJ goes back to old habits and doesn’t take Florian seriously…. which could happen if he loses to GSP.

Carwin gets the shot at the end of 09'

after destroying Gonzaga, and then blowing past Dos Santos in July/August.

And I really think that Kenny has the tools to beat BJ, and that BJ will probably lose interest after he loses to GSP. Kenny has great defensive BJJ and his striking has become (warning: opinion) at least as good as BJ’s.

My predictions:

-Randy will retire by the end of the year.

-Anderson will fight for LHW title.

-Affliction will alter their business model and put on 3 cards.

-Fedor will NOT fight in the UFC (I know, big stretch!)

-Karo Parysian will be released by the UFC.

-Roger Gracie will fight.

-CBS will air some form of mma.

Karo Parysian...

I agree with that… but I bet that happens before 2008 ends.. lol

CBS won’t air MMA… but NBC will… Strikeforce will probably get a primetime slot… finally.

BJ loses to GSP & Florian

GsP beats Thiago & loses to Anderson Silva

Brock lesnar is UFC HW champion in December of ‘09, that’s when he’ll fight and beat Fedor

Torres will be the champion all the way through 2009, won’t get a chance to fight Yamamoto till 2010

Marquardt beats Anderson Silva, Maia isn’t given the chance

Alvarez loses to Aoki, doesn’t come to the UFC

That's just a big son of a bitch -- that's all there is to it.

I am in 95% synchronicity here – but as much as I love Kenny… I just don’t see it.

My Predictions....

B.J. will beat both GSP & Kenny Florian

Tito Ortiz will be back in the UFC.

Leonard Garcia will be the New WEC featherweight champ.

Arianny Celeste will do playboy (this is the one i hope happens most :)

I will be the 2009 BE Betting Game champ….there you just heard it folks.

by asmiley420 on Dec 27, 2008 12:17 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Tito comes back?

I don’t think he does…. I bet that the secret buyer of ProElite is Jenna Jameson and she bankrolls an event for Tito that never sees the light of day, she then divorces him and Tito is signing autographs at comic book conventions so he doesn’t become homeless.

Leonard Garcia definitely wins the Featherweight belt… but either Torres or Cerrone take it from him.

Rec'd

Love the first prediction. Love Alves, but if GSP beats BJ then he’s probably going right for Anderson Silva (which may be the loss you allude to later). Hope you’re wrong about most of the retiring fighters – just because you’re not #1 anymore doesn’t mean you can’t put on a show, test up and comers, make money, etc.

Is anyone else just crazy down for, like, Barnett-Velasquez or Arlovski-Carwin?

Sorry man...

Maybe Randy and Chuck stick around… but I firmly believe the others will retire… some of them it will be because its long over due, others cuz they can’t compete, and the other just to piss everyone off (Fedor)

machida LHW champion
brock beats nog but loses title before the year ends
silva doesnt retire
bj wins against gsp by beating him up standing then getting the submission..
GSP vs Bj 3 by the end of the year.
Dos santos becomes a true contender and cain doesnt.

The UFC Light Heavyweight Division

I think the title is going to change hands a few times over 2009. I agree that Machida will win it at some point, but he won’t hang on to it. I’m willing to bet we’ll see Machida’s first defense against either Wanderlei Silva or Rampage. I think Wanderlei will get the belt in 2009.

by Gunslinger20 on Dec 27, 2008 4:43 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i think the winner of rampage/wandy tonight gets the title shot, then machida beats the winner of that to be champ..they wont give an immediate title shot to machida even if he wins against thiago, the wandy rampage will get much more coverage and hype, so they’ll give them the title shot first.. Maybe machida could fight the loser, or the winner of shogun/coleman in route to the next title shot.

but i predict that machida will get the strap mid or late 09

Barnett will be the new HW champ
Rampage reclaims the LHW strap and keeps it through ’09
Chuck vs. Wandy part duex
BJ beats Florian and whoever else wants some @ 155
Junie Browning goes undefeated
Cung Lee goes to the UFC and gets beat by the Spider
Hendo sets him self up for a title shot in 2010 @ 205
