Please forgive the late posting of the November meta-rankings. My family Thanksgiving vacation ate a week of the month and Comcast's continuing failure to get the internet set up at my new apartment did the rest.

Lots of changes in the rankings from October and several big big matchups coming up too. The perenially overrated Takanori Gomi is finally falling to #7, ironically after a questionable decision loss to #23 Sergey Golyaev. Gomi will nevertheless fight #19 Satoru Kitaoka at the January WVR/Sengoku event for their lightweight belt. If Kitaoka wins, expect him to continue to rise in the rankings, but a Gomi win shouldn't do much for Takanori. I will be astonished if Goyaev remains ranked in the coming months.

The people booking the matches for K-1's NYE event must be reading the Meta-rankings because the NYE matches between #2 Eddie Alvarez and #3 Shinya Aoki and #5 Joachim Hansen vs #6 Gesias "JZ" Calvancante are pretty ideal and will ideally set up a springtime match between the winners. If the fights come to satisfying conclusions we should have a good handle on the pecking order in the DREAM/K-1 organization.

Meanwhile on the UFC side, #4 Sean Sherk's win over #22 (and former #13) Tyson Griffin seems to have finally won Sherk some long-overdue recognition from the rankers. Its too bad that he underperformed so badly against #1 B.J. Penn. There's no demand for a Sherk-Penn rematch.

I expected #8 Kenny Florian to get more of a bump from pwning #14 Joe Stevenson but I think the rankings are not yet reflecting that win fully. If B.J. beats GSP and takes the welterweight belt, I wouldn't be surprised to see a Sherk vs Florian rematch for the vacant lightweight belt.

It would be an ironic turn of events for the UFC 155lb class to come full circle after such an effort to build the division. The difference between a Sherk/Florian title match in 2009 from their 2006 title fight will be that few will question the two have earned the right to fight for one of the most prestigious belts in MMA.

If B.J. loses to GSP, there's no telling how things will go. I'd say there's a good chance he returns to lightweight and breaks KenFlo's spirit the way he did JoeDaddy's.

Richard has added some very cool charts, including the standings of each fighter in the top 25 against top 10 and top 25 competition. Thanks Richard!

NOTE: The Meta-Rankings are not the subjective opinion of the BloodyElbow team, but rather a compilation of the rankings of over twenty leading MMA web sites. It is our opinion that these are the most informative MMA rankings anywhere.

Star-divide

Be_meta_lw_chart_1_november_medium
Be_meta_lw_chart_2_november_medium
Be_meta_lw_standings_november_medium

Based on the premise that opinions are like assholes, everybody has one and they all stink, instead of putting up our own subjective fighter rankings, we compile and average the rankings of every source we could find online.

The goal is to show how the MMA community rates the fighters, not to bore you with our opinions.

Be sure and look at the points, they're a much more telling number than the ranking. There's clearly a huge gulf between the top 9 fighters and those that follow.

A total of 45 fighters were ranked in the top 25 by one source or another. For reasons of sanity I only track the top 25 most highly rated fighters.

25 points are awarded for a first place ranking, 16 for a 10th place ranking, 1 for a 25th place ranking. A formula is used to "normalize" the data so all fighters are awarded points from those lists that do not include a full 25 fighters. Each site consulted awards a total of 325 points. Fuller explanation below.

Rankings were compiled from the following sites: MMA Fighting, MMA-ELO, FC Fighter, Tagg RadioMMA Weekly, Sherdog, Cage Potato, FightMatrixMMA Playground, HDNet/Inside MMA, VT/MMA (Japanese), Houston Chronicle Brawl Sports, Total MMA, FightMagazine, MMA Ratings, WAMMA, MMA EQ, Five Ounces of Pain, MMA News, Inside Fighting, MMA 4 Real, and MMA Blogger.

The normalization scheme as explained by JCS of FightMatrix  is here:

The "normalization number" (new name) would be:

120
divided by
(Total Fighters Found in Any List minus 10)

Every fighter found somewhere else, but on a Top 10 list would be assigned this number.

The "normalization" number would not apply to a fighter not found on a Top 25 list. They would simply get 0.

So the process would be:

Do all of the Top 25 lists first, #1 = 25, #2 = 24…. #24 = 2, #25 = 1
Do all of the Top 10 lists, same scoring structure.. stops at #10 = 16

Figure out that normalization variable.

