Will Forrest Griffin vs Rashad Evans Be the Worst Fight Ever?

Sherdog talks to the trainers of Rashad Evans and Forrest Griffin. From what Griffin coach Shawn Tompkins says, my fears of a boring dance-a-thon are confirmed:

“Obviously, we have to make sure Forrest’s hands are up nice and high and not get caught into a game where we chase Rashad around,” Tompkins said. “I think that’s really where Chuck went wrong. And so we have to be smart with that ’cause Forest has a bit of a habit of just wanting to fight so badly that he’ll fall into that. Make Rashad come to us and really just do what Forrest does, and that’s really make the fight as tough as possible, because he’s such a durable guy.”

I've never seen a boring Forrest Griffin fight.

I think he’s going to defend that belt like a rabid dog – and if he feels like he’s behind on the scorecards going into 4 or 5, we’ll see fireworks.

Remember how you weren’t mentioned on the Top 10 BE Staff Fuckups for ‘08? Well, if you really believe this fight is going to suck, I’d humbly beseech the writer of that post to hold voting open until New Year’s.

I think Griffin might try to push Rashad into the later rounds, but I doubt that journey is too boring. The first round, maybe that one is not so hot.

Did you know we are in high demand, Laura?

by Eugene Schelfaut on Dec 23, 2008 6:22 PM EST reply actions

This is probably going to be the most exiting fight of the year

And that’s saying something, especially with the quality of the fights on this card. I’m not usually one to shell out money for PPV’s, but I might make this a Christmas present to myself. I counted Forrest out against Rampage, but not this time. He won’t finish Rashad. If he stays outside and plays the jab game, mixes in those leg kicks that he’s becoming famous for, and keeps moving in a tight circle, he gets the decision. If Rashad gets him up against the cage, he’s going to go into his default wrestling mode, and go for the lay and pray.

Neither of the scenarios you describe sound like fun to me. I like definitive conclusions not point fights.
I’ll take Lyoto Machida or Yushin Okami over Forrest Griffin anyday. Those guys are methodical but its always clear who won their fights.

by Kid Nate on Dec 24, 2008 12:07 PM EST up reply actions

i think Evans will be more agressive in this fight. Griffin can’t crush a grape, so there isn’t as much need for caution as the Liddell fight.

by smoogy on Dec 23, 2008 6:35 PM EST reply actions

Agreed

Rashad took some shots from Liddell that I dont think Griffin can match. He’ll try to feel him out like he did Chuck in the 1st. Theres no way this won’t turn into a slugfest, hopefully ending with a KO victory for Evans.

by xFenixKnightx on Dec 23, 2008 6:39 PM EST up reply actions

Yes because if Rashad wins

Wand will BRUTALIZE him after he’s gone and tossed Page in the dumpster like a backstreet abortion for the 3rd time.

Please Wand and Rashad both win so we can see Wand absolutely Jardine, Shad sometime soon.

by skwirrl on Dec 23, 2008 6:55 PM EST up reply actions

Think about this!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Forrest took some shoots from Rampage that KO’ed Chuck!!!!!

by heard1 on Dec 23, 2008 10:41 PM EST up reply actions

Rashad is too damn cocky!!! I think

by heard1 on Dec 23, 2008 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

That’s the mentality that got Chuck knocked out. Before he KO’d Chuck, who honestly believed Evans had significant power in his hands?

by Carl P on Dec 23, 2008 6:41 PM EST up reply actions

I hope not! I expect it to be a hell of a fight. Forrest being all bloody and smiling, and Rashad being all Bruce Lee and Fred Sanford…

by mythbuster on Dec 23, 2008 6:45 PM EST reply actions

I don’t see this being a bad fight. I think it will be competitive and relatively action-packed.

I really hope Forrest wins so I get to see him and Wand in a slugfest for the title! (if he can get past Rampage of course)

by ANance on Dec 23, 2008 6:57 PM EST reply actions

Also I don't think it will be a HORRIBLE fight

just a meaningless one, because whether the belt changes hands now or not, it will change hands in the next fight.

by skwirrl on Dec 23, 2008 6:58 PM EST reply actions

Just a stupid comment...

Why because there’s never an unexpected outcome in MMA? Plus, no one can honestly say who the #1 contender is at LHW at the moment. Maybe it’s the winner of Wand/Rampage or maybe it’s the winner of Silva/Machida. Also, I’m a very very very firm believer that a CHAMPIONSHIP fight is not meaningless no matter who is involved. Think a little bit before you post.

This fight has more meaning BECAUSE there is no clear and decisive champion right now.

by Benicio on Dec 24, 2008 2:04 AM EST up reply actions

I just hope that Evans is more comfortable with his hands after the devastating KO of Liddell. Evans has good hands and every fight seems to get better… I just think he needs to throw more and get more comfortable.

by pr0cs on Dec 23, 2008 6:59 PM EST reply actions

Seriously?

Pretty extreme title.. Worst fight ever? Try fuckin Mir vs Christianson… This fight will undoubtedly be good, regardless of how they approach it. And if it’s marginally disappointing, we have a whole card to fall back on.

Quarry vs Starnes rank anywhere?

