WEC 37 Weigh-In Results
Via Sherdog:
Miguel Torres (134) vs. Manny Tapia (134)
Wagnney Fabiano (146) vs. Akitoshi Tamura (145)
Brian Bowles (135) vs. Will Ribeiro (136)
Joseph Benavidez (135) vs. Danny Martinez (136)
Justin Haskins (169) vs. Johny Hendricks (171)
Ricardo Barros (205) vs. Mark Munoz (205)
Diego Nunes (146) vs. Cole Province (146)
Alex Karalexis (156) vs. Bart Palaszewski (155)
Cub Swanson (145) vs. Hiroyuki Takaya (146)
Shane Roller (156) vs. Mike Budnik (155)
And MMAWeekly reports on the non-fireworks from the evening's main eventers:
"I'm ready to rock," Tapia said. "I'm healthy. Mentally, I'm ready."
"It's a fight," Tapia said. "You just go out there and fight. I'm ready."
. . .
Typical of his predominantly reserved demeanor, Torres said he is focused on simply performing up to his own expectations.
"My main motivation is to go out there and do what I came to do," Torres said. "Go out there and fight a hard fight."
Thankfully there's not much need for verbal sparring when you've got a fight this good.

This should be another home run show from WEC. I just hope the product remains at a similarly high level now that Scott Adams is no longer booking the shows.

Its a nice matchup, but success will be measured by the Versus rating, and its unlikely to deviate from the mediocre showings since Faber vs. Pulver 1.
I’d like to think the future is bright for the WEC, but right now it seems like they might not even have a TV deal for much longer.

Despite how quality this event is, there is positively no buzz for it whatsoever. I expect the ratings to be dismal.

Any idea on the term of the WEC/Versus agreement?

Luke, do you think there’s any chance Zuffa tries to find the WEC another home (or move it to Spike?) when the deal with Versus runs out? Zuffa seems to rewards loyalty, and I think Versus has done a good job handling MMA.

lol
Zuffa rewards loyalty, sure, but they aren’t in a position to dictate terms with TV partners when WEC is pulling in such mediocre ratings. If anything, the signs point to Versus being unhappy with the status quo. Outside of Urijah Faber and Jens Pulver, none of the WEC names seem to have caught on with audiences. And even when both of them are on a card in seperate bouts, they can’t seem to make anything happen.

Well, Versus agreed to air 8 live events as well as x number of new Wrekcage episodes in 2009, so I’d suspect that there is very little risk of WEC being removed from the station next year.

And no one had trouble making weight.
That seems like a rarity nowadays for some reason.
Should be an excellent card, though.

WEC fighters, particularly their champs, seem to stay focused over long periods of success. maybe it’s their lack of media attention/sponsor money that keeps their champions hungry.
I mean, look what happened to Faber. That may have been a case of him reading his headlines and believing the hype.
Anyway, I just feel like you never here a lot of trash talk, and I haven’t heard of any big contract disputes coming from the WEC. These guys stay hungry.

I heart WEC
This looks like a great card for hard cores. However, I agree there is absolutely zero buzz. Anbody know anything about how ratings are measured these days. Do you still need an arbitron box and log what you watch or has that been updated?

Ya’ll are ragging way to hard on WEC for its ratings.
VS feels the need to do press releases when college football gets a 1.0 rating in their channel. ESPN gets twice that for their games.
VS is a low ratings channel. Anything on VS is going to get half what it would get on a better channel. I really doubt their deal is in any danger, since .5 is fairly solid for them.

I am so pissed that TSN switched fight and is airing it on Saturday instead. Fucking travesty.
Instead I get to watch NHL Ottawa vs Atlanta. bleh.
I’ll have to get the fight on Thursday from the usual places.. this is why Zuffa needs to get the WEC on a more prolific station.

Hmm, they changed it again.
Well I hope they keep it on, I can PVR the TUF show and watch this WEC event.
Thanks for the update, I would have likely not checked again.

Attn Spike!
Please can TNA and get WEC instead. UFC and WEC on Spike would be awesome and sooo much better for WEC.
BTW, I don’t see how Gina is gonna get that many people to tune into Versus. Not that many people have that channel. I can only get it with one of the top packages on Dish.

It is on my fairly basic package...
for DirecTV and was at my old place on Comcast as well. I’m surprised to hear that it isn’t easily available for anyone with satellite or cable

You know what?
You’re 100% correct. I was talking about Versus HD. Forgot SD Versus was on the cheaper packages. Sorry, Ive turned into somewhat of an HD whore. I order all UFCs in HD now. Oscar DLJ/Pacman? $65.00 for HD. Insane but my friends are ptching in. Watching fights and sports in general on 58" Samsung HDTV with surround sound is fricken sweet! Theres no going back now….

Ah...
yeah…I’m living in the dark ages where people don’t own HD TV’s

Torres looks dry.
Wonder how long he can make the weight?
