1038_medium

Via Sherdog:

Forrest Griffin (205) vs. Rashad Evans (203)
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (246) vs. Frank Mir (251)
CB Dollaway (186) vs. Mike Massenzio (184)
Wanderlei Silva (203) vs. Quinton Jackson (206)
Cheick Kongo (233) vs. Mustapha al Turk (237)
Yushin Okami (185) vs. Dean Lister (186)
Antoni Hardonk (246) vs. Mike Wessel (260)
Matt Hamill (205) vs. Reese Andy (206)
Ryo Chonan (171) vs. Brad Blackburn (170)
Dan Evensen (242) vs. Patrick Barry (233)

Thankfully, everyone hit weight.  Wanderlei Silva and Rampage Jackson still don't seem to care for one another's company as you can see in the video after the jump.

wandi shoving rampage was no surprise. nog weighing 246 was the only thing that stood out . seems a little heavy to me.

by bdw on Dec 27, 2008 12:29 AM EST reply actions

Yeah. That sounded heavy for Nog. Maybe he’s bulking up in preparation for these huge guys like Lesnar, and Mir’s is pretty big himself.

That worked out well for Werdum…

Not to happy about his weight in regards to my bet.

it's

9 pounds above what he weighed for the Sylvia fight. Just as a point of reference.

Rashad coming in at 203 didn’t stick out a little? I realize he’ll be that much faster coming in lighter, but Forrest is a big dude. Both will put on weight overnight, but will speed beat size? I guess we’ll see tonight. Great card, can’t wait.

by Dabashire on Dec 27, 2008 12:36 PM EST up reply actions

I think so

Speed is how Rashad beat Liddel (quicker to the punch, counter before the initial strike lands, etc). I assume he’s betting on his speed here, and I think he has a hell of a chance.

by mythbuster on Dec 27, 2008 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

Not knocking his chances at all…if he lands a shot like he did against liddel, he could be in the 180’s and still put Forrest down. I was thinking more from a takedown perspecive, which he may just stand and bang. His stand-up has been great lately.

Just noticed that Wandi showed up light too…I just find it interesting is all.

by Dabashire on Dec 27, 2008 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

I think it’s a sign of overtraining. And this is not a good sign. We shall see.

by jebushchrist on Dec 27, 2008 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

He looked fat to me. Lucky for him he’s fighting Mir who can’t go 10 minutes at any sort of pace so it shouldn’t matter. Mir has a chance early but if Nogueira gets past the 2nd he should dominate from there.

Someone needs to cockpunch Bruce Buffer.

Am I the only one looking forward to Kongo vs Al Turk? I really think this has the ability to be fight of the night, two guys just beating the hell out of each other. The staredown was awesome, Kongo trying to make Al Turk flinch and he just stands there…………

Man this card may not only be the fight card of the year but possibly the best mma card ever? I think if the main event doesn’t go to a boring decision we might have a historic card on our hands gentleman.

Can’t friggin wait for this tomorrow err….today I guess.

My nominee for the best card ever is PRIDE Final Conflict Absolute. An incredible event on paper – it’s surprising that it managed to fulfill its promise.

This is one of the best cards this year, though – it will be exciting – we’re practically guaranteed at least one KO and one sub.

I still have a strong preference for...

PRIDE Final Conflict 2003

Wandy/Yoshida
Chuck/Rampage
Wandy/Rampage (first meeting)
Cro Cop/Nogueira (still my favorite fight ever from the standpoint of what it felt like to watch it live)
Saku/Randleman was fairly boring but had a great finish
Hendo/Busta was a bit of a disappointment but oh well..

grand prix aren’t even fair to compare

you get to see the same great fighters fight more than once in a night lol

by dbcb on Dec 27, 2008 1:19 PM EST up reply actions

True, the GP Finals aren’t fair to compare because they fight twice in one night – the only crapout of a final was the 2006 WWGP at Bushido 13 (Misaki def Kang).