Fill in the normalization variable to all fighters not found in the Top 10 lists, but found elsewhere.

Do your totals and rank.

Is there a reason

to assume that BJ would vacate the LW title if he wins the WW one?

by Razreshat on Dec 2, 2008 1:01 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

BJ has said openly that he doesn’t care about fighting Florian. I would expect a third bout with Hughes or GSP long before that fight happens.

Kenflo gets no love for beating Joe Daddy? Crazy.

The standings are against all competitors and not just other Lightweights? Hrmmm.

The first standings are all their fights in the last three years. The second standings are just those against other current top 25 lightweights and the third standings are just against current top 25 lightweights.

I’d put Florian at #2. He’s that good.

greg maynard 13? up from 21 ? wowzers

i am still stunned gomi is ranked as high as he is… people just won’t let go..

by dbcb on Dec 2, 2008 1:43 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah I had to double check the numbers on that. Still have no reason why he jumped so much.

by Kid Nate on Dec 2, 2008 1:46 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well he beat Edgar who has a decent spot so people would feel the need to rank him above Edgar.

by bigweeze on Dec 2, 2008 3:31 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Gomi has to be one of the Top-5 most overrated fighters today. I think Florian would maul him.

by RollinOnShabbos on Dec 2, 2008 2:06 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Eh, some of these sites I do worry about how they are formulating their rankings.

MMA Elo has BJ at #5!, and Sherk at #3 who he killed
Also MMAVT has K-Flo at #22 ?? which may help to explain his low rating, and Patricio Freire at #13. You have to be kidding me.

To say that even prior to the Joe-Daddy fight that K-Flo isn’t even top 20 is mind boggling. Overall, the laws of statistics evens out the picture and you get a solid understanding about how each fighter is perceived by the MMA community

by Sokonojudo on Dec 2, 2008 1:43 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

MMA Elo: http://www.mma-elo.com/about_system.php

As for MMA VT, how they determine their rankings is anyone’s guess.

by Richard Wade on Dec 2, 2008 2:14 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Elo system is built mainly on points. If you beat higher ranked fighters you get more points. Unfortunately, formulas are also manipulating. If you beat 5 top 25 fighters you get a lot of points but it does not necessarily mean you are better than a fighter who is 1-1 against the top 3 fighters.

K-Flo is so high because he has rattled off 6 wins in a row earning 40+ points (60 for Huerta and Dok. Mishida each) in each fight. BJ earned 63 against Sherk, 60 for Stevenson and 39 for Pulver. A calculator is never wrong it just has operator error.

I wish the DREAM and UFC guys could mix it up a little

generally couldn’t agree more but I’d be interested to hear your specific disagreements.
Or are you the inevitable reader who doesn’t understand that the Meta-rankings are a compilation averaging over two dozen sites’ rankings.

by Kid Nate on Dec 2, 2008 2:08 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I understand how the Meta-rankings work. What I do not understand is this MMA Elo’s rankings
1)KenFlo
2)Aoki
3)Sherk
4)Gomi
5)Penn

Penn is being punished points-wise because he fights at a variety of weight classes and rather infrequently compared the other top lightweights.

as well as common sense and reason

Can we vote MMA ELO off the island like Survivor? They haven’t put Jorge Gurgel at #1 yet so they have still managed to retain a bit of sanity. ELO belongs with Chess not MMA.

by Sokonojudo on Dec 2, 2008 2:53 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   1 recs

even though I don’t like watching him fight, I am glad sherk is getting his due finally. His strength and wrestling would give ANY LW a problem other than Penn.

by dbcb on Dec 2, 2008 2:52 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree, except I do like watching him fight. His fight with Hermes Franca was one I really enjoyed. It was a little dry maybe, but the contrast in approaches between Franca the dangerous risk taker looking for the quick finish via guillotine or knee to the face and Sherk’s relentless control game was really entertaining to me. Franca came so close at least 3 times and Sherk never let up.

by Kid Nate on Dec 2, 2008 3:02 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Don't go taking all the blame Nate...

as I’ve said in other posts…Nate tapped me to help get these ratings up last week but there were issues with my access to a computer so I wasn’t able to get it done. So I get some blame as well on the lateness of the rankings.

Bj Penn #1 absolutely..some of these are arguable either way, but Gomi is overrated and above Kenflo?? Wow…..These rankings are like the BCS

by teamtig32 on Dec 2, 2008 5:20 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Thank you Nate!

