UFN 16: Best of 2008?
Despite it's lack of big names, last nights UFN may have been the UFC's best show of 2008 and subsequently a hard act to follow as the year closes out.
I realize this thought process may not be the most popular, but I stand by it. I can't remember having so much variety and action on a UFC fight card. Nearly every fight was fast paced and intense with only one of the televised events ending in a decision, and even that fight was an exciting bout to watch.
The evening started off with a high intensity battle between Matt Wiman and Jim Miller. Although it was pretty clear who was going to win the fight early on, as Matt Wiman was on the wrong side of an ass whoopin', he refused to give up. Jim Miller threw everything but the kitchen sink at him and he still powered on. I tip my hat to Matt Wiman for being such a warrior.
Next TUF alumn Tim Credeur force fed young buck Nate Loughran a fist sandwich for 2 rounds. Loughran finally threw in the towel in between the 2nd and 3rd round, but who could blame him? Tim's standup has greatly improved since we last saw him and I am excited to see him in the octagon again.
The next fight was a little bit of mixed feelings for me. It was a bout between 2 UFC newcomers, reigning WEC Light Heavyweight Champ Steve Cantwell versus Razak Al-Hassa, a virtual nobody. Razak seemed to be holding his own in the standup game early on until the fight went to the mat. That's where things got ugly. Cantwell managed to put Razak in one hell of an armbar and well, there is a reason they call it "foolish" pride. Razak refused to tap and ended up with a nasty broken arm. Cantwell immediately stood up and paraded around the ring screaming, "I broke that shit!" During his interview with Joe Rogan he admitted that he "always wanted to do that". Not once did he check to see if his opponent was okay, which he obviously wasn't. Cantwell is a great fighter and a poor warrior.
Not that I am a fan of Razak, because as I pointed out, I never heard of him. However, any man worth his salt would have gone over and said something to his downed opponent, but instead he felt it was necessary to brag about it. Any respect that he would have earned from me for a solid victory was lost when I saw how much of a poor sportsman he was. I look forward to Cantwell fighting some real competition in the UFC's light heavyweight division and moreso I look forward to him getting his ass handed to him. The only blemish on the night for me.
The next fight was grudge match between TUF alumn Mike Swick against Lord of the Ring's, Gollum. (Wait, what? That wasn't Gollum from Lord of the Rings?) Okay, I keed, I keed. Swick was actually battling it out with Jonathan Goulet who just happens to resemble the creepy character from LOTR. Never the less, Goulet was KTFO after a mere 33 seconds of the first round. I actually think Gollum would have lasted longer.
As expected with quick knockouts, the UFC then broadcast a fight from earlier in the evening between yet another TUF alumn Ben Saunders and his opponent Brandon Wolff. Wolff spent 1 minute and 49 seconds eating vicious knees from Saunders. By the time the ref called the fight, Wolff's forehead had a knot the size of a Hostess cupcake on his forehead; and by the time Joe Rogan had finished interviewing Saunders on his victory, the knot on Wolff's head was eating the first row. Very sad.
The main event of the evening had yet another TUF alumn, Josh Koscheck, pitted against Japanese Judo expert Yoshiyuki Yoshida. Koscheck wasted little time in the ring and made short work of his opponent with a hard straight punch, knocking Yoshida out on his feet, followed by a hook punch that sealed the deal. No doubt Koscheck is a force to be reckoned with despite his loss to Alves just 46 47 days ago.
Another poster commented that it took a Japanese national to turn Koscheck into a fan favorite. I'm not sure I would go as far as to say he is now a "fan favorite" but I can say that I dislike him less now. Not by much though. I still think he's a douche.
Overall, an absolutely fantastic night of fights. The UFC outdid itself this time and it was all free for the fans and in the name of a good cause. I hope this weekend's TUF Finale is half this exciting and I pray that the upcoming pay per views, with the hype machine in full force behind them, will pleasantly surprise me as this show did.

eeeeh...
not so much. Miller/Wiman was a good fight but did peter out as they ran out of gas (understandable for Miller), the Creuder fight was filled with such awful technique that I really hated it, Cantwell/Al-Hassan was an alright fight at best, Swick’s fight was predictable and too quick to really qualify as “good” or “bad” nice KO in the main event.
Not a bad show by any means…but I’d have trouble putting it as one of the top 10 shows of the year to date.

IMHO the miller/wiman fight was boring due to poor conditioning.
"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"
By who?
Miller? who took the fight on 7 days notice after coming home from his honeymoon? That first round was great…and then yeah, he gassed but that is understandable and rather than fold like a lot of guys do when they gas he gutted it out for the win.

I gotta disagree
I hear a lot of “not so much” but no one offering up a show that has been quite this entertaining so far this year. not one fight was i bored. but this IS just my opinion and I stand by it.
thanks for posting!
Lets see...
80, 81, 82, UFN 13, 83, 84, 85 was probably slightly better…at this point I got tired of looking through results to refresh my memory…but I actually think the majority of shows this year were better than last night.
91 was better by a long shot also

Seriously?
You think a “majority” of the shows this year were better than last night??
First off, UFC 84 wasn’t even close. I remember being sorely disappointed by that show in particular. Its probably because I hate watching any fight with the big lumbering giant Tim Silvia in it. Nogueria, although a legend and a great fighter, not exciting. At all. And if I recall correctly, the Gleison Tibau Vs. Tyson Griffin was a snorefest. Don’t quote me on that though.
I could pick through the fights you listed, but its just obvious we have to agree to disagree. UFC 91 was close, but I wasn’t as impressed with it overall as I was with very specific fights. There were some great fights that night, don’t get me wrong, but I just wasn’t as hyped watching it as others apparently.
Nog vs. Sylvia wasn’t on 84, they fought at 81. 84 had Penn/Sherk, Machida/Ortiz, Soko/Nakamura, Yoshida/Machine, Kim/Tan, Reljic/Gouveia, Palhares/Salaverry, Silva/Jardine, and Silva/Mendes. It even had Carwin on there.

Nog is boring?!
oh sweet jesus…you and I are not ever going to see eye to eye on anything ever.
The guy has had arguably the highest percentage of amazing fights of anyone I can think of.

sorry
but just wasnt’ blown away. i think i can live with myself if we never see eye to eye on anything, lol.
Was that...
the first time you’ve seen him fight? As an honest question not an “I know more than you” thing. I’m just curious because I’m surprised by anyone thinking he is boring.

i can't take it as anything but...
but i never said he was “boring”. just not exciting. if you want to take that to the opposite extreme so be it. but i don’t think he’s boring.
Why?
What is wrong with asking you if you’ve never seen him fight outside of the UFC? I wasn’t going to call you a n00b or anything…I work for this site…I think new fans are great. I just was curious if your “he isn’t exciting” was based on fights from PRIDE where his fights were pretty stunningly exciting or if it is entirely based on his time in the UFC.

"I realize this thought process may not be the most popular, but I stand by it."
he did put out the dis-claimer.
"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"
I'm not trying to argue with him...
but when your title is “Best of 2008?” you are asking for people to respond.

who's arguing?
why is it when someone defends their position its not a discussion its “arguing”?
i knew this wasn’t going to be popular, as one poster already pointed out to everyone. if you disagree that’s fine, but your not going to change my mind because you “really” want to.
I was saying...
that it isn’t an argument…just a discussion.
Settle down a bit…

Not really
The night was full of one sided matches and most fights were sloppy technically speaking.
Wiman/Miller was a great fight but that was about it. Even that fight had problems but it was problems more so with the ref than the actual fight.
Cantwell/Razak was a terible fight for the most part. Razak showed he has no stand up technical ability in the way he fought. Chin up begging to be KOed. And when it hit the ground Razak showed he had Houston Alexander type ground game. Cantwell got him in a 1st day of BJJ armbar and snapped his arm. Worst of all was the classless post fight comments made by Cantwell. And apparently he continued to make those comments retarded comments in the post fight press conference well after the adrenaline rush wore off, which is the reason some people were giving him a pass on the comments.
Nate/Tim was also pretty bad, but it was sorta enjoyable in the ‘turn my brain off for a second’ type of way. Both fighters showed little technical ability and once again we saw another fighter with ‘Jorge Gurgel Syndrome’. Except Gurgel has had better showings than either fighter showed last night.
Saunders made an exciting fight, but then again his opponent wasn’t doing anything to fight back. Really Saunders made himself look good against mediocre competition. It was nice to see though.
Not the best, but not the worst
It was ok, but there have been much better shows such as UFC 91 and 84. I noticed that the crowd wasn’t really into the show. Nasty injuries kill my buzz. too.
I feel compelled to write an article on the difference between a good fight and an exciting fight.
For instance (and I suppose this is where that argument stemmed from, for me), I found the first Bonnar/Griffin fight to be a very poor exhibition of mixed martial arts, but exciting to watch. Lot of sloppy striking (and Bonnar is a Gold Gloves champ, no less), lot of gutting it out and a great deal of heart from two individuals that were reaching for second and third winds for lack of true conditioning (I’ll probably get bit on that one).
However, this is not to say that there is no such thing as a combination of those elements. Sometimes these two types converge into the perfect storm of skills and dynamics, but last night was not that night. At best, it was the seventh or eighth ranked card (for me) on the year for Zuffa. Did I enjoy it? Sure, it was entertaining. Was it a top ranked MMA show? Absolutely not.
Predictable outcomes (goulett getting knocked out.. no way!)
plus
Horrible technique (the striking was… ugly… al ka w/e, credeur et al)
plus
Someone quitting on the stool in front of troops (give me a break)
plus
No real “wars”
equals
average card. I could see it being someone entertaining if you were drunk out of your mind. For a free card on tv, I will take it. but it was nothing special.
In a way..
Quick finishes are disappointing, too. I wanted to see Yoshida’s world class judo vs Koscheck’s wrestling. And while Goulet was going to drop at some point, he’s always entertaining and it would have been fun to see them bang it out for at least a round. But that’s the way it goes sometimes..
