Dave Meltzer, Steve Cantwell's Armbar and Destroying My Call Screener on MMA Nation
For those that missed this past weekend's MMA Nation, I encourage you to at least catch up on the better parts of the show:
Dave Meltzer comes on board to do some number crunching on UFC PPVs and does some forecasting about what we can expect in 2009.
I take calls about Steve Cantwell's armbar and try to explain my position on why I'm not overly upset about his actions.
And we destroy our call screener Jim for being the laziest, most negligent person in the history of the universe.

I’ll suppose I’ll listen. I’m going to go get some Arby’s first, but I’m going to listen.

Luke, great show this week. Hope Jim gets better or gets fired. The interview with Meltzer was excellent.
Thanks for listening, but chances are Jim’s days at WJFK are numbered.

I'll take Jim's job
I live in the DC area and I need a weekend job
Being on the internet gives me a right...nay a responsibility to bitch about things
I could not find an application on WJFK.com, so I sent CK an E-mail.

I will just be Luke’s lacky. I can take calls and do what ever. I am unskilled in the area, but I have enough pasion for MMA that I want to see this show work. I am a salty, anti-social, prick, so I think Luke and I would get along, but I don’t have his vocabulary.
Yeah, but unlike that other show you were on, you don’t have to talk on this one. I mean, you do, but you just have to ask people their name, where their calling from, and I guess what they want to talk to the host about.
Now if this was one of those shows where the host banters back and forth with the call screener or producer, tag me in.
Always good stuff.

Gotta disagree with you on Cantwell Luke
1. You are correct that you can’t blame Cantwell for Breaking the arm
2. You absolutely CAN blame him for taunting his opponent and making the douchey jestures and yelling to the camera that “I broke that shit”
3. He just further reiterated what a meathead he was with the Rogan interview afterword.
" Tell me something Steve, How does a guy from Puerto Rico loose a ball in the Sun? "
I disagree with Cantwell
rejoicing in the fact that he broke Hasan’s arm. True-Hasan should have tapped & his arm was broke as a direct result of that. True-Cantwell is 22 & immature, but this is no excuse & we have seen plenty of young talented fighters that are able to win with class. He simply could have stated he has been working hard on his ground & is glad that it paid off.
We all know
that BJ is not very classy & we see that in each of his fights. He is a very talented fighter & I love to watch him fight, but he has never been one who has been called a class act.
The problem wasnt in the action
My problem wasn’t his actions in the ring. Or his attitude celebrating etc. Or even the comments on the mic. It was in a later interview when he remarked that he was a bit upset that he didn’t end his opponent’s career with a severe break b/c the injury was a less severe elbow dislocation.
Ha.

Well...
I fell for one of their stories in the past about a football player attacking his doctor (something like that). I eventually figured it out, but they make them look like real stories, with just enough absurdity to be semi-believable. If someone doesn’t know in advance that they’re jokes I can see how people can be fooled.
My knowledge on radio is limited. Luke, I was wondering if you could clear something up. Your friends and fellow MMA fans cannot get 1067 in Northern Maryland. I can get quite a few DC stations pretty clearly in my car, but WJFK is nothing but static. Is the station’s technology behind the curve or what is the deal?
Good question. My understanding is that WJFK is currently on a back-up transmitter while the normal transmitter is being repaired. Not sure how long it’s going to be before matters are fixed. You can always podcast or stream the show live.
Cool. However, minus your show I find myself surviving just fine without WJFK. Not that your colleagues don’t have insightful and intelligent conversations, such as what’s gayer: having sex with dudes or doing sodokus?

That sounds like a joke.
Also, and this is only kind of related to the topic of receiving DC stations in Baltimore, ever since 1370AM started broadcasting in Baltimore, I have been unable to pick up 980AM in my car. I used to listen to it on the way home, but now it alternates between static and public domain music. I feel like there is some kind of signal tampering or…something going on.
As for streaming live, while that is a solution, listening to the show on my computer from 5-7pm is impractical the majority of the time. And while I can (and just did) listen to the podcast, I’d like to be able to participate in the show if the mood struck me, like while listening to the segment regarding the alleged poor sportsmanship of young Steve Cantwell.
clearly you have your problems with this jim fella
and thats understandable. but is it that difficult to take your own calls? we did it all the time in college when you were just a one man show. though i must admit having producers and call screeners makes life a lot easier.
I could take calls, but I’d have to do it during commercials. I’m not doing that. Jim needs to show up on time.
Just do it anyway...
best case scenario he stops showing up and they fire him.

agreed,
if this person is such an issue there must be someone luke could complain to. unless he’s the station manager’s son or something, then you might want to tread lightly.