I have to admit that I am creepy obsessed with meta-rankings. I won’t go into detail about my obsession with creating my own computer rankings that I spend an unnecessary amount of time one, BUT… I do get excited when you release these each month. I was on the freaking edge of my seat all week wondering what was going on. Hope you had a great holiday – looking forward to the rest of the divisions!

If you really can’t wait, Nate links to the sites we get the rankings from and the methodology is explained at the bottom of each post. You could put them together yourself.

by Richard Wade on Dec 2, 2008 6:07 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Rankings

are something people put way too much importance into.A lot of the fighters I’ve liked watching over the years weren’t on many top 10 lists. It’s a waste of time debating rankings they are all subjective.I mean people are getting all worked up over where Gomi is ranked. So what he’s a great fighter so what if he’s #7,8,9,or 20.It doesn’t matter.

by tylerdurden1 on Dec 2, 2008 7:57 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I pretty much agree but I also find they’re a useful way to create some organization out of the chaos that is MMA.

by Kid Nate on Dec 3, 2008 10:30 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I can’t understand Tyson ranked under Nate Diaz. Tyson’s competition has been WAY stronger than that of Diaz.

by Lynchman on Dec 2, 2008 7:58 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They’re separated by only one point.

by Richard Wade on Dec 2, 2008 8:16 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It annoys me how non-UFC fighters always seem to get ranked higher. Aoki number 3? Give me a break the guy is built like my grandma, he is simply not powerful enough to hang with Edgar, Griffin, Sherk, Maynard etc. He would get outmuscled very badly!

by swiftman on Dec 2, 2008 11:51 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Most rankings are based on accomplishments, not evaluation of skills.

by Tonley on Dec 3, 2008 12:27 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

tapping out japanese cans should not count as accomplishments. Griffin would destroy him and he is ranked 20 positions below, so what is the point of the rankings? Plus his bouts wearing his grippy pants should not be counted (ie all of them)

by swiftman on Dec 3, 2008 1:44 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree that a lot of UFC fighters don’t get a lot of credit in LW rankings but to sum up Aoki’s career as subbing cans is just short-sighted.

Hansen is a can?
Caol Uno is a can?
JZ is a can?

Griffin would destroy him

And you know this for sure how?

by Tonley on Dec 3, 2008 1:54 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sorry I should have justified that statement. Dont get me wrong, I love seeing slick BJJ, but in my opinion I dont think he could hang with any of the UFC LWs. The reason behind this is that his wrestling is ordinary so he would have to fight those guys standing. Watching Sherk and Griffin throw down recently it is unlikely he would be able to KO either of them. And I doubt he would get far pulling guard in the UFC as well, you might win some fights that way but its a recipie for getting your head beaten in if that is your strategy every fight.

Plus it seems to me wearing his special pants is the same as a striker using harder gloves?

I sound a bit like a hater but i actually genuinly enjoy watching the guy fight, just do not think he should be top 10.

by swiftman on Dec 3, 2008 2:04 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I actually agree....

I think any of the wrestling LW (griffen, sherk, stevenson, edgar, maynard, ectect) would maul a lot of those japanese guys similiar to aoki.

but it is what it is. and people love their “anyone other than the ufc” guys so its not even worth bringing up these days

and his special pants are bull shit

by dbcb on Dec 3, 2008 5:48 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Dude its not like those pants have glue on them or anything.

by zeroword on Dec 4, 2008 11:09 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They are clearly worn to help him work the rubber guard. Why cant strikers have special equipment to help them? Rock hard shin pads? Brass knuckles under gloves?

It should be a level playing field

by swiftman on Dec 4, 2008 8:52 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Now you are talking out of your ass. It’s Japan, guys can wear gi’s and wrestler’s can wear shoes it doesn’t matter because it is a double edged sword. Yes it may give him a better grip but it gives his opponents a better grip on his legs too.

You ever stop to think that the gloves are an advantage for the striker and a disadvantage for the grappler?

by zeroword on Dec 5, 2008 2:49 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I understand its legal to wear that sh_t over there, thats not the issue. But when you start ranking this guy over genuine fighters thanks in no small way to his special accessories thats really dumb.

You dont actually think he would beat Griffin with them do you? How close was Griffin to be subbed by Marcus Aurelio? Not even close dude, I dont care how good Aoki is Griffin will be too big and too strong.

by swiftman on Dec 5, 2008 9:19 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs
