Quotes of the Day: Dana White and B.J. Penn, Point/Counter-Point

"Jiu-jitsu is created where the small man can beat the big man. I've been doing jiu-jitsu since I was 17 years old and that has always stuck in my head, throughout all the time and all the way until now. I just think it's just that basic ideology of martial arts and jiu-jitsu that's ingrained in me.
"That's my lifestyle, that I believe I have a chance. I know something's going to happen, the guy's going to make a mistake and I'm going to get that armlock, I'm going to get that choke and it will be done."
-- B.J. Penn talking to ESPN.com about moving up in weight/
"Is he tough enough to do it? Absolutely. Is he talented enough to go up there and do it? Absolutely. Does that mean he should do it? Absolutely not. He doesn't have the frame to carry that kind of weight and it just makes no sense."
-- Dana White rejecting the possibility of a B.J. Penn vs Anderson Silva fight.

To fight Silva? yes, 171 or the AC won’t let him fight. To fight GSP he has to make under 170 since its a title fight.
I should have specified to fight Anderson.
I have a feeling that weight isn’t much of a stretch for him.
Its a streach for him if he is in shape and there ain’t no way he has a shot at Silva if he is not in shape.
Isn’t this the same weight difference as there was between Randy and Brock?

Um, no?

Yes, Richard. The answer is ‘no’.
185-155 = 30 lbs (almost 20% of 155). The same difference between 265-235 would be a much smaller deal percentage-wise.

The question mark had to do with my confusion over why the question was even being asked.

It’s bigger but the weights relative to their size make a difference also.
If BJ is 175 healthy with no cut, which I bet is conservative, he would be fighting Anderson who will weigh roughly 200 fight time. 25lb difference at most.
Is it ideal? No. But that’s part of what makes the fight exciting is that these are two guys from two different weight classes.
What does Dana have against Silva fighting superfights?
Cote, and now leites cmon Dana put this guy against the greats. It’s what us fans want. I want superfights it’s the reason why everyone watches, to see who is the fighter on the planet, it’s the reason these guys fight
CMON MAAN!
BJ vs Silva would not be a superfight,
it would be super ass kicking. Silva has got to be 6 inches or more taller than him.
Not the 6 inches
alone, even thought it may be more. But Silva’s striking is something that BJ has never faced before & he is also a BJJ blackbelt.
Exactly what does BJ do
that will enable him to defeat Silva? I love BJ, and he is better than everyone in his division and probably quite a few in the next one. Silva owns his division, every one below it & probably a good portion of the one above him.
It breaks down like this, Dana has said that if GSP beats BJ then wins against Alves, GSP can get a shot at Anderson. If BJ beats GSP, then wins against Alves why not let him fight? He just kicked the asses of the guys Dana thinks are credible challengers.

Get a takedown, use his killer JJ to get dominant position, ground and pound, win by submission
BJ could beat Anderson. Maybe only 1 in 10 times but he definitely has the tools to do it.
Why are we even talking about BJ
moving up two weight classes to face Silva? I would not mind seeing GSP moving up maybe, but not BJ.
hm.. Lyoto Machida vs. BJ Penn… rings a bell?
hm.. Lyoto Machida vs. BJ Penn… rings a bell?Sure BJ lost, but he still has fought larger copetition. Its about being best in the world, if BJ can make the weight, you should allow it. I mean, Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Couture, Randy was outweighed by 50 pounds come fight time.
Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Couture, Randy was outweighed by 50 pounds come fight time.
Shhh!! Don’t mention the size difference, you’ll make them angry * looks around nervously *
After BJ beats GSP and Alves
the tide will turn. BJ will have shown what he can do and there will be no question that he can beat Silva, Dana will let it happen. BJ just has to prove himself.
As much as I love BJ,
I am not sure how exactly him beating GSP & Alves translates to him being able to beat Silva. I do not question his heart or talent, but it could be very ugly with Silva’s size & striking.
If he beats both in decisive fashion, it will change the dynamic. It may help to build up anticipation of a match up with Silva. This is 2 big fights down the road, many, many things can and will change. Silva did not look like the unbeatable god in his last fight, how will he look against Leites? All I’m trying to say is that trying to set this fight up right this second is silly, but if BJ does his job and wins big, Dana’s objections start to fade away.

