Randy Couture to Make More Money, Terrible Movies in 2009

Randy_couture_mediumTo what the roles he adopts in these films affects his ability to fight is for now an open question, but one certainly hopes Couture isn't trading in what fighting years he has left for straight to DVD movies. Notable quote:

Ex-UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture has signed on for a major role in Sylvester Stallone's next action project, titled The Expendables.

Couture joins a strong cast including action stars Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker. The $60 million feature centers on a group of mercenaries (Couture, Li, Staham and Stallone) sent to overthrow against a ruthless dictator. Whitaker plays an FBI agent in the film.

According to Couture's agent Matt Walker, Couture's role is a major one originally conceived for Wesley Snipes and rewritten for the former UFC champ.

...

The project is the third major movie role Couture has signed onto for 2009, along with thriller Relentless and Lionsgate action film Warrior.

The upside? At least the exposure will be good for pay-per-view sales when Couture does actually get back to fighting. The downside, I'm afraid, is that beyond distracting Couture from training for fights we are now being treated to what I'm betting will be horrendous cinema.

I’d really rather see The Expendables than another Couture fight.

We have a Dolph Lundgren sighting!!!

Haha, I am more excited about that to be honest.

any chance that Lundgren and Stalone’s characters don’t get along, maybe throw a double-cross in there somewhere? Then BAM!!!! ROCKY VS DRAGO II. Its Gold Jerry…solid gold!

Everyone but Lundgren is listed as either in the group of mercenaries or as a federal agent. I think it is safe to say Lundgren is either the dictator or his main henchman.

Who cares?

If I were him I would much rather take the easy “bad movie” money than train & fight at his age. Keep pumpin em out & pumpin your bank account Randy!

Couture acting

maybe it’s time for Randy to consider acting full time.I’m not trying to disresect him and all his acomplishments.I just don’t want to see him get seriouly injured in a fight. But he still has acting as an option for income,so he should walk away from fighting while he still can.

by TheLevi on Dec 17, 2008 12:59 PM EST reply actions

He needs to retire. He is no longer relevant in this sport and he will not get that fight with Fedor.

Who is else does he fight a this point and why are we supposed to care?

Not to be harsh but you look at the guy’s record and he’s definitely one of the more overrated fighters out there with regard to pay/recognition.

the words overated and randy couture do not go together.

by bdw on Dec 17, 2008 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

Definitely a fighter that you can’t judge based on win-loss record. Every fight was a tough opponent, usually guys in their prime, and often under bizarre rules that hurt his chances (no striking on the ground for at least one of his matches, if I recall correctly…).

Because Randy’s pillowfisted ground and pound is so devastating.

Dudes 45.

He needs to concentrate on other career options even though he is an amazing athlete. Unless he’s the freaking Highlander (which is a possibility).

Wow

“Terrible movies” “horrendous cinema” “straight to DVD movies”

I guess I’m alone in the idea that this movie sounds completely awesome.

It’s been proven my tastes in movies is markedly different than the rest of the bunch here. I suspect I am more alone in my choices than you are.

by Luke Thomas on Dec 17, 2008 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

All I know is that the last time Stallone and Lundgren were in a movie together they ended the cold war.

by Day Man on Dec 17, 2008 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

Lundgren and Stallone were good in a movie that was part of a HUGE franchise. Would have been hard to screw that one up. Unfortunately both have careers that plat to the direct to video crowd these days.

This movie will also go direct to video I’m, sure.

by lbk on Dec 17, 2008 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, Stallone’s last two movies totally went straight to video. What are you talking about?

by FRANKIE on Dec 17, 2008 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

With the exception of Rambo and Rocky (pandering sequels) this is his last 8 years..

Taxi 3 (2003) (uncredited) …. Passenger to Airport
Avenging Angelo (2002) …. Frankie Delano
D-Tox (2002) …. Malloy
… aka D-Tox (Australia)
… aka D-Tox – Im Auge der Angst (Germany)
… aka Eye See You (USA: video title)
“Liberty’s Kids: Est. 1776” …. Paul Revere (1 episode, 2002)
    - Midnight Ride (2002) TV episode (voice) …. Paul Revere
Driven (2001) …. Joe Tanto
… aka À toute vitesse (Canada: French title)
Get Carter (2000) …. Jack Carter

Understandably not the best track record, but Rocky and Rambo both did well enough domestically (Rocky approx 70 million and Rambo approx 40 million) so I think this movie may actually see the light of day in theaters.

Personally, I hope so, cause as a child of the 80’s, who watched every bad 80’s action film known to man, this film is like a dream come true for me, haha. I know it’s crap, but it’ll have exploding heads, inexplicably hot third world chicks, and hopefully an RNC or two, haha.

by pud333 on Dec 17, 2008 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

Those movies all had built in audiences. Trust me, Holywood will not spend 20 million in advertising on crap like this. They will just send it right to video. Similar to randy’s last scorpion king crapfest.

by lbk on Dec 17, 2008 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

His Scorpion King role was so bad mainly because he could not even come close to Dwayne Johnson’s Scorpion King.

This movie – these movies – will suck out loud.

by Derek Suboticki on Dec 17, 2008 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

It would be more awesome if it had Jean Claude Van Damme in it.

Then you’d have Rocky paired with two universal soldiers. This is the kind of eccentric billionaire crap I’d do if I were rich. Seriously, someone should do a movie with Van Damme, Stallone AND Lundgren in it. I doubt it would be expensive. It’s not like these guys are swamped with movie offers.

Im picturing Randy looking something like this...

According to Couture’s agent Matt Walker, Couture’s role is a major one originally conceived for Wesley Snipes and rewritten for the former UFC champ.

Rec’d for hilarity. I wished they had just decided to let Couture roll with the lines they had written for Snipes. Now that would be comedy gold.

I’ve seen the movie about a half dozen times already. IF ANYONE HASN’T DONE SO, listen to the DVD commentary. I usually hate commentaries, but it’s Stiller, Black, and Downey, and it’s pure GOLD.

I think the movie sounds interesting. I like Jason Statham and Jet Li. Most movies Stallone is in are pretty good – with the exception of Rhinestone Cowboy.

Randy is smart – he is maximizing all his resources. He still has a lot of fight left in him – be nice BE readers.

Is Snipes in jail for tax evasion yet?

by toxic on Dec 17, 2008 1:58 PM EST reply actions

Last I heard he remains free on bail cause he’s appealing the conviction. I’m still hoping Rogan and Snipes will have that MMA fight they talked about years ago. If they threw that up on PPV, I might actually pay to see that, haha.

by pud333 on Dec 17, 2008 2:16 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah...

I think somebody told Snipes that Rogan had a black belt in Tae Kwon and a brown belt in BJJ and Snipes had a moment of clarity.

The movie doesn't sound good....

Easy money is hard to pass up. The movie sounds really bad but Forest Whitaker is one of my all time favorite actors and usually doesn’t do too many bad movies(check out Ghost Dog). Randy has a great agent working for him, that is for sure.

I imagine he will fight again before filming begins?

by lunedi18 on Dec 17, 2008 4:03 PM EST reply actions

Does anyone else remember when....

Statham looked like a legit good actor and had a chance to be a decent/above decent movie action star?

What happened? He needs to get new representation.

by The_Gaijin on Dec 17, 2008 4:11 PM EST reply actions

He’s going the Michael Caine route of accepting every role that comes along. Keep in mind that he went from “The Bank Job” (which was well received) to “Death Race” (which simply wasn’t received) to “Transporter 3” (which had the fatal flaw of all the Transporter movies: an unwatchable female character). A few years ago, Caine did “Batman Begins”, “Bewitched”, and “The Weather Man” in a similar time frame. I think Statham will be a relevant actor for a long time; maybe never on Caine’s level, but it’s one way of going about it.

"I'm AJB and I endorse this nut-puncher."

by AJB on Dec 17, 2008 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

Perhaps. But Caine has been in some impressive movies. I highly advise anyone to go see the original “Get Carter” if they have not done so.
