Frank Mir Doesn't Understand the Blatantly Obvious
I'm almost out the door to Vegas, but I had to make a quick comment on Frank Mir's comments to Steve Cofield.
There are a lot of things Frank Mir has expressed confusion about lately. I will try to help him understand, given that it is still basically Christmas and I am in the giving spirit.
Why did Randy Couture fight Brock Lesnar? Because it was part of the deal to get him to come back; it was a huge payday and Randy thought he would win. It would also serve to heat up the concept of title unification.
Is it unfair that Lesnar got a title shot? Not really. How did Frank Mir earn his shot? He beat a 1-0 fighter. If I have to hear Mir talk about how Lesnar gets everything because of his name again I'll scream. The only reason Mir was on TUF and in a world title match is because of Brock Lesnar's name. He beat him on a gigantic PPV and got a lot of notoriety, he should be sending Lesnar's whole family half of his bonus rather than slamming him.
The idea of him complaining about fighting five rounds for nothing is ridiculous. The match was made for the title when they thought Randy was never coming back. They based an entire season of their show around the match.
Even though Brock-Randy was unjustified in a pure sport sense, this fight is far less justified. Randy went into that fight as the underdog; the fact that most people thought Brock would win made it legitimate in a sense, and the fact that he did win legitimized it retrospectively. On the other hand, Mir is a huge underdog in this fight, and I don't believe it will even be competitive unless Nogueira got too old in the last 10 months.

You, as well as a lot of others seem to really have a true dislike for Frank Mir… The fact that you’ve basically had nothing but bad things to say about him in regards to this match, but tout Brock as deserving a title shot based on what the general audience thinks is baffling… Obviously Brock has legitimate drawing power, but Mir beat him… Mir is also a former champ regardless if you think he’s as “terrible” as you’ve previously stated… For what it’s worth I hope Mir beats Nog simply to have to see you, and every other person who has disrespected him throughout the last few weeks have to write about him being the New Interim champ… And then provide the excuses and the various reasons that Lesner will beat Mir this time…
In fairness. It isn’t exactly like Frank Mir just blew through Brock Lesnar.
There was a very controversial stoppage/standup and point deduction when it looked like
Mazzagati was going to stop the fight. The person Frank needs to give half his bonus to is Steve Mazzagati for stoping the Brock Lesnar onslaught onto Frank’s head.
Bottom line is that Frank better get his talking in now. Because 95 times out of 100. Brock Lesnar beats Frank Mir. All the talk just ensures that Dana books a rematch.
" Tell me something Steve, How does a guy from Puerto Rico loose a ball in the Sun? "
Frank Mir’s record just isn’t impressive. All he really has is a win over Sylvia. A couple of scrubs have beaten him too. Big Nog is undeniably the 2nd best HW as his only two clear losses were to Fedor. Nog has also beaten everyone, sometimes a few times.
Brock was destroying Mir when he got caught in a basic submission move. At this point he has got the basics down enough not to get caught in it again. Herring started to try the same move several times and got blocked. He also gave Herring a far worse beating than Nog.
Blah Blah Blah
Frank Mir needs to look in the mirror and see how fortunate he is. Since his return he :
- Lost to Marcio Cruz
- Beat Dan Christison in the worst fight I’ve ever seen (and if that happened today, he would have been dropped by the UFC, but at the time, the HW division in the UFC was terrible)
- Was destroyed by Brandon Vera
- Beat Hardonk with a quick sub
- Was very fortunate to get a win over Lesnar after a very questionable stand-up when he was being pummeled
Your sense of entitlement is obscene, Frank. By your own accounts, you’re fortunate to be fighting at all. So just stop complaining, try training for your fights (for a change), and win.
The word is ‘prima donna’, and has nothing to do with female pop stars or the Virgin Mary.
And on the subject of Mir, his interview with Cofield seems less like genuine confusion about why Randy Couture would fight Brock Lesnar and more an analytical criticism about the complete pointlessness of an interim heavyweight championship belt and a five round championship match to win that belt; especially considering that we now have a so-called definitive heavyweight champion and nobody, with the exception of hardcore fans, seems to give a crap about interim-anything. Call it griping or complaining or whatever the hell you want, but it seems more like incredulity and scathing criticism than anything else and I can’t say that I disagree.
Speaking of incredulity, there’s hardly a comparison to be made about being deserving of title shots between Mir (who was 7-1 in the UFC before fighting Tim Sylvia [a fight in which Sylvia was heavily favored and probably expected by the UFC to win]) and Lesnar (who was 0-1 in the UFC and fought a guy who you seem to think is a sub-par fighter). That being said, I’m not one of those people who thinks Lesnar shouldn’t have been given a title shot, but I can certainly understand the position of those who think the opposite.
Another Correction
Lesnar was 1-1. I’m just completely ‘illegitimizing’ my own post here. Hah.
LOL
Jesus, I need a dictionary. While I was typing “pre-madonna”, I felt like a dumbass. Yes, prima donna.

