Quote of the Day: Deadspin Shines Again

"I'm not sure what in Levens' background may have led him to this, but with the MMA we're not exactly dealing with your typical athlete. Another fighter at the Affliction event, Sergei "The Pit Bull" Arlovsky, is featured on his web site with vampire fangs."

-- Rick Chandler, Associate Editor of Deadspin.com. Emphasis mine. In fairness to Chandler, he treated the Levens' story with the grace and maturity it requires, although I have no idea what the atmospherics of mouthpieces has to do with Levens' personal struggles with depression and mental illness.

For those who are regular readers of BE, Rick Chandler should be a familiar figure (here and here and here).

Why even bother with that garbage site?

Yeah

I was gonna say, is deadspin an important site somewhere that you should care?

I remember the Irvin debacle, and the idiots he has for readers (the commenters there). I think his irrelevance has hit its peak.

To be honest, in the sports blogging world there is no bigger site than Deadspin. Perhaps that won’t be the case for much longer.

by Luke Thomas on Dec 18, 2008 11:31 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Perhaps? You mean to say ‘hopefully’.

by Discman2 on Dec 18, 2008 11:37 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

aah ok

Didn’t realize that. I never heard of them except here.

Well then, heres to wishing them a speedy demise, or a better staff.

They had better staff...

and then their main guy left and it turned into much more of the perez hilton of sports blogs rather than somewhere that was important while still being funny.

Who’s this Sergei Arlovsky? Is he the guy that fought Jim Sylvio for the ZFC title?

" but with the MMA we're not exactly dealing with your typical athlete "

I like how this line makes it seem like justification for the actions(if it is murder/suicide). As if being a Mixed Martial Artist means that you are unstable, erratic, and prone to unpredictable behavior. I know that these athletes are different than others in that they willingly engage in an extremely violent sport but that doesn’t mean they are more likely to commit murder suicide! Being a mental health counselor I know that depression effects people in all walks of life but some readers might think, “Oh my god that’s terrible. Oh but he was a MMA guy so you know what that means. He was really crazy.” That’s a stigma that is hard to shed.

wow

is there a word for stupidly extending a petty flap over semantics with another website to the point where it makes your regular readers want to vomit? I’ve never read deadspin, but I have read BE for the last, I don’t know, since it was FOUNDED? And this is some tiresome, tiresome shit to keep seeing.

you’re upset that this was posted here as a “Quote of the Day?” Or you’re upset with Deadspin for posting it to begin with?

Deadspin

Actually, to those of you who aren’t privy to Deadspin.com, it is one of the most popular sports blogs on the Internet, ranking very high on the Technorati 100. Why does that matter here?

It’s very odd that Chandler links Andrei’s website… then manages to fuck up his name in the actual posting. Maybe he had Russian names on his mind as Sergei and Andrei are probably very popular, but this seems like an amateur mistake to me. Being one of the most popular sites on web should be enough for him to look over his posts for mistakes.

I don’t think this post is worth ripping on him for a small error on his part though.

by Leland Roling on Dec 18, 2008 11:53 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I am not ripping on the “name” mistake. I am ripping on stigmatizing mixed martial artists as unstable, unpredictable and erratic athletes prone to murder/suicide.

Get used to it. It’s only going to get worse as other media outlets pick this up. Wait until Fox News gets a hold of this, or Bill O’Reilly features a segment on it.

by Leland Roling on Dec 18, 2008 11:59 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i hope it stays under the radar. If not we will have to flood the net with photos of mixed martial artists doing oil paintings and reading books in the park in order to counter spin. i joke but its really not funny.

I guarantee you that Fox News will pick this up and twist it along with other major media outlets. It’s along the lines of the Benoit case without the steroids… yet. I’m sure some toxicology reports will end up creating a huge fiasco.

I’ll make this brief, I’ve never heard of deadspin.com before coming here. I don’t exactly facebook, myspace or even twitter as I have a life offline. But as far as MMA sites, this site is the pinnacle of information.

I look forward to posting here more.

1st-This is sad news for the human race, just as it is in any instance similar to this.

2nd-This occurs on a regular basis. Quite frankly, how many times have we seen it happen with mma fighters or any pro athletes? I would say it is much more prevalent in “everyday” jobs, like retail, food service, office workers, etc… why try and link it to the guy’s career when there clearly is no pattern involved?

3rd-Any attempt to sensationalize stories like this or the Benoit situation, for examples, is absolutely despicable. Any person who does this SHOULD be called out for it.

4th-I do spend a lot of time on the net, as my job involves a lot of free time in front of a computer. I have heard of Deadspin, but never visited it. Every time I have heard of it, it has involved some negative connotation. I do not intend to ever visit their site.

5th-Thanks to sites like BE, who report these stories with dignity and to posters who recognize how to comment on them.

