unless BJ Penn wins, Thiago should not have to fight a single person till he gets his shot. If BJ wins, I say Swick vs. Thiago for the Interim belt.
Who else is there that has a winning streak. Not saying I agree with Swick getting a interim title shot and it almost 99% more than likely wont happen, but Thiago’s next fight should be for a title regardless. Swick has 3 straight wins, and he did defeated Marcus Davis a top 10 UFC welterweight. He called out Thiago, it would be a fun fight to watch, but more than likely, I say Mike Swick vs Dustin Hazelett at UFC 96 in Columbus

That was my original argument as well. Dude has to pay some kind of dues here before he gets in with Alves.
Put Swick up against a guy like Mclovin
You do know Mike Swick is 8-1 in the UFC. He was going to be in line for a shot at Nathan Marquardt/Anderson Silva winner but he lost to Yushin Okami at UFC 69.
He has paid his UFC dues, but Welterweight Dues, nope. But like I said before, who else is there in the top 10 that you can match Thiago up against? Koscheck again? If he even is around? GSP if he loses to BJ, to make it GSP/Alves winner faces BJ?
Think about it. Swick is a top tier guy right now.

David Loiseau and Joe Riggs aren’t exactly nobodies.

They aint exactly in the UFC anymore either. And since the UFC obviously doesn’t recognize talent from other organizations, those wins are redundant as far as the UFC is concerned.
Just to be clear, I’m not arguing that Swick is in line for a title shot. I’m just pointing out that his list of victories isn’t just “nobodies.” I’m not sure what your point is exactly.

My point is that Swick is still untested at 170 while the guy he wants to fight is much tested. He needs to fight some more quality at 170, not a tomato can like Goulet.
Goulet’s hardly a tomato can. He had won two fights in the UFC in a row prior to getting wrecked by Swick.

True he isn’t a can. But his chances against Swick were just about none. It’s kinda sad really. Outside of his chin he could have won that fight. He’s really talented and skilled, it’s just that his chin is possibly the worst in the UFC. And against somebody that is accurate in his strikes but not powerful, you have a recipe for destruction.

Interim belt?! Why do we need one of those?
by Rundownloser on Dec 15, 2008 12:58 PM EST up reply actions
You may be on to something here. Create interim belts while the champ is busy as long as the interim champ gets the next shot to unite the belt. I see no problem with that. It’s not like there has been no precedence to this.
No, no, no - just NO!
C’mon man…that’s the same type of fragmenting that’s ruined boxing. lbk is bang on…we’ll just end up with more interim to interim solutions and then title shots are not “special events” when you’ve got 3 for every division. Completely devalues the aura of a champion for a short term “spike” that is going to lose its lustre if they keep doing this idea.
Why does it have always be for a title? Have a #1 contender and a champion and that’s that. The only other solution I like is, if you don’t defend your belt in 12 months because you’re off sojourning in other divisions – you forfeit it.
Whether or not you call it an interim belt or first contendership or whatever, you’re suggesting that Alves requires another win before he can get a shot at the belt, which he doesn’t. If he wants to fight to stay fresh, he should be able to, but he’s done all he needs to deserve his shot at the real belt.

come up here and get it
Kenflo wants it go up a weight class and get it from Penn then fine, otherwise Kenflo fights other challengers and rankings decide Penn’s challenger when he drops down in weight. My logic here is BJ Penn is able to go up a weight class to fight for another belt then his challenger should be able to do so as well. If Penn beats GSP (seriously doubting this possibility more every day) Kenflo comes up in weight and fights for both or Penn drops and fights for lightweight belt. Actually I am really confused now. Why can’t that pesky BJ Penn stay where he is at?!
"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"
I wouldnt mind seein Swick vs Anthony Johnson…or even Burns for that matter.
I dont think in any way shape or form beating Goulet warrants a shot at the #1 contender….
He beats the “Love-tap Warrior” and thinks he deserves to step up to the #1 contender? puh-leaaze.
And for the people saying Davis is a top-10 WW….REALLY?!?
At the time, Marcus Davis was fighting to be up there in the top 7 of the welterweight class before he lost to Swick.
LOL...
If you say so.
Petz, Carter, Spratt, Tan, Taylor, Liaudin —> Top 7? Are any of those guys even top 20-25? No.
GSP, Alves, Kos, Fitch, Serra, Hughes, Karo, Diego… there’s 8 guys right there.
So no – Davis was not fighting to be in the top 7 by even a country mile. Sorry.
I always thought Davis was a good gatekeeper type. Top 10 material though? No way. Plus he’s too old.
I like that fight an awful lot, good call

It’s a thin line between bravery and stupidity, Mike.

Cant blame a dude
for trying. Calling out someone always puts you on their radar and keeps you there. As long as Swick keeps winning, he’ll always be the guy who called out Alves. If he’s in line with another guy to fight Alves (pending he’s still the #1 contender)…the fight will go to Swick because the media train will go back and say “well, Swick has talk trashed about Alves in the past….”
I do hope Lytle beats Davis… And if he does… Lytle-Swick anyone?
I for one would also very much enjoy Swick vs Relentless Taylor.