I agree with you in principle
the idea of that matchup is intriguing ( a little). But Dana will never allow BJ to fight Silva if he beats GSP then Alves.
If guys were allowed to jump several weight classes whenever they felt like, there would be no point in weight classes. It can potentially leave a weight class in disarray. And it only makes it more confusing to the casual viewer. BJ wants to feed his ego right now, and he’s always been a bit flippant about his career. Dana’s gonna have a hard time keeping BJ happy, especially if he loses to GSP.
If BJ loses, then who cares? It only matters if he’s winning.

i think Dana white said that like a month ago and mmamania just posted it recently.. Unless Dana said that also in a separate interview.. Im not that sure.
http://weoweoweo.deviantart.com/
Dana added the bit about B.J. being tough enough to do it in the ESPN interview. He’s been saying he wouldn’t book the fight for a while.
I read the ESPN interview
and the only mention of Silva was the possibility of GSP facing him if he wins. Why is this being brought up for BJ?
I think you missed something
Here’s the graph leading into the Dana quote I used in the story:
White is doing all he can, however, to keep the 5-foot-9 Penn from setting his sights above 170 pounds, shooting down any talk that a Penn win could mean another step up to middleweight and his own date with Silva.
oh okay. Then what i read mustve been a separate interview a few weeks ago.. I kinda hope that IF BJ beats GSP easily, he gets a shot at silva.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should
And Dana’s motivation is clear – why do I want to diminish my worldbeater at 155 by letting him fuck around 30 pounds heavier?
When the weight classes are closer together, we’ll see people like BJ with three or more belts. Just not yet.
by Derek Suboticki on Dec 24, 2008 2:54 PM EST reply actions
BJ has neither the reach nor the chin to take on Anderson Silva. Remember, Silva is fairly close to HW before cutting to 180 – and has the arms and legs to go with it. BJ would have the devil’s own time trying to get close to Silva, much less do anything to him.
BJ is the king of the hill in his division. What he should do is stay there. Or – should he want to move to welterweight – he should do it like Silva did it when fighting in 205, that is NOT demanding a title match off the bat. Silva fought Irvin, not Griffin.

What do they call Lyoto Machida?
“The Ghost” because no one can touch him, they can’t lay a glove on him.
BJ not only got inside on Lyoto, he boxed him up pretty good.

“The Ghost” is a much better nickname than “The Dragon” (cf Red Grange)

fo Real
I mean seriously, think about it. Justin Eilers vs. Big Foot Silva, Eilers weighed in at 216, Big Foot (at the time) weighed in at 265. Outweighed by 50+ pounds come fight time.
I think BJ is a huge threat to defeat Anderson, they just dont want BJ to keep on going up in weight divisions making it more confusing for championships.
BJ Would only get this fight if he beat GSP and that would mean he might possess 3 belts, do you understand the nightmare it would become for one person to defend 3 belts, much less 2?
That's a reason to keep BJ from his opportunity?
If BJ wins then he screws everything up!! ZOMG!
by dualdiagnosis on Dec 24, 2008 4:28 PM EST up reply actions
I`m just wondering why no one seems to wanna mention that BJ looks like a BIG lightweight? Now, I could be wrong, but I think he looked like a giant against Sherk… and against Stevenson… and let`s not talk about Pulver.
How about BJ dominating the LW-division partly due to his size? I`m not saying that he`s not an excellent fighter, but I`m thinking “Swick” when I see him.

If someone makes the weight at 155,
that’s all that counts. If anyone else better than BJ could do it, nothing is stopping them. Do you think GSP could make it? Don’t think so.

although I started neutral...
all this Silva talk kinda has me rooting for GSP. He definitely has the ability to silence all of this “what if” talk. BJ should shut up about Silva until he deals with GSP.
its not like he goes around bragging to people that hey im gonna fight silva next! ..he was asked a question, he just answered. relax dude. Plus, its the blogs who make it seem like they have too much “talk” but thats cause we only see a quote and not the entire thing.

Is anybody asking GSP the same question?
I would be interested to read his response, although I imagine it would be something like, "After BJ, we can talk about that." I could be wrong (and probably am), and you’re right, the blogs usually highlight BJ’S quotes. Why do you think that is? And I’m generally pretty relaxed…dude.
