Jeff Monson and Bobby Lashley Victorious: American Top Team Does It Again

A Big Week For American Top Team: Monson, Lashley, Miller, Gouveia, Saunders and Fioravanti All Victorious:

"Snowman" Jeff Monson (25-8) defeated "Suave" Ricco Rodriguez (30-9) via unanimous decision Saturday night during the main event at the Mixed Fighting Alliance debut in Miami.

"I am happy with the win but I was a little sloppy tonight." Monson told Fighters.com following the fight.

...

Monson’s teammate and former WWE star Bobby Lashley (1-0) won his MMA debut at MFA in Miami as well when he defeated Joshua Franklin (0-1) in devastating fashion with a TKO stoppage due to strikes in the first round. Lashley quickly raced forward scooping Franklin up and slamming him down into the canvas followed by a barrage of ground-and-pound cuing the referee to step in and stop the action.

Awesome.

Lashley is just as much a freak as Lesnar. He also has a pretty good background.

Im interested in him.

comparatively though.

Ricco is officially an MMA whore. Nine fights in less than 12 months. He should enter the ring holding a sign that says “will fight for food”.

by nitro on Dec 14, 2008 3:26 AM EST reply actions

Ricco

needs to make a living.Since when is a fighter being active a negative.Nine fights in twelve months on the smaller circuit he’s fighting on isn’t a huge toll on his body, because he hasn’t exactly faced great competition in all those fights. If Ricco started seeing a top strength and conditioning coach and got his body back in shape he could make some noise in MMA again. The guy still has a very skilled submission game for a big man.

by tylerdurden1 on Dec 14, 2008 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

I think ‘MMA whore’ means you’re fighting for money as opposed to some goal of being the best fighter you can be or something. By that definition, Ricco is definitely an MMA whore.

by Derek Suboticki on Dec 14, 2008 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

That’s absolutely ridiculous. If you’re going to label a fighter for wanting to get paid an mma whore then Randy Couture is the biggest mma whore in the world.

by tylerdurden1 on Dec 14, 2008 9:14 PM EST up reply actions

Wow! If you’re gonna throw Randy under the bus like that, I would love to hear your rationale. Create a fanpost or something, I would really like to hear your reasoning.

by nitro on Dec 15, 2008 12:03 AM EST up reply actions

Alright maybe I went a little to far with the shot at Randy Couture, but I just don’t get labeling a fighter who wants to get paid an “MMA Whore”.

by tylerdurden1 on Dec 15, 2008 2:00 AM EST up reply actions

Whore = someone that does something for money. Fighter = someone that does MMA out of passion, the desire to be the best fighter they can be/in the world.

How hard is this concept?

by Derek Suboticki on Dec 15, 2008 2:29 AM EST up reply actions

What are you talking about? Are you completely gone or what?

by tylerdurden1 on Dec 15, 2008 2:44 AM EST up reply actions

That's ridiculous

Professional fighters all fight for money. Every single one of them. It’s how they support themselves and their families. I don’t understand why some fight fans have problems grasping this.

by FRANKIE on Dec 15, 2008 11:59 AM EST up reply actions

If you look at Riccos level of competition over the last 2-3 years he hasn’t beat anyone of merit. Any decent fighter that he has faced has resulted in a loss. It seems as if he is using his one time UFC status as a to promote smaller shows and beat up cans. He hasn’t fought for the same promotion consecutively in over 3 years, When i called him an MMA Whore, it’s because he is strictly about the money.

by nitro on Dec 15, 2008 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

My problem isn’t with you calling Ricco an MMA whore. I just think subo’s assertion that real fighters fight for honor and love of the sport and not for the money is outrageous.

by FRANKIE on Dec 15, 2008 12:32 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, the money is definitely a factor no matter what kind of “warrior spirit” you have.

I didnt see the card, but Lashley’s fight seems to be a lot like lesnars first fight. Take down then quick gnp. The only difference there could be is, could lashley handle it if he fights the top guys too? He isnt that young too. So they cant build him up really slow. So hopefully a slight increase in competition in every fight for him.

Bobby Lashley might be stronger than Brock Lesnar and maybe quicker. He is a very well built athelete. He is listed at 6’3" 245 from his wikipedia page, he won three national amateur wrestling championships between 1996 and 1998.

So another wrestler coming in and just dominating. I believe here in about a year or 2, you will see him in Strikeforce or UFC, and he will be a complete threat to a lot of people. But right now, still got to see more from him.

He's quite a bit older than Lesnar...

and I’ve also heard some talk of him reacting very poorly when he gets hit. So we’ll see…

is only a year older than Brock.

huh...

I thought the gap was bigger…

Brock- 31 7/12/77
Lashley- 32 7/16/76

Eliot Marshall: Bader won. Like I said in the episode, I'm not going to make any excuses. It's my job to be able to deal with when somebody's doing that. It's not his job to change up his tactics.

Though you must consider Brock’s higher level collegiate wrestling and a couple of years head start in mma training.

I think that's what I was thinking...

when talking about the “age thing” in the past I think the argument was “older at the start of training” rather than just “significantly older” that’s what I get for not fact checking my comments…

Lashley wrestled at a much smaller division than Lesnar though.

by iiowyn on Dec 14, 2008 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, but still he is a very dominant wrestler, and if you can not tell (which I am 100% sure you can) Wrestlers dictate where the fight goes, and right now is possibly the best style to start off with. It gives stand up fighters and Jitsu fighters a lot of problems. Not saying Lashley is going to be the best MMA fighter ever, but I think he might be faster and maybe a little stronger than Lesnar.

What was that sound...

It was the sound of the dream fight between Ricco and Fedor going down the toilet, lol.

For those who actually saw the fight, how did Monson do? I’m really pulling for him to return to the UFC so here’s to hoping that he was really impressive in victory.

by Rundownloser on Dec 14, 2008 12:59 PM EST reply actions

I believe Monson left the UFC on his own accord and wasn’t fired because of poor performance or anything like that. So I don’t think he’s out there trying to impress Dana White, but rather doing his own thing and waiting to decide if he wants to make another go at it in the Octagon.

I think it wouldn’t be that difficult for him to convince Dana and the Fertittas to re-sign him…he’s one of the best heavyweight grapplers on the planet, although he’s had big problems with strikers (i.e. his fights vs. Pedro Rizzo, Tim Sylvia, etc.). It all boils down to whether Monson wants to be back in the UFC.

wow.. that lashley fight was called quick.

by asmiley420 on Dec 14, 2008 1:39 PM EST reply actions

Congrats to Lashley..

Thanx for putting the fight up there Nick… I really wanted to see Lashley’s fight. He’s going to make some serious noise in MMA. Whether his chin is in question here or not, the man was a Ranger in the United States Army…. you gotta be pretty damn tough to pull that off.

Sign Bobby Lashley, Dana

Your HW division is not stacked enough to justify not signing a guy that would walk in to at least the top ten – possibly higher.