Just to clarify, I’m saying, it is very distasteful for anyone to use a isolated tragedy like this, as a platform for some type of derogatory stance on the sport of MMA.

Maybe some clarification should be pushed into this post as to what Deadspin entails.

It’s almost like a Fightlinker, but for general sporting news. They make humor postings based on sports news, etc.

If it were an actual news outlet, I’d be a bit surprised, but coming from Deadspin.com, doesn’t surprise me one bit as they do nothing but crack jokes at every athlete’s expense.

by Leland Roling on Dec 18, 2008 12:02 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

They do...

focus more on long standing inside jokes and you will be treated like crap if you don’t “get” the jokes on your own. They also look to trash everyone which I think is much worse than Fightlinker which looks to just poke fun at people/organizations without (generally) being as harmful as Deadspin has been in the past.

Contributing Editor - BloodyElbow.com - SBNation's mixed martial arts headquarters.

by Brent Brookhouse on Dec 18, 2008 12:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, I’ve noticed that’s how Deadspin works and it almost seems like a small high school of commentors drive the site. All the inside jokes and comments are nothing more than one-liners on any subject.

I do agree with you, Brent. Fightlinker definitely isn’t worse, and I do enjoy what Ryan and Jake write from time to time. I don’t generally believe they want to trash everyone. Even at moments, I’m generally prone to bashing a fighter or organization (i.e. UFC signing Neil Grove), but Deadspin takes this to a new height.

been my problem with them. They seem like their ultimate moment would be a story they write leading to an athlete losing their job or destroying their life in some other way.

The site reveled in Jason Giambi’s “pornstache” and the scandals of Michael Vick and Plaxico Burress. A-Rod’s little affair was also beaten like a dead horse. It’s amazing that people eat that stuff up.

Yes. I should have clarified that this was not just pointed towards deadspin, but also any sit e reporting, like ESPN, which regularly allows people to post ridiculous comments to their articles.

It should be noted that Deadspin is somewhat on the verge of a collapse anyways. I frequently read Lifehacker and Consumerist, great blogs by Gawker Media, and Valleywag, decent insider blog on Silicon Valley (I’m in I.T.), and they have felt cuts due to the economy.

Deadspin seems to have been untouched, which was explained that Gawker wasn’t cutting their top revenue making blogs. Deadspin must be one of them, which is unfortunate because the other blogs I mentioned had cuts and they have fantastic information.

Rampant Ignorance

There is so much misinformation born of ignorance that you can fully envelope yourself in depression if you read how MMA is depicted by all other media outlets. Not sure about most of you guys, but I’ve been explaining how MMA isn’t “Ultimate Fighting”, and how it actually combines several Olympic sports into 1, to my friends and family for about 10 years now, and it doesn’t seem to have gotten any better.

There’s still such a stigma about the sport to those that don’t follow it, and when they’re being fed this kind of national media coverage, it’s hard to blame them for holding on to the stereotype.

All sports get it to a certain degree, but a few years ago, an NFL player shot his pregnant wife to death, and then stuffed her in the trunk of his car, yet I don’t seem to remember an indictment on the entire sport of football for it. Can you imagine if that was a UFC fighter that did it?

And no matter how many times it’s been proven that MMA is in fact less deadly than football, hockey, boxing, or even fishing for that matter, my guess is we’re going to have to put up with this kind of thing for a long time to come.

No freakin’ doubt! Damn, you tell an mma detractor this type of thing and back it up with stats and they just act like you are speaking Martian to them. They absolutely refuse to listen or even adjust their argument.

This statement needs to be qualified by the fact that in terms of [professional] sports, it is in it’s infancy. There’s little evidence at this point of the long-term effects of a career in mma on an athlete’s quality of living in their later years (i.e. the amount of brain damage and debilitating injuries for football players or boxers). And unlike many other sports it’s yet to be as widespread at the amateur and “minor league” levels.

For now in terms of “It’s been proven that MMA is in fact less deadly than other professional sports” , we’re going to have to but a big asterisk on it.

ANDREI arlovski

I did find it odd that he gave the wrong name for Arlovski while talking about him.

Anyone who goes to the trouble of wearing a dracula mouthguard is not normal. There’s this great new trailer out for a web series Arlovski is doing leading up to the Day of Reckoning. It’s on his website.

They have removed the bit about Arlovski. Now the piece ends with “I’m not sure what in Levens’ background may have led him to this, but with the MMA we’re not exactly dealing with your typical athlete.”

This comment on his story may have made him take the last bit down, it’s funny as hell.

Captain Caveman posts:

Another fighter at the Affliction event, Sergei “The Pit Bull” Arlovsky, is featured on his web site with vampire fangs.

That’s his mouthguard that he’s been wearing for years. Congratulations, Rick. That’s the equivalent of pointing out that Ichiro Suzuki has his first name on the back of his uniform on a post about Cory Lidle dying. ’
