Quote of the Day: Mac Danzig Is All Class
"Well, according to Quinton himself, he is actually God. So if that's true, he wins any way he wants. But in the real world, I pick Wanderlei."
-- Mac Danzig, picking Wanderlei to beat Rampage this Saturday at UFC 92. To be sure, I've beaten the drum that Rampage has issues of personal responsibility he needs to contend with, but I also recognize he's issues are more mental health than immorality. Danzig's comment is an ugly cheap shot and a continuation of some sort of personal vendetta he has against Rampage.

Meh
It’s Mac Danzig. He is going to prove that he is the biggest TUF Winner bust out of all 8 seasons.

I think this stems more from him being an atheist.

WTF
I’m Atheist, and I would never say something so damn low.
You should try respecting others religious (or lack there-of) beliefs.
Do you think all Muslims are terrorists too?

Ya no shit, keep religious bigotry to yourself and off this site.

How did you possibly infer anything about me from my comment about Mac’s belief system?

“I think this stems more from him being an atheist.”
How do you not?
by EnsignFrog on Dec 25, 2008 8:33 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It depends on whether you read the statement as “He’s a dirty atheist, so he’s mocking Rampage” or “Objectively, it appears his dislike stems from being an atheist.” I originally read it as “observational”, though the “derisive” interpretation is certainly legitimate, given its brevity.

I took that as a joke – he doesn’t believe in Quinton because he doesn’t believe in god. Get it?
Okay, not a funny joke, but….

Danzig is a buddhist, not an atheist.
by The Ghost of Spike Owen on Dec 25, 2008 4:31 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Technically, Buddhism is atheistic.
Atheism just means you don’t believe in an overriding god(s) of the universe, which is in line with buddhist beliefs. Siddartha Gutama is not revered as a diety, just the first to achieve true enlightenment. Buddhists do believe in a metaphysical structure to the universe, but not a conscious one, similar to how gravity is a law that defines physical reality, but is not self-aware. Atheism is frequently confused with materialsim (belief in pnly the physical world/matter) or nihilism (belief in nothing).

Yes, yes, smarty-pants, but as you well know, in this country we generally use atheist to mean people without spiritual beliefs of any kind. No more hair-splitting – it’s Xmas! (or was)

It’s not hair-splitting, the difference is important. This is one instance where discussing semantics matters because of the nuance in the beliefs. Since most people assume that atheism is materialism in the US, they have an inadequate undestanding of the philosophy.

I didn’t want to, but you’re making me do it…
So: you would contend that all forms of Buddhism are by definition atheistic? And all Buddhists are atheists?

he was asked to pick a winner of a fight. i’d rather him give a cool 1 liner than just a name.
and maybe all he’s saying is that rampage is going to lose because of his mental state.
it may have been rude…but so is driving your car on the sidewalk….

Some big time words coming from a guy who just got dominated by Clay “gatekeeper” Guida. Guida is a good fighter but his task at hand is usually to seperate contenders from guys who just don’t have the ability to threaten for a title. I never liked Danzig even before tuf for his undeservingly smug attitude. This comments he made especially xmas time are a new low even for him! I was very happy to see Mach Sakuari wipe the canvas with him and equally so when Guida pounded on him. If you look at the quality of the opposition he defeated pre-tuf the list is disgusting! He fought so many cans and really never beat anybody in top 50! As unbelieveable as it sounds the combined record of his opponents he defeated is 143-124-7!!!You don’t belive me look it up. Only half of his 18 wins were over guys with winning records! And this guy is talking shit about Rampage what a joke! Where does he get off saying anything about a far more skilled and tons more popular fighter! He could say what he wants but he will NEVER win the LW title or even come close while Rampage is a threat to anyone who holds the 205 strap.

I’m curious what your opinion of Torres is in regards to his opponents’ records.
by Simco on Dec 25, 2008 12:49 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think you meant
When Guida layed on him. Because there was maybe a cumulative 30 seconds of pounding by Guida in that fight.
by skwirrl on Dec 25, 2008 5:22 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Clay is far from a gate keeper he is a guy who destroys hyped up fighters like Danzig, Guida is a beast as everyone that has faced him in the UFC has found out and Nate Diaz will be the next TUF winner to get exposed by The Carpenter and his relentless pace.
by Raker on Dec 25, 2008 1:42 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I think Nate should be able to handle Clay pretty well. The reach advantage, Nate’s use of judo, and his jiu jitsu game are custom made to finish Clay.
Guida’s only hope, as always, is to force a decision.