UFC 73 was the best recent card from them I can think of at the moment – shame it didn’t live up to the potential.
Also, PRIDE Shockwave 2006 was excellent matchmaking.

Yes ChillMike

A lot of people are sleeping on Al Turk V Kongo, this should be a blast! Turk trains near me at London Shootfighters and is as tough as nails, and I am hoping my hometown boy comes through!

best card this year is still

UFC 84 to me. that card was loaded and all the fights were awesome as well.

by Nick Travaglini on Dec 27, 2008 8:47 AM EST reply actions

Absolutely. Same with UFC 88. I know everyone went around after UFC 91 saying that it was the best, but I’m guessing that has to do with the combination of a good chunk of the fanbase being totally willing to watch mismatches in the UFC (and thus rate them as if they weren’t) along with a pro-wres inspired love of Lesnar.

91

91 had alot of appeal to me simply because they showed all 9 fights. With two 5 rounders this card. I doubt we see that again. However if we get 7 or 8 fights on the the card shown. I will be happy with that.

Its nice to see all the fights, but I’d rather see an all time classic 3-5 round fight than a Bocek/Robinson type bout. I’ve got stacks of Icon Sport stuff for those kind of midlevel fights.

by D.Capitated on Dec 27, 2008 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

84 was a great card after the fact. This is a great card beforehand. We shall see if it turns out great (it should). All cards are good depending on whether you’re a fan of the fighters or not. For me, this is an excellent card. I’m excited to see what Pat Barry can do, all three main events, Hamill, and the fight between Dollaway/Messenzio. I’m just excited to watch up and comers who may one day become great as watching the same established veterans fight.

Wanderlei looks the most cut I’ve seen him in awhile. He looks like he has his mojo back.

My favorite part of the evening will be when/if they show the Hard-on fight. I wonder why they don`t pronounce the K in his name? Anyways, it`s hilarious when Hard-on is on top!

If I were him, my fighter-nick would be Antoni “Big” Hardonk.

"They called him the axe-murderer because he was murdering chumps. They should have been calling him the chump-murderer..." Rampage Jackson (commentating on the fighting abilities of Wanderlei "F#ck Chuck" Silva.)

by BlueberryMuffin on Dec 27, 2008 9:34 AM EST reply actions

look how much bigger silva’s head is.

and at rampage’s lack of pecs…

neither of these has anything to do w/ fighting…just kinda what stuck out

and to Blueberry Muffin… very nyice!

wand + SHAVED HEAD!!! im jacked up baby!

by lunedi18 on Dec 27, 2008 11:29 AM EST reply actions

YEAH HAHA

Wand’s shaved head means he’s going to be streamlined and ready for action.

by Dooda on Dec 27, 2008 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

Wandi, surprisingly looked about the same size as Page. I always sort of thought that Page was quite a bit bigger.

by Dooda on Dec 27, 2008 12:11 PM EST reply actions

I am pretty sure page is HEAVILY depleted in those pics. Probably doesn’t have an ounce of water in those muscles, making him look flat as shit. I bet he will look bigger come fight time.

by dbcb on Dec 27, 2008 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

So excited for the Silva/Rampage fight. It’s gonna be a barn burner.

by pud333 on Dec 27, 2008 12:39 PM EST reply actions

Hey whats the reach advantage for Nog on Mir?
I have Nog at 6’3 and Mir at 6’1, but does Nog have a huge reach advantage?
I know Nog has good boxing, but I think he’s slowed down. Ive seen nothing from Mir in terms of stand up, but hes gotta be alot quicker then Nog. Does Nog have a huge reach advantage? Anybody help me out here?

by TonyGunnZ on Dec 27, 2008 12:40 PM EST reply actions

Dudes i am so stoked for this card. I keep playing the wand/rampage stare down and wow! PUMPED!!!!!!!

by poundnground on Dec 27, 2008 3:19 PM EST reply actions

Wandy is fucking nuts.
Rampage just looks and laughs at him.
So happy am I
