Alves gets the winner of GSP-Penn II

Cage Potato reports

...that Alves will get the winner of GSP-Penn II.

"He's next in line for a title shot. If GSP beats B.J. Penn, then (Alves) fights GSP. If B.J. Penn wins, then he fights B.J. And then he'd have to defend that title for a while before I let him move up and try to fight Anderson."

Okay, that's all fine and good but what about Florian? If Penn wins, then will he defend the LW title first followed by the welterweight title? If he defends the welterweight title first, then Florian will be sitting out for an extra 6 months. Florian would truly be the red-headed step child of MMA. What about the conundrum of Penn winning the welterweight belt, loses the lightweight belt to Florian, and then becomes the first champion to defend a belt after he lost his previous fight?

This is more convoluted than a bad time travel paradox.

If Penn wins somebody has to wait either way. My guess would be BJ would want to stay at welterweight if he won and some sort of interim title would be set up at 155. Just a guess on my part.

Would Penn want to give it up? That’s the problem. I love Penn, but he’s an ego-maniac. Asking him to let go of the lightweight belt when he could walk around with two would be difficult. Plus, his sponsors would prefer that he keep two.

Given Penn’s history, I would assume given the choice he would fight Alves as opposed to Florian. Keep in mind, Zuffa can strip Penn of the title. It’s not like these fighters can just do whatever they want. Ultimately the Zuffa brass calls the shots.

True. However, do you really think the UFC would take the unprecedented task of stripping a belt holder of a title just because he’s a two-belt holder? What’s the point of winning two belts just to lose the other one?

by cyph on Dec 10, 2008 1:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

They should have made it a non-title fight to begin with.

by mythbuster on Dec 10, 2008 2:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I’m sure Zuffa did it to make it a five round fight.

by Andy R on Dec 10, 2008 3:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

They probably wouldn’t. There would probably be a slew of interim title fights in both divisions. That’s the most likely solution imo.

I know Dana's wish

He wants GSP to win. Where GSP goes, so does Canada. However, the best plans could be laid to waste in MMA. Penn demanded the rematch with GSP. Dana relented. However, if Penn wins the belt, it would be calamity for the UFC. One, they lose a popular champion who’s a huge draw in Canada. Two, they lose an extra title defense a year. For the UFC’s sake, Penn needs to lose. However, I think Penn has a very real chance of beating GSP the second time around.

Yeah, St. Pierre winning makes everything easy. He fights Alves, Penn goes back down and fights Florian. No problem.

The purpose of this post was to add my thoughts into it and spur discussion. If I wanted to quote a website and call “First” then I’d be just a MMASuPreMaCy-clone.

The purpose of this post was to add my thoughts into it and spur discussion.

… of course you could have just added your “thoughts” in the existing FanPost on the same subject. It tends to be easier for everyone else if there aren’t multiple FanPosts all on the exact same thing — keeps the discussion together, etc. This is especially true when the previous one was just a couple hours earlier.

You’re right. This is the first and last time I do a fan post. It’s too difficult to keep track if a topic has been brought up before. I was under the assumption that this was more like a discussion board thread. Unfortunately, just like Sherdog, people get flamed for bringing up a topic that was already brought up. I will now refrain from posting any more fan posts.

by cyph on Dec 10, 2008 4:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Nobody’s telling you not to post things. Nobody’s even flaming you. And if it’s “too difficult” to see that what (at the time) was about the second Fan Post on the list is about the same topic as you want to post about, then you’ve got other issues.

Basically MMASuPreMaCy provided a link to indicate that he had done a fanpost on the same topic. YOU were the one that started flaming by asking if he “wanted a cookie” and then throwing in your sarcastic “MMASuPreMaCy clone” comment. If you’re going to dish it out, be prepared to have others call you on it.

This place is pretty much as far from Sherdog as you can get. People here actually care about meaningful discussion and sorting things out, instead of just random flaming and namecalling.

This was a good subject, and there was nothing at all wrong with your thoughts on it. It just would have been easier to keep all the discussion together if you’d posted it in the comments to the other post instead of starting a whole new discussion to run parallel. That’s all.

I don’t want to argue any more on this topic. Obviously, I made that post because I didn’t see his. Even if I had seen it, his topic title did not jump out that it’s the same topic. I don’t go browsing the fan post for this very topic. It moves up and down.

Like I said, it’s not worth it arguing about it. People post the same topic twice all the time. People could just let it go or do what you did and tell people they got issue that they can’t find the other fan post. Obviously, it isn’t that easy if this problem keeps reoccurring. The double post cry is the same as the “search function” cry.

by cyph on Dec 10, 2008 5:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I know you don’t want to argue anymore, which is fine. But this is not true:

It moves up and down.

The FanPosts are in chronological order, with the most recent one at top. The other one was the second one on the list when you posted, and the title included “Alves vs. GSP/Penn on Tap.” If that title didn’t tell you his post was about the possibility of Alves vs. GSP/Penn, just like yours, I’m not sure what would have told you.

Look, nobody flamed you or told you to go away or anything else for posting the same topic. Somebody merely pointed it out (which actually helps everyone find all of the discussion on similar topics) and you went flaming/defensive in response. Acting like you were unfairly attacked or something isn’t very becoming.

Welcome to BE, keep posting. Don’t get so bent out of shape by somebody else pointing out where more discussion on your topic is or pointing out that they already started a similar discussion.

"Leites vs Silva and Alves vs " was what I saw. I still didn’t know that was what the post was about until you mentioned it as I do NOT read every single fan post out there. However, thanks for the tip. I just realized that it’s in chronological order and that the recommended posts is what jumps up and down (or does it?).

However, you’re right. I did overreact since I assumed your tone was belligerent (the problem with written format). I apologize for that.

by cyph on Dec 10, 2008 5:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No one is saying that.

Plus, my post was just two posts below yours. It shouldn’t be too difficult to see that.

I think the current version of Alves would beat Penn or GSP.

GSP-Penn

Dana White doesn’t necessarily want GSP to win. First of all, Anderson Silva is starving for worthy opponents. Who doesn’t want to see GSP move up in weight and fight him? I’ll tell you who doesn’t: GSP. GSP has stated on several occasions that he does not want to fight Anderson Silva because if he beats Anderson, he’d be expected to defend his middleweight title against a lot of his training partners. Second, BJ Penn has also stated that he wants to win the title in ALL the divisions. What do you think he would want if he beats GSP? He’d want to fight Anderson Silva. What a fight that would be. You think Dana White doesn’t smell that one brewing? To hell with Florian. Penn-Silva would be one for the ages.

This is great news!

Dana has opened the door for BJ to face Anderson. After Bj beats GSP, BJ gets to shut up the haters by taking out Alves. He also makes his case to face Anderson. BJ wants to prove he’s the best ever, this is his shot.

He will be at WW, so Sherk, KenFlo and Diego can fight for the scraps.