That sounds like a gatekeeper to me.

umm yea
You just defined a gatekeeper buddy! Someone who’s got game who is matched against fighters to see if they can potentially contend for a title or if they will fight cans and be fed to contenders.

Bullshit, Luke
Rampage has serious mental health issues, and the way the UFC and MMA fans coddle him is ridiculous. The fact he’s fighting less than six months after endangering that many lives and while still under indictment is bullshit.
Danzig is a pro. He’s been doing this a long fucking time in a lot of different orgs. He knows that athletes like him are on the ascendancy, and that the borderline personalities that used to populate the sport, of which Rampage is one, are on the way out.
In the future, we’ll continue to see more GSPs and fewer Tank Abbotts. If the former want to take a shot in print at the latter every now and again, that’s just speaking the truth in love.
by The Ghost of Spike Owen on Dec 25, 2008 4:30 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
BS x 2
Agreed.
How exactly is turning Rampage’s words against him a “cheap shot”? If Page is going to spout ridiculous shit about being a God, being God’s crusader, and all the other nonsense I’ve heard out of him, he’s going to open himself up to it. Trying to claim he can’t be held responsible for his comments because of “mental health issues” is silly. He’s on camera saying this stuff; Danzig isn’t taking shots at some dude in a mental institution that has no concept of what he’s saying.
It’s not a class move by Danzig, but to highlight his comments so more people see them and then claim an “ugly cheap shot” seems like pandering to me.

How in the world is Mac Danzig more of an athelete than Rampage Jackson? If Rampage lost every fight the rest of his career by round 1 KO he’d still have a more successful MMA career than Mac Danzig.

Danzig is a self-respecting professional.
He is, admittedly, not as naturally gifted or talented as Rampage is. Few are. That only goes to underscore how much Rampage’s search for god and father figures undermine his own gifts, and how that mindset is worthy and deserving of derision.
Mac is a pro. I have respect for pros. If Rampage ever begins to conduct himself in a professional way, I’ll respect him as such as well, instead of just standing in awe of his god-given talents, and how much of a waste he’s making of them.
Pros get the most out of their talents. ‘Page doesn’t. Danzig does.

It’s a shame that Danzig getting the most out of his talents means losing to gatekeepers.

Rampage started off as a wrestler with nothing else and has evolved into a top level 205 guy. Yes, he has personal problems, but he has accomplished a ton. He also moved to England to isolate himself from bad influences in LA, though that doesn’t count.
How does Danzig really make the most of his abilities in a way Rampage doesn’t? By going on TUF in sandbagging fashion and beating a bunch of nobodies to get special treatment upon debut he wouldn’t get otherwise?
by Michael Rome on Dec 26, 2008 2:54 AM EST up reply actions 1 recs
WAR WAND
and war Danzig for taking a dig at Page when not enough people have the balls to. I wouldn’t be surprised if he blames Aethists and Juanito for conspiring against him after this coming loss.
by skwirrl on Dec 25, 2008 5:24 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Exactly. I love Rampage, and I’ll be screaming for him to get the win but dont get all sensitive when another fighter calls him out over how damn weird and fragile he has been lately.
Danzig is always good at those one liners. I recall him coming up with other funny quotes on previous fight picks.
by Benicio on Dec 25, 2008 5:46 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Danzig’s comment was clearly super serious, so it definitely merits this super serious post. We certainly all can’t have a laugh at Rampage’s idiotic actions…

the "big mac" danzig cup runneth over
mac seems like the kinda guy to say some stuff like that and be the first to say hi to rampage when he see’s him. i think if u r not in the same weight class as a fighter u should not talk shit, cause u will never get to fight them to prove it. the guy reminds me of matt hughs won’t kill a roach but talks shit about someone he cant beat.fucking vegan bastard. can’t wait till they throw him to the wolves, lol

Before UFC 91 Mac made a pretty funny crack that Randy would beat Brock Lesnar cause he didn’t have a penis tattoed on his chest. I remember everyone found that pretty funny. Mac Danzig’s deadpan lines are hilarious, but sometimes his sense of humor does not come across well.

I wouldn’t qualify Danzig’s Lesnar joke as “hilarious”, seeing as I’ve heard it 1000 times.

I just read this and don’t consider it a cheap shot by any means. Can we stop taking offense to comments like this?
And when did Rampage get the “Hands off” treatment? After the crazy things he has pulled and said in the past it’s all of a sudden a “cheap shot” to make a comment like that one?
Come on..