Shamrock vs Severn 1?

by The_Vig on Dec 23, 2008 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

When I first saw it I was too young to be angry at how horrible it was. Wasn’t even sure what I was watching, for the most part.. Mir/Christianson happened when I was like fuckin 24.

by Blackout612 on Dec 23, 2008 8:39 PM EST up reply actions

I’m 23. Go ahead and feel old :-)

by Derek Suboticki on Dec 23, 2008 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, yeah

I’m 27, but I’m not one of those people that shits the bed every time the calendar turns over. I’ll start feeling old when Horodecki ceases to look like a six year old.

Kimo vs Severn at PRIDE 1

Much worse than even the Shamrock vs Severn rematch at UFC 9.

by Kid Nate on Dec 24, 2008 12:39 AM EST up reply actions

To be honest...

..I didn’t even pay attention for the duration of that fight. I suppose a fight can only be so bad to qualify for me, because I’ll stop watching. Who knows why I watched the whole Mir/Christianson debacle? It was truly horrifying..

by Blackout612 on Dec 23, 2008 8:38 PM EST up reply actions

Quarry vs Starnes was one of the worst fights to watch, but nobody would have said that before the fight took place.

by midwestbred on Dec 24, 2008 1:43 AM EST up reply actions

can't a blogger use hyperbole?

the phrase “worst X ever” is such a cliche i didn’t even think about the literal meaning, I guess I should’ve titled it “Will Griffin vs Evans be TEH SUCK?”

by Kid Nate on Dec 24, 2008 5:27 PM EST up reply actions

Yes

That would have been more diplomatic.

Diego Sanchez vs. Josh Koscheck II

Need I say more? I am pretty sure nothing will ever top that.

by "Mr. NC-17" on Dec 23, 2008 7:55 PM EST reply actions

arlovski/sylvia 3? this match-up has alot of competition for “worst ever”. i dont see it being a boring fight at all. it’s just not as sexy a some people want, it to be b/c basically it has 2 former tuf winners and no former pride standouts so they see it as not worthy.

by bdw on Dec 23, 2008 8:37 PM EST up reply actions

Worst ever?!?!??!?!??!?!

Kid Nate (who wrote this article) has obviously never been exposed to such fights as “the most tactical fight in UFC history*” Dan Severn v Ken Shamrock or “lets watch two fat guys hold on to a fence**” Scott Ferrozzo vs Tank Abbott!!!!
Or if he is lucky has had his mind wiped Men in Black style…in which case I envy you.

*Actual quote from Den Severn

**My quote and yes I know they can both beat me up – but still

by Takashi Miike Myers on Dec 24, 2008 12:58 AM EST reply actions

Au Contraire

I watched Severn vs Shamrock 2 live on PPV. It was effing horrible.
I saw every UFC ppv from UFC 6 to UFC 19 or whenever they went off PPV and caught the two they had in Kennard Louisiana live — I think that was UFC 17 and 19.
Don’t challenge my old school credentials.
I’m almost 40 for god’s sakes!

I am over half way to 40 myself, don’t feel bad.

Kid Nate’s an old man. His handle of “Kid Nate” is meant to be ironic.

Fair to Ask

Based off Forrest’s history of taking fights to cards and Evans history of . . . well boring fights it at least needs to be asked.

I agree with the above comments. Forrest fights tend to end with a decision but they are never boring. I see Forrest out hustling the sometimes lazy Evans for a decisive decision, maybe the fight will bring a few good moments.

by bignerd on Dec 24, 2008 2:55 AM EST reply actions

Rashad's History of boring fights?

Tuf Finale 2 was a slugfest where he dropped IMes repeatedly… He pounded lambert out… headkicked salmon to hell… Knocked Chuck Out stupid…

Even his fights vs. Tito and Bisping weren’t that bad… If tito hadn’t grabbed the fence so many times Shad would’ve added a few more takedowns/slams to that fight as well…

by Loot on Dec 24, 2008 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

The guy who beats machida will be the worst fight ever…

because in order to beat him you have to be disciplined enough to put on the most un-engaging fight of your career.

by mmalogic on Dec 24, 2008 9:47 AM EST reply actions

True

I like Machida but he’s so damn good at countering you have to make HIM engage and that just doesn’t happen.

by skwirrl on Dec 24, 2008 8:38 PM EST up reply actions

There’s been so many truly awful fights that I can barely remember them all. Ferrozzo/Tank, Shamrock/Severn II, Severn/Kimo, Shamrock/Taktarov, Gracie/Severn, Bustamante/Erikson, Renzo/Kikuta…no way its as bad as any of those.

by D.Capitated on Dec 24, 2008 10:34 AM EST reply actions

Gracie vs Severn? Are you talking about UFC 4? I beg to differ my friend. It wasn’t that exciting minute to minute, but the ending (except on the PPV which cut it off) was totally thrilling. I loved watching Royce bust out the first triangle choke I’d ever seen.

by Kid Nate on Dec 24, 2008 12:11 PM EST up reply actions

Right on man!

I can still remember that fight in my head. That was a freaking 30 minute war that I could not take my eyes off of.

by dnevil001 on Dec 24, 2008 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

My Brothers and I tried for hours to mimick

that triangle & could not for the life of us figure out how in the hell it worked.

I can’t wait for this card. I think this fight is gonna be awsome, how many boring fights has forrest been in, none. Rashard is not just a wrestler anymore he is finishing fights. It’s gonna be a war!

by WARMMA on Dec 24, 2008 1:05 PM EST reply actions

Griffin vs Ramirez was awful and Griffin vs Bonnar 2 wasn’t all that either.
Griffin fights to win on points, not to get a KO or a clearly dominant win.
