"We'd like him to become a pillar of Japanese MMA." - Tanigawa, who needs Ishii when you have pillars like Hong Man Choi and Semmy Schilt?
"I'm a white belt in MMA." - Ishii
"I plan to go next March for training at American Top Team." - Ishii, too bad he doesn't go train with Team Quest and Sokoudjou and completely remove judo from his MMA game!
UNLEASHED THE CAGED DOGS IN...A CAGE?
"This fight goes back. This fight goes way back." - Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton Jackson, on the third fight with Former Pride Middleweight Champion Wanderlei Silva. (UFC Video Vault)

"He says it’s not important, but c’mon, let’s be serious. He was unbeatable, like, five years, six years in Sambo, and he’s not beatable in MMA." - Arlovski, he's beatable if you cut him open with an illegal blow in a poorly formated tournament, actually.
"For me, it’s really hard to believe that he doesn’t care about it. Of course he cares." - Arlovski
YOU MEAN TO TELL ME IT'S HARD TO INSURE A BUNCH OF DUDES BEATING EACH OTHER UP?

Great job as always.
I liked these two, if you don’t mind :)
"I want to show Wanderlei that nobody is scared of him – he’s not in Pride anymore – he’s in the UFC. He’s not the man of Pride anymore – he ain’t even the man in the UFC." – Rampage (the sun)
"I will attack him – that’s my best defence in this fight. I will attack him and take him out. … I want to beat him so bad." – Big Nog on Mir (the sun)
Good quotes but...
It seems like all this “This Week in Quotes” shenanigans are just a disection of recent interviews, split up into sentances, and have personal comments applied to them. A little too carbon-copy.
Let’s pretend I didn’t spell two easy words wrong.

Isn't that the point...
This week in quotes gives us the interesting bits from interviews that not everyone may have read.

Unlelss your being funny?
That’s the point. Mikey goes through interviews (or writes them as he reads them) and puts the best bits of the week up. I know I enjoy reading them.
I'm really...
hoping this is a joke and you’re just hoping for more quotes to be made up and someone to be threatened with a lawsuit.
Quotes do tend to come from interviews…

I understand all of that. My point is simply that many of these quotes are just sliced up interviews. It’s redundant, especially since we’ve all read them on every site before, mostly this one.

uhm..
Its hard to generalize for all the people here.. Like what Patrick said above, not all have read, watched or heard those interviews.. and it (This week in quotes) is a nice summary of what went on for the whole week with Mike’s amusing one liners as a short commentary.. I think its a great post for people who only has a day in a week, if there is such a person in here, to check up whats going on in the MMA world. all in one article.
I suppose you’re right. I’m just an elitist blog reader, I guess.

“"It’s unfortunate that the man with the Japanese MMA world on his shoulders is going abroad.” – FEG President Sadaharu Tanigawa, uttering what is probably a very stern condemnation of Ishii in Japanese culture. (Sherdog)"
Are you joking? You couldn’t possibly think thats a “very stern condemnation”, right?
I’m not sure, but I think that the Japanese have a much greater sense of nationalism than Americans do and thus accusing a fighter of betraying Japanese MMA might be pretty serious. I suppose Dana White would have handled his condemnation a bit differently were he in the same position.

He isn’t condemning Ishii or suggesting he betrayed Japanese MMA. All he is saying is that it would be a bummer if he went to UFC, which is more or less “promoter talk”. Obviously FEG is still in the running to snag Ishii.
I’m kind of amazed, blogs like this one are actually playing Ishii’s game even more willingly than the Japanese pro wrestling/MMA media
Japanese culture is far more subtle than US culture. That quote is the same as Dana White saying “fuck him, we give him an opportunity and he treats us like this.” It’s all in the cultural context.
Nah, you’re way off. This is more or less kayfabe, Tanigawa is trying to make it sound like all hope is lost for Ishii signing with FEG, when in fact that still remains the most likely scenario.
If you’re right (and I have no way to know if you are), I appreciate you giving us that context.

Yeah, it’s not so much condemnation as it’s goading. Group-dynamics being as paramount as they are in Japan, Tanigawa is trying to remind Ishii who he is and who he should be running with at the end of the day.
What’s missing from this entry of TWIQ is what Tanigawa says after how bummed everyone is that Ishii is wanting to go abroad. He goes on to mention Ishii “having a destiny”—that fighting in Japan is “expected of him.” I think that gives all the context needed to the quote above.
The weight of that kind of expectation is heavy. In Japan, the realization of obligation to the people around you (since no man is an island, especially here) and the fulfillment of that obligation is integral to being a socially functional adult in Japan.
