Anderson Silva v. Chuck Liddell Still Possible?
Anderson Silva's manager, Ed Soares, was asked about the middleweight champion's change of heart concerning a fight at UFC 95 in February. From CagePotato.com:
"With our timing and our scheduling, it just makes more sense to come back [in April]," Soares said."As of right now, nothing has been 100 percent decided yet," Soares said. "It looks like we're looking to fight in April. We don't know what can happen, but as of right now, I think we're going to be fighting in April."
Anderson's comments after his fight at UFC 90 gave the impression that he wanted to get back in the cage as soon as possible. This was coupled with the fact that he (and Soares) had previously stated they wanted "big fights."
With Silva still planning to retire within the next year or two, he wants to get the biggest bang for his buck with his current moniker of "pound for pound" king - and rightfully so. The message to UFC brass was cut and dry: Silva wants big fights and he wants them often. Then Dana came out and said that Thales Leites was at the top of the contenders list. It sounds as though the thought of stepping into the octagon with Leities didn't cause Silva to start salivating.
But if not Leites in February, who could Silva face in April? Well, a guy by the name of Chuck Liddell has been going around saying that he's not looking to fight again until April. He also stated in an interview that no one had talked to him about a potential bout with Silva - but this doesn't mean he wouldn't be up for it. The only person that seems against the fight at this point is Dana White, but that might be based more on his desire to see his old friend Chuck get back in the win column rather than suffer another potential loss. In the end, the interests of good business will trump any personal feelings.
It looks as though Anderson Silva is gunning for a fight with the Iceman. Chuck needs a big time opponent, as does Silva, and neither are currently booked for a fight. No matter the outcome, it would be a win-win for the UFC and the fans alike. If Anderson Silva wins, and does so decisively, he finally crosses over and becomes the big draw he should be. If Chuck is able to pull out the upset, he's back on top after his recent string of losses. Either way, we get a superfight between two living legends - what more could you want? Announcing this fight just in time for the holidays would be the perfect gift for the MMA fan base from the Zuffa brass.

Feed him Randy? For shame, sir! I actually think that Randy is probably his most competitive matchup considering his stipulation that he doesn’t want the 205 strap. At the very least, the clinch fighting would be great fun to watch.

i think it would also be a competitive matchup. Thats why i want to see that fight, rather than chuck vs silva (which is a complete mismatch in my opinion).. Yes it would be more competitive, yes it will be more fun.. But i still think anderson beats randy at 205.

It’s super intriguing and has that aspect that really sells Randy matches—fear for his well-being with slight hope he can pull it off stylistically and shock everyone. I hope it is his next fight.

Styles make fights. I would think a wrestler would be Silva’s kryptonite. I could see Randy using his bigger frame LnP Silva for 5 rounds. Randy would be a bigger Dan Henderson.

He would KO Randy so fast it would make your head spin. He’s Chuck with more accurate punches.

right, because wrestling has proven to be a thorn in Andersons side in the UFC..
Oh wait, no it hasn’t.

MMA math
If Rashad could beat Chuck to the KO punch, what makes anyone think Anderson would be any easier? Rashad is still developing his striking game. Anderson is a striking master.
Chuck was good in his time, but he never evolved his game. Count me in as not interested.
BTW, great pic.

You may not be personally too interested here but would you challenge the fact that this would do good business for the UFC and more buys than any card Silva has ever been on?

I look at it like the mob. You had a great earner for years. Awesome earner. Always dependable. But he gets old. Starts collecting a bit less. All of a sudden there’s a new guy on the block that has been shining. Really kicking ass but is still unknown and not able to command the respect that the older more experienced gentlemen has gathered over the years.
So you have the younger guy take the older guy out. All of a sudden he’s the big swinging dick in the jungle even though he has been for some time now. It’s just now, everyone knows it.
They need to make this fight happen to truly put Anderson over with the masses.
He can get a dramatic KO over Chuck and will then be able to headline big cards with 800K – 1 million buys.