Even if it’s criticism of the interim title, it’s a stupid criticism. There are tons of reasons why this situation worked out the way it did. They spent a whole season of TUF promising a HW title fight, now they have to give the fans a HW title fight. What is the other option, strip Nog of the HW belt because Randy decided to go back?
I also disagree with you saying that only hardcore fans give a crap about interim anything. In my view, only hardcore fans know about interim anything, and many seem to use it as a point to bash the UFC/whine about Brock getting a title shot. For the common fan, this is just another title match, and a title match is always better than a non-title match. Most of the UFC fans that don’t watch any other MMA, don’t know any of the details of why there are 2 HW champions, and they probably don’t care. They just know that there’s a HW title match on Saturday, and after Saturday, they’ll know the winner gets a shot at Lesnar in a “title unification match.” And like a title match is always better than a non-title match, Champion vs. Champion is even better.
What is the other option, strip Nog of the HW belt because Randy decided to go back?
They could have stripped Randy of the UFC belt for leaving the UFC. That would have solved some things.
and my opinion is Mir seems a decent guy. Don’t buy the TUF stuff or the pre-fight talk. In interviews I’ve read, he comes across as a stand up guy.
That was a valid option maybe a year ago. But it would have been a stupid one. The UFC knew Randy couldn’t get out of the contract, what would they do with him if they stripped him of the belt?
Give him a title shot when he came back, or do whatever they are going to with him now.
It really wasn’t fair for Randy to hold the belt hostage (and NOT defend it) while he was in limbo. I’m not saying I would have agreed with stripping him of the belt, but I certainly wouldn’t have been against it.
Well...
It’s hard not to feel bad for a guy who had his career laid to waste for a while by a horrific crash.
But I manage. Shut up and fight.

You know I really am going to get alot enjoyment after Mir beats Nog at UFC 92, the flood of disrespect that people have shown Frank since this fight was announced is baffling to me. And nothing more will make me happier than to see all these loud mouth jackasses eat their words on every MMA blog or MB on the net.
If anyone seriously thinks Mir doesn’t understand the business and politics of the sport, then I’ve got an igloo to sell you. Mir comes across to me as one of the more intelligent and well spoken fighters out there, and one who can be brutally honest about himself and his analysis of his own fights. He just seems to be able to channel his inner douche bag very well when he needs to, to hype up interest in himself and his fights.
I like Mir
on most topics, however lately whenever the subject of Lesnar comes up he goes off of the rails.
Well, maybe that will give him a bit of incentive to beat Nog…and if not and Lesnar wins the follow on match…we may see Mir’s head explode.
Anyone who watches TUF and makes up their mind to not like a guy is a bigger idiot than Junie, most of the stuff that is said and done is for show to make good tv. The Mir dislike from TUF reminds me of the Karo hate I see now adays it’s amazing that a show that is not liked by many fans and pundits manages to change people’s opinions of fighters they’ve never met. I suggest people put down the remote and actually meet some of these fighters then make an opinion on whether you want to cheer for them or not, instead of letting tv reality show editors determine your opinions it’s just common sense to me.
Mir Masterpiece
I dont think Nogueira got too old in 10 months but, Mir fought a well planned out strategy to beat him up and stuck to it. He way dying to jump on him after he knocked him down in the first round but stuck to the plan. At this point he doen’t have hours of tape to sudy Lensars technique……. OXYMORON. HA….. But I think Mir will take Brock again.
This thread along with many others has been a great source of laughter today, I can’t tell you how much enjoyment I have gotten at the expense of all the Mir bashers. For months I had to put up with hearing a bunch guys run their mouths and bash Frank at all times now we’ll see if they can take it like they can dish it out I love it.
